Just heard headline on Radio 4 .

Daily Mail seem to be only News agency reporting .

OP posts:

As far as they are concerned, track and trace is ready.

Littleposh · 20/05/2020 20:14

Excited?? Why the fuck would I would I, or anyone with even a fraction of a brain, be 'excited' for their children to miss a whole year of school??

Despite the fact, who on earth is sick enough to be 'excited' about something that is causing great pain and suffering to millions of people, for a multitude of reasons. Beyond me

LIZS · 20/05/2020 20:14

Was it ever anything more than a "no sooner than" date provided certain conditions were met though? It may be that it can be phased on a regional/LA basis if the relevant information is available at that level. This weekend will see the effect, of any, of last bh and likewise a couple of weeks on. There will also be news from other countries on whether there has been an impact of schools returning and lockdown easing there on number of cases.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2020 20:19

It was LIZ but the government , or the media, or both (even worse thought) have spun it so tat many parents thought he said 'on the 1st of June' and so now it will be these bloody unions/teachers' faults if we don't reopen.

I actually think Boris appears increasingly baffled by the whole thing. He knows what he said and what his lovely graphs say and knows what the papers and other MPs are saying is wrong : but he can't (or won't) bring it under control.

Mary1935 · 20/05/2020 20:22

I’m not under standing track and trace at school. My son doesn’t have a mobile phone and they aren’t allowed them in the classroom.
My sons teacher has been in for one week over the past eight. Teachers have been on a rota.
She isn’t doing much at home if anything.
She hasn’t called - which they could have done.
Minimal input.
Another 6 weeks holidays coming up.
Not bad.
Me - key worker - working daily - making calls - doing referrals.
Me - working 6 weeks holidays.
I know what career I’d be sooner doing.

The government should stop there pay if they don’t go in. Unions!!! Deluded fools. There is a risk everywhere. It isn’t going away. Go to work and do your job that you get paid for.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2020 20:22

We do have to remember that most other countries were way further into lockdown and had impressively low figures before they brought children back. Not sure what comparison will show.

I read some very reassuring stuff about NZ recently: all the massive disruption to learning (2 years , on and off) following their earthquakes and no drop in attainment: and a narrowing of the disadvantage gap. I think that is really heartening so I like to share it.

Samtsirch · 20/05/2020 20:22

@Piggywaspushed
Boris, baffled?
Never !
🤣

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2020 20:25

Now he has no hair cuts, he looks even more so. Bedraggled and baffled.

ChloeDecker · 20/05/2020 20:26

I read similar happened after Hurricane Katrina too Piggy and both times no electronic distance learning as we know it today, took place at all because it didn’t exist then. No drop in attainment in both cases.

SpokeTooSoon · 20/05/2020 20:26

I wonder what the awkward squad teachers (not the majority) and their unions will come up with when the children have been back for a couple of weeks and nobody catches anything!

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2020 20:26

Come join us mary. Water's lovely.

VenusTiger · 20/05/2020 20:29

@CarrieBlue I responded to your post, I didn't mention rules or Yrs that aren't going back yet.

stopcock · 20/05/2020 20:30

If this thread is about the Goverment fucking up (again) how is it the teachers fault again?

ChloeDecker · 20/05/2020 20:33

their unions will come up with when the children have been back for a couple of weeks and nobody catches anything!

They will probably feel relief.

However, this hasn’t been the case in any country where the schools have gone back in any form, so fingers crossed that our country with 240k cases and nearly 39k in deaths bucks that trend, eh?

1forsorrow · 20/05/2020 20:33

@Mary1935 I know what career I’d be sooner doing. Why not do it then?

1forsorrow · 20/05/2020 20:34

I wonder what the awkward squad teachers (not the majority) and their unions will come up with when the children have been back for a couple of weeks and nobody catches anything! Probably something like, "Glad they listened to us and made it safe."

Boxachocs · 20/05/2020 20:35

@Mary1935 There are quite a few teaching vacancies if you want to try it? Can’t think why there are so many vacancies, seeing as it’s such an easy job. Doesn’t make sense...might be a few more vacancies come up soon too.

HipTightOnions · 20/05/2020 20:36

Go for it.

70* cases directly tracked to schools in France since reopening- lots of primaries closed back down.

Personally as a fully signed up member of the awkward squad of teachers who want to see the modelling behind the govt decisions, I’d be delighted if we opened and the numbers of people becoming ill and dying carried on reducing.

HipTightOnions · 20/05/2020 20:38

The government should stop there pay

Although, maybe not...

Maybe just the English teachers 😉

If I was a uni student I'd be deferring my year if my uni was not going back until next yr. How they can justify the fees is shocking

^This. My friend with college kids say a lot of parents with students in the UC system (in CA, US) are deferring until January or the following fall because they don't want to pay extra fees.

Oh FFS. If people want to home school, then home school. Nobody's stopping you. Everyone else should be able to send their children to school.

What do people think would have happened even just 20 years ago, i.e. pre-internet? People couldn't WFH then. We would all have just taken our chances and got on with it.

Which is what we should be doing now. In the same way that we take our chances every second of the day when we cross a road or get on our bikes or in our cars, or give a small child something to eat. I was an obsessive cutter-up of grapes, but when mine were small, I remember reading about a child who choked to death on a bit of sausage. I had weeks of sleepless nights because I hadn't included sausages in all the things I was terrified of.

I am not saying this as a joke. I had PND and much of my life was spent trying to eliminate risk for my children.

It's not a healthy thing to do. A degree of risk is normal. Covid comes into this category. Or would, until the internet came along. If it had been around when my first-born was small, I'd have been even more of a train-wreck, quite frankly.
