Why can't secondary schools do lessons via zoom?

I know not every child will have access to a computer or be able to log online but I'm surprised our school has not attempted it or even pre recorded lessons like the online oakwork academy. I know most private schools are setting up lessons via zoom. I really hope the government and schools take this into consideration for our children especially those coming up for GCSE's next year. It's just seems our children will be disadvantaged.

So, teachers should not be given the required equipment to do their job from home? And yet, weren't MPs given £10,000 each to do exactly that?

I don't believe our state school DC deserve a lower standard of education than their more affluent counterparts

You're right, they don't. Which is why I - and thousands of other teachers - are adapting our lessons to help as many children as we can. Rather than just using zoom for the students who can access it and shrugging our shoulders of the responsibility of the rest. Which is what is being suggested by harping on about goddamn live lessons as the gold standard and ignoring the many many posts that explain exactly how teachers are continuing to support and educate their students.

@HakeFish so you're offering teachers furlough if they refuse to follow your suggestions?

Excellent, where do I sign up? 80% to relax at home and spend more time with my own children and partner. After all I'm payed so well so 80% is plenty.

I appreciate some people are genuinely struggling on the furlough scheme but I know a lot of teachers who would take that to avoid the hassle they're getting at the moment. Still you can always pull in all those tutors and oversees teachers you seem to be aware of when were all sat at home.

@MoreW1ne

On another thread she is offering redundancy without knowing the ramifications or legal requirements.

MoreW1ne · 28/05/2020 18:48

Redundancy! Grin
We've been struggling to get specialists in key subjects for years, I'm sure nobody sensible about improving education would be suggesting we get rid of the teachers we do have.

That said, if there's this untapped pool of overseas teachers desperate to teach in UK schools clearly we're missing a trick!

She wants the retried, graduates, ex industry professionals and overseas teachers to start teaching.

But she is pretty blind to DBS, training etc.

My year 7's private school is using teams. She is currently timetabled from 8.30 - 4.30 daily with about 4 hours actual live lesson. Most kids have their camera off unless they are speaking. Homework on top. Teachers very responsive to messages. Assemblies on line and well-being classes on top. Before the school got properly organised (pre Easter) she was set lots of worksheets but the actual teaching was a bit shit. She's learning much more with the live lesson than she was with just worksheets (which are set on top often to be completed after the class). Bad behaviour is not tolerated any more than in would be in a face to face class. I think it is very sad that this is not offered in all schools. Some children not having access to tech is a different issue and should (and could) also be addressed but is not a good enough reason not to provide at all in my opinion. I also don't see that the teacher needs to be on video, audio would be sufficient and all lessons could be put on line so those that can't access the lesson at the time it is scheduled can watch at a later time (although clearly not able to participate). There will always be some children who can't take part (I'm sure there are some at my daughters school) but if just setting worksheets is an adequate education then we presumably don't ever need our children to go back to school.......

HakeFish is very new to MN and remarkably ill-informed about quite basic aspects of teaching.

How I larfed at the proposal to parachute in all those gagging to teach and damn the pesky unions. It's the Mum's/ex-miiltary solution all over again. :o
