The Weston Super Mare hospital has announced this morning that it's closed it's A&E due to an increase in the number of Covid patients the hospital is currently treating.

This highlights why "tourist" hotspots have been trying to persuade people from away not to visit them.

Also highlights that there are still plenty of Covid cases around and it's still spreading.

This is why the lockdown needs to carry on, with very slight relaxations over a long time period. Those who think it's all over and we can get back to normal are deluded.

But so long as the rise is relatively small, it should be managable without the lockdown so many here are in love with

We have to have restrictions until we have the means to manage increases in infections, otherwise we are just back to March.

But the strategy now seems to just open up and hang the consequences, we may as well not bothered.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 14:46

They shouldn't be doing 'as they choose' they should be showing care a and compassion for their fellow human beings.

Including those working in hospitals.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 14:46

Is it not just common sense that crowding on a beach isn’t a good idea?

I'm not sure how much of this 'crowding' has been going on in reality. Plus, the virus doesn't seem to spread very well outdoors, so not sure that it is 'common sense'. However, if that's what you feel, by all means 'stay the f**k at home'.

Pertella · 25/05/2020 14:47

The entire hospital in my city was shutdown in november 2018 because of norovirus and yet we didnt lockdown the whole city.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 14:47

We have to have restrictions until we have the means to manage increases in infections, otherwise we are just back to March.

I agree with that and haven't seen a single person here argue to the contrary.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 14:48

Icedpurple

Yes. It has been 'going on' . Yes we have seen it with our own eyes. And not in 'the media'. Yes, it is affecting us.

Don't come to Weston .You are harming us, our kids and ultimately our facilites and schools.

PinkyAndTheBrian · 25/05/2020 14:48

You’re reading stuff that isn’t there Iced.

PinkyAndTheBrian · 25/05/2020 14:50

Iced, I’ve been saying that and you’ve done a very good impression of arguing with me over it.

CatandtheFiddle · 25/05/2020 14:50

Life has to go on at some point.

Well, it won't go on for residents of the area around Weston who have heart attacks or strokes, or other life-threatening accidents or illnesses, if they can't get to their nearest A&E because of the entirely predictable spike in COVID-19 cases.

In an area which is poor enough, and has few NHS services.

jerometheturnipking · 25/05/2020 14:51

For leisure or exercise you should stay within a few miles of your home (like Scotland and Wales)

Unless you need to drive further than that to sit in your parents' garden, as Sturgeon confirmed herself.

jasjas1973 · 25/05/2020 14:52

@IcedPurple

You appear to be arguing to lift restrictions? imho we are many weeks away from that due to utter incompetence over TnT and the early lifting of restrictions, which though slight, were illogical and have allowed the public to interpret them as they please.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 14:53

Don't come to Weston

Believe me, I've no intention. It doesn't interest me in the slightest.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 14:54

You appear to be arguing to lift restrictions?

I am arguing for a phased lifting of restrictions, yes.

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 14:55

@jerometheturnipking I wouldn't class visiting a parent as leisure or exercise though

Bol87 · 25/05/2020 14:55

I don’t think it’s over. It’s not going to be over. The virus is here to stay. But as we ease restrictions, there are likely to be local outbreaks.

And that’s OK so long as we can track & trace and contain it! Where the hell is the track & trace app?! Why is taking SO long?! Why have we not just nabbed an app from another country long doing track & trace?! Why are we making our own that is seemingly having so many issues?!

PigletJohn · 25/05/2020 14:55

Rembering that older people, especially in care homes, were not receiving proper treatment, it's possible that a popular retirement town like Weston might now have a busier hospital if they are now taking in cases that would previously have been neglected.

PafLeChien · 25/05/2020 14:56

realistically, WHAT is still restricted?

Beach, parks outdoor places are all opened.
Business are reopening
Restaurants and bars are reopening - even if most never closed and offered take-away and deliveries instead.
Hairdressers have started to take appointments

Apart from schools and hotels, what's left?

PafLeChien · 25/05/2020 14:57

Where the hell is the track & trace app
we just chose not to use the ones that are proven to work quite well abroad...

Bol87 · 25/05/2020 14:57

Restaurants & bars are not opening, they aren’t allowed? Only for takeaway..

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 14:59

@PafLeChien As we come out of lockdown restrictions are on distancing and no mass gatherings

PafLeChien · 25/05/2020 14:59

Restaurants & bars are not opening, they aren’t allowed?
they are around here, there are tables on the pavement!

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 15:00

realistically, WHAT is still restricted?

Off the top of my head:

  • All restaurants, pubs, cafes etc shut, except for takeaway
  • Many workplaces closed
  • Public transport severely restricted
  • Hairdressers and salons shut
  • Schools, universities etc shut
  • Gyms, swimming pools etc shut
  • All sporting events cancelled
  • All theatres, cinemas, clubs etc shut
  • Public gatherings not allowed
  • Most dentists shut
  • Most 'non-essential' shops shut

Probably a whole lot more to add to the list, but I'd say that's enough to be getting on with, wouldn't you?

conveniencestore · 25/05/2020 15:01

Why doesn't the UK use a track and trace app that already exists, is being used by other countries and is known to work? Instead it is developing one from scratch that doesn't seem to work in all areas on all phones. It won't be available before schools reopen as promised. Lockdown has been eased without it being available.
I just learned on here this morning that the new UK app is being developed by a company whose director is Dominic Cummings sister!

MarginalGain · 25/05/2020 15:02

Well, it won't go on for residents of the area around Weston who have heart attacks or strokes, or other life-threatening accidents or illnesses, if they can't get to their nearest A&E because of the entirely predictable spike in COVID-19 cases.

If it happens now, it's happened before and will happen again, covid19 or no.

It is perfectly normal for the NHS to be overloaded.

jasjas1973 · 25/05/2020 15:02

I am arguing for a phased lifting of restrictions, yes

Well, we all want that! but we cannot until we have an effective means of tracking AND we have a far lower daily infection rate, which even officially is 3k per day, estimated to be in RL over 60k per week, even with germany's recent increases, its still just 1k per day (official figures) on a bigger population.

If we don't get a handle on this, we will enter the Autumn (just 4 months away) with a very high community infection spread.
