Will those having to quarantine for 14 days be paid sick pay?

I know many companies have been able to pay sick or use sickness policy during lockdown for isolating staff.

But what happens if it's forced quarantine after flying into the country?

For example. I have got a holiday booked the end of August. I have - ever since this was declared a global pandemic - expected not to go.
I have continued to pay instalments as I can't cancel without losing money. Balance is due 2 weeks before I fly.
Short and long of it is payment so far covers flights and I'm aware it'll take up to 8 months for that to come back and I've accepted it. I knew balance wouldn't be taken as they make decisions weeks in advance.

However now it's very unclear what will happen 3 months from now. It's unclear how long quarantines will last for country entry across Europe and who will release quarantine when.

So my question is does anyone know what happens if your holiday goes ahead but you must still quarantine on return to the UK?

Will you then be issued a not fit to work certificate because this is enforced rather than illness?

I'm also wondering if it's not just easier for countries to agree that holidays won't happen and refunds can be given if they still think returning requires quarantine if the receiving country isn't enforcing it and you go.

I also wondered if anyone has any information beyond what tabloids have printed (!) with regards information such as some airlines flying the routes with empty planes because it then means they don't have to issue refunds. Apparently fuel is 45% of costs and so they still make a profit and even more so as they don't need a full cabin staff and baggage staff etc.

I know I am extremely fortunate to have been able to have booked a summer holiday abroad. And I have all along said I'd rebook with same airline and travel company if they are fair with refunds. I actually planned to book a more expensive trip as would have a further year to pay the extra.

The government need to stop fucking about on holidays. They need to come out and say that nobody will be going on holiday for the foreseeable future and then holiday companies would have to do something. They are basically just buying time for the holiday companies by doing so.

Mtbf · 23/05/2020 20:51

not doing so

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2020 21:06

No I said I was unclear of current situation because of all the different stuff printed in the media - including flight companies are running empty flights to countries we can't travel to to avoid refunds because "the flight went and you didn't get on it"

I am clear of what I was told re carry on paying and we will refund if cancelled.

I am clear that from June 8th for an indefinite time period all arrivals to the uk will have to quarantine.

What I asked was if it's a choice between losing your money or going what is the situation re quarantine in uk. Can we phone in sick because it's enforced.

People clearly said I couldn't phone in sick and could lose my job.

So I said in that case I think something should be set up for all those to rebook. Not a refund but re book. Because the rules have changed since we were given the original information.

But the rules have only changed between june the 8th and 29th, what happens after that us anyones guess.

I really don’t think people are saying you shouldn’t be upset. We’re all upset. Many people will be in the same boat.

I do think you need to lose the mindset of it being “forced” though. If you go on this holiday it will be by choice and it will not be the same as if you are genuinely forced to self-isolate because of a factor outside your control.

Hopefully you’ll be able to rebook with minimum admin charge or similar- that’s certainly what I’m hoping for.

But if that isn’t possible you’ll have to either forfeit the holiday and see if a claim on travel insurance is doable, or ask your employer if you can have a few days off.

If the government want the economy to pick up after this they need to make sure clients have the confidence that spending money on advance services is worth the risk.

Anyway my question was answered that it's unlikely we will get sick pay for enforced quarantine related to going abroad.

The question still remains if that also is the case for track and trace enforced isolation.

I'm hoping common sense prevails and it's either safe or it isn't.

Dad thankyou. Some actual facts which was what I was asking for. I didn't know this was only for 3 weeks originally. That's what I was asking for. Facts rather than media speculation.

@Footywife
You're verging on hysterical!
Get a grip.
It's a holiday.
Your holiday is no more important than the family planning on going to Skegness. Fact. It matters not that you believe you deserve special dispensation.
If you have travel insurance, you may be entitled to claim. If not and assuming travel is again permitted, then you make a choice. End of. Opting not to go may result in a loss. Annoying yes. But that really is c'est la vie right now.
Personally, we had a big holiday abroad last year, was planning on a big one next year, so had only booked a cheaper holiday for this year. Lucky for us it's only a small loss. Irksome but not something which could have been predicted.
It's certainly not up to employers or the state to cover the costs of quarantine if someone chooses to holiday abroad if travel is again permitted. Its a choice. So holiday accepting the choice or don't go!

@SoloMummy Nobody is 'expecting' an employer or the state to pay for anything. The OP asked a question as she was wondering what would happen. These are unprecedented times and as a working parent this situation only adds to the constant work/life/children balancing act.

Mind you....I guess it isn't something you have to worry about....while you're quite happily sitting there letting the state pay for your children 😊

SoloMummy · 24/05/2020 11:12

@Footywife
How's the state paying for my child exactly?
I'm not furloughed. Continued to work throughout and educate my child.
I realise that was intended to be low blow bitch at me remark. But all you've done is make yourself look like an absolute bitch!
Enjoy your holiday.
