Why can't secondary schools do lessons via zoom?

Dickorydockwhatthe · 24/05/2020 17:39

I know not every child will have access to a computer or be able to log online but I'm surprised our school has not attempted it or even pre recorded lessons like the online oakwork academy. I know most private schools are setting up lessons via zoom. I really hope the government and schools take this into consideration for our children especially those coming up for GCSE's next year. It's just seems our children will be disadvantaged.

Because it’s shit

And the risk for children and young people is so minimal

Oakmaiden · 24/05/2020 17:41

So what would happen then to the children who can't access it? At least this way everyone is disadvantaged, rather than the disadvantage being purely in the laps of those children who are already disadvantaged in so many ways.

PotteringAlong · 24/05/2020 17:41

You’ve just answered your own question

CoronaIsComing · 24/05/2020 17:42

Why don’t you do a search for one of the other 28474958283848 threads on here asking the same thing and you’ll find plenty of reasons!

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 24/05/2020 17:43

Oakmaiden, yes, better to fail all kids than some kids ConfusedHmm

Our local comp does normal lesson plan including lots of zoom/video lessons

Very rare for kids not to have any access to a phone, tablet or PC

Those that don’t have access to a screen can come into the school

It CAN be done

Inoneminute · 24/05/2020 17:45

Some are but there are many many reasons it's not as easy as it sounds.

There are numerous safeguarding risks around possible inappropriate behaviour by both teachers and students or other people in the households.

We have found actually very few of our students have good access to a "proper" device to work on and where they do it is shared with siblings and parents wfh. Most have smart phones but almost all with very limited data and only 40% have broadband at home - we checked. They usually depend on free wifi in school and at McDonalds etc.

If teachers are delivering zoom to the privileged they are less able to support those who need them most.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 24/05/2020 17:45

But all children will be at some disadvantage depending on whether they have support at home. Some parents may be working at home etc so unable to give the time they want some children do not have computers or may have to share. It's very demotivating for children to do endless tests, works sheets with no interaction from teachers. I have been using Oakwood which has pre recorded lessons with a quiz it is far more motivating then the work their school has sent however doesn't link in with the topics their school has currently set.

No zoom lessons for my high school child, teachers are setting work which they work through with guidance from teachers, teachers are on email for any questions, it’s working well.

SmileEachDay · 24/05/2020 17:47

50% at my school.

eeyore228 · 24/05/2020 17:48

Jesus not another school bash thread. Easy to whine and moan from your sofa, with literally no idea of how to achieve this on the scale required. Everyone is in the same boat, yet some individuals believe they have been hard done. It's a global crisis! I just don't get it.

StoorieHoose · 24/05/2020 17:48

Cos down computer whizz student will have the teachers head superimposed on some porn and shared via Snapchat by the time the lesson has finished?

Sleepthief · 24/05/2020 17:49

Our school has been offering an increasing number of lessons for y10 via Microsoft Teams. To be honest, it's a bit of a nightmare - the kids are so hyped from having had no contact with teachers and many peers for two months that it's impossible for the teachers to keep control of the lesson. It brings a new meaning to low-level disruption! I'm not convinced of the value even for those who have access to computers and WiFi...

Dickorydockwhatthe · 24/05/2020 17:49

Coronal jog on if you have nothing constructive to say. I'm sure that would apply to most threads on mumsnet. I'm asking because it was brought up in conversation with a friend. It's a shame they can't link the topics with other online learning. My son has been doing learning with oakwood because it's more appealing the boring worksheet and cheesey YouTube link the school have sent but he's worried he's not learning the topic the school have sent.

Zoom was working really well for Boris’ briefing just now, not! Grin Struggling to unmute journalists, feeds cutting off etc.

In fairness to schools, the original guidance for remote learning (which was changed on 21st May) was specifically mentioning PDFs as the suggested method.

Interestingly OP, my school surveyed parents nearly two weeks ago asking what they wanted and the overwhelming majority (we have a school of 1600+) did not want live lessons via Zoom (or Teams) because they didn’t want to be tied to a set schedule because their home lives were not conducive to that. In fact many children were doing most of their work at the weekend or later in the evening when their parents no longer needed their device and there was more bandwidth available.

So we are continuing with electronic lessons that are set daily, may even have help videos too, alongside PowerPoints, Task sheets and links and work uploaded when convenient for the student, for us to give feedback from.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 24/05/2020 17:51

Yet another zoom teaching thread Hmm

GrammarTeacher · 24/05/2020 17:52

All my year 12 lessons and most of my year 10 lessons are done live via Teams. The other year 10 lessons are PowerPoint but with recorded narration. I can't do all my lessons like that as I am also looking after two preschoolers.

Soontobe60 · 24/05/2020 17:52

You haven't seen the porn that some students have uploaded during zoom lessons then I guess?
Any school who is using zoom is forcing its teachers to go totally against Union, and DfE guidance. But hey ho, as long as mummy is happy that her little darlings are being occupied?

ChloeDecker · 24/05/2020 17:53

It's a shame they can't link the topics with other online learning.
I guess it is because teachers don’t know what Oak National Academy will so until the Monday each week as ONA don’t release their schemes of work in advance. Therefore, teachers can’t plan to mimic that. (My subject isn’t covered by ONA anyway)

Dead2me · 24/05/2020 17:53

Dc school were doing video meetings initially but it was stopped due to to safe guarding issues. (Scotland)

countdowntonap · 24/05/2020 17:53

Because Mr Bruff’s online lessons are better than mine will ever be. Why reinvent the wheel?

IHeartKingThistle · 24/05/2020 17:54

Not allowed.

We are doing pre recorded PowerPoint lessons with our voices recorded (not video, not allowed) over the top and fuck me they take HOURS to create.

We're trying. We're doing our best.

Keepdistance · 24/05/2020 17:55

I dont think there is a family in dc school as its primary and online maths has been set for at least 2y now.
How do people get school emails.
A kindle costs £50 and a fire stick less.
I rhink recorded is better anyway more flexibility with siblings

Dickorydockwhatthe · 24/05/2020 17:55

Omg it's not a school bashing thread get over yourself can we not ask the questions without people getting defensive?? How can private schools do it if there are safeguarding concerns?? I have a year 10 child and he has lost all motivation to do the work plus has SEN so could do with more support especially in more specialist subjects. Could pre recoding lessons work?? Obviously not a full hour.

My DH’s private school isn’t doing live teaching lessons.
