Let’s stop calling it ‘Kawasaki-like’ syndrome

  • The name for the COVID-related illness hitting children is Paediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (PMIS). Now that it’s recognised as a separate entity, we can discuss on its own terms.
  • Research suggests that symptoms appear 12 weeks after initial infection, six weeks after recovery. So the uptick in cases now result from infection with Coronavirus in February/March
  • Initially seemed to affect the under 5s; now it appears to be 5-18 year olds.

Up to last week, this was barely on our radar. Now it’s being increasingly reported. With the huge time lag between infection with Coronavirus and onset of MCIS, it seems wise to not simply dismiss Covid in children as ultimately benign (guilty of doing this myself).

I hope this is is somewhere we can discuss and share links. Will post some below.

Also re testing for Covid. Kawasaki happens about 4 weeks post infection so test wouldn't be positive anyway. So my DD had it around half term. Didn't give it to the rest of us though...

I just spoke to the GP who had the notes from a&e, It is something called erythema multiforme! And my other son had a sign of an infection in his blood test which is why they kept him overnight but all his obs were fine so came home!!

@OverTheRainbow88 my daughter had this at the start of the year. She's was very poorly for about four days and we spent two nights in hospital. Took her about a month to recover

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/06/2020 20:30

@Pippinsqueak Glad to hear she recovered. Did her rash kind of come and go for a while? So my son goes from looking like he’s recovering, then Suddenly His face is covered in a blotchy rash then 20 min later it’s gone, then maybe an hour later it’s all over his back! So weird!! The GP said he can go back to nursery with the rash 48 hours after his temp has gone?

No hers was all over and done with at once. Funnily enough her childminder said they thought she had k-disease last week when we were talking about it, then I found this thread. Doctors were sure it was EM
