DS statement on Cummings is shameful

Basically I am sceptical about how terrible this could be to get for all of us - the mild illness stuff has been dropped as not helpful to the general lock us all up thing.

Regardless as a law abiding person I've stuck to the rules.

Which I thought meant you had to self isolate if you had symptoms and no, you couldn't go somewhere easier. If you had kids you all stayed in together, relied on deliveries or the local council support schemes and 111 if it was bad.

So I'm sickened by the knot tying in getting Cummings off the hook.

I honestly don't get the love for Rishi Sunak or the surprise that he has fallen in to line.So he handed out money from the elusive money tree. He's still a tory that was willing to compromise his department to be in his position and tories are gonna tory.

He's well turned out and speaks in a comprehensible way. Is it any wonder people fall for the belief that he's different to the rest!

derxa · 23/05/2020 14:28

I might have done the same. I haven't broken the rules until now but now have been diagnosed with BC and my DH is travelling up from England to look after me when I get my operation.
I don't like Cummings and he should resign but all of this is totally in keeping with his character. What we don't know is if he has underlying health conditions.
By the way I'm sick of the media rabbiting on about social distancing and reinforcing the 'rules'. Making everyone terrified and depressed.

madroid · 23/05/2020 14:28

twitter.com/MaryWakefield

It's interesting looking at the dates on the Twitter account of Dominic Cummings' wife Mary Wakefield. (she never tweets herself, just retweets)

On 11 April she retweets an ICU nurse's thread pleading with people to stay inside unless for essentials.

Is a 250 mile journey when contagious with covid-19 essential?

He should be sacked and if Boris won't do it we must NOT forget when voting at the next election.

cantdothisnow1 · 23/05/2020 14:28

When my DC were 5 and 2 I got the flu. I was so ill that I was hallucinating and literally could not move/ care for them.

No way could I have driven them anywhere.

My MIL drove the 80 miles to my house so I could stay in bed, which I did for a week.

It would have been within the guidelines for a family member to travel to them to care for a vulnerable person should they have become so ill that they couldn't care for the child.

It was not within any guidelines to drive 275 because they may get so ill they could not care for him, spreading the virus along the way.

This is gaslighting at its worst. Heads should roll, but sadly they won't.

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 14:30

In case it hasn't already been shared -

Petition here

merrymouse · 23/05/2020 14:30

Think about if everyone rotated round the country when sick on the off chance they'd need emergency childcare.

Exactly.

Nonnymum · 23/05/2020 14:32

Not everyone has a back up, grandparents close by etc?
But apparantly Dominic Cummings' has family in London.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 23/05/2020 14:33

Hw won't quit and he won't get booted. Our Government have become an exact replica of The Thick Of It and Cummings is just a more cunty version of Malcolm Tucker.

Fuck him, fuck his lies and fuck the whole Government currently scuttling about on Twitter defending his bullshit. It's reprehensible and proves that they're all terrified of him. He's a weaselly, dirty bureaucrat and they're all leaping to back him up - I've never witnessed anything quite like it and it convinces me that 10 DS is now run by that scarecrow made of shit.

Matt Hancock said he would back the police involvement against Prof Ferguson for breaking lockdown rules but feels Cummings is right? Utter tripe - he's been told to say that, just as Sunak, Raab, Gove and even the Kwik-Save-Jesus Rees-Mogg have been dragged away from their Saturday fry up to offer Cummings their backing. Tells you everything you need to know about who runs things at number 10.

Darcydashwood · 23/05/2020 14:34

It makes me sick and tells you everything you need to know about what these people think of the little people. Some people have not been able to say goodbye to loved ones, have struggled on throughout; have mental health now in the toilet. Yet they come out En made with a script to defend this man and proclaim his duplicitous actions as what any parent who cares for their child would do - except other parents were not allowed because of the guidelines he helped create. He has to go. It’s sickening.

Devlesko · 23/05/2020 14:34

He's a lying Tory scumbag, why are people so surprised, you voted them in.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 14:37

Cummings is not a Tory.
He is an anarchist nihilist
read his blog posts going back years and years
he cares about nobody other than himself and whoever is paying him

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 14:39

Hancock's tweet said toddler, isn't their son 5?

Recently turned 4? Newspaper article Jan 2019 describes the boy as being aged 2.

That Scottish woman had to resign after flouting lockdown didn’t she?

Nicola Sturgeon defended her at first but Scotland's Chief Medical Officer visited her second home twice, on two separate weekends - it wasn't a one off. Neil Ferguson also reportedly met his married lover at least twice.

I don't care if Dominic Cummings is sacked or not - not keen on him at all, but his 'offence' differs from the two above on several points - he didn't travel for pleasure and he only made one journey.

but NEVER would I - while ill - drive for four hours to the other end of the country

He obviously wasn't ill when he was photographed leaving Downing Street on the 27th March - he was at work - did they drive up that evening? He is probably regarded as essential to the government (apparently he works 16 hours a day) - if his wife is ill then he doesn't have time to be the child care provider.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 23/05/2020 14:40

It makes me furious. Both myself and DH had suspected covid (not tested as wfh for me and not a key worker for dh) we have a 6 and 3 year old. And fuck did we struggle with the DCs. My parents live 250 miles away but at no point did we ask them to come or go to them because that would endanger them, was against the rules and it wouldnt have killed the kids to watch too much youtube and eat crisps for a few days. We struggled through. I havent seen my parents now for 5 months....

EvilPea · 23/05/2020 14:41

Not everyone has a back up, grandparents close by etc?

Thousands of parents don’t. They’ve been told to isolate and stay put, just get through it.

As a poster said up above, when you’ve A 13 year old left to die on their own, you cannot defend this.

GrimmsFairytales · 23/05/2020 14:41

Recently turned 4? Newspaper article Jan 2019 describes the boy as being aged 2.

So very much a child and not a toddler.

sussexmum · 23/05/2020 14:42

I really hope he goes, what does the Tory press think? I've heard even the Telegraph has been turning against Boris a bit and you'd have thought Mail readers would be outraged. surely no one can defend him the optics of him running away from Downing Street in March were so awful!

Doyoumind · 23/05/2020 14:43

This is what genuine privilege and entitlement looks. Like many others, I'm a single mum. I haven't been ill but my plans have always been to cope as best I can if I get it and carry on looking after my DC. There is no justification. I disliked the man before but his arrogance is astounding. Others who have broken the rules have resigned but he's determined not to go.

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2020 14:43

Dev, I didn't vote for them!
(One of the few that didn't in my area. )
I don't hate all Tories , I know many that are friends and family , but this Cummings person just needs to resign. Boris needs to get a grip here. It's not hard.

MaxNormal · 23/05/2020 14:43

Oh clav, is there anything that lot could do that you wouldn't defend?

PerkingFaintly · 23/05/2020 14:43

What makes it worse for the MPs currently lashing themselves to Cummings mast is that they will go down with the ship, because they need the public's approval to get back in.

While Cummings will bob up like an unflushable turd, because he's unelected.

tenlittlecygnets · 23/05/2020 14:46

Hear, hear, @fudgebrownie - I have just been tweeting saying exactly that.

Their hypocrisy is outstanding.

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 14:46

So very much a child and not a toddler.

Making allowances, Matt Hancock might have thought the boy was 2 or 3 if they don't mix socially.

ListeningQuietly · 23/05/2020 14:47

Cummings child was born in July 2016
that makes him coming up 4

There is NO WAY they did the drive to Durham without stopping
and risking infecting other people
en route

Clavinova · 23/05/2020 14:47

Oh clav, is there anything that lot could do that you wouldn't defend?

I used to be a lawyer. Grin

FliesandPies · 23/05/2020 14:47

He is probably regarded as essential to the government (apparently he works 16 hours a day)

Doing what?

not keen on him at all, but his 'offence' differs from the two above on several points - he didn't travel for pleasure and he only made one journey

Irrelevant. And his offence is worse because he travelled to a completely different area while knowing his wife was infected with the virus.
