  • The name for the COVID-related illness hitting children is Paediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (PMIS). Now that it’s recognised as a separate entity, we can discuss on its own terms.
  • Research suggests that symptoms appear 12 weeks after initial infection, six weeks after recovery. So the uptick in cases now result from infection with Coronavirus in February/March
  • Initially seemed to affect the under 5s; now it appears to be 5-18 year olds.

Up to last week, this was barely on our radar. Now it’s being increasingly reported. With the huge time lag between infection with Coronavirus and onset of MCIS, it seems wise to not simply dismiss Covid in children as ultimately benign (guilty of doing this myself).

I hope this is is somewhere we can discuss and share links. Will post some below.

In study link by Alex50 it also notes

All children except one were well above the 75th centile for weight.

Orangeblossom78 · 20/05/2020 19:40

First patient a teenage boy age 14 had BMI of 33 (obese)

It seems my 7 year old DD may have had this at the start of lockdown. The Saturday after schools shut she was more sick than I've ever seen her. I assumed covid. Then it became apparent she had scarlet fever symptoms- all over rash, strawberry tongue, fever of over 39, vomiting and abdo pain. Poor thing was so ill. GP prescribed antibiotics over the phone but she was ill for another 2 weeks. Not as bad. After recovery the skin peeled off her hands and feet and she's been complaining about leg pains ever since. Last week I realised that scarlet fever is a differential diagnosis for Kawasaki. Rang GP on Tuesday who told me not to be silly there's no link between covid and scarlet fever. Couldn't have been Kawasaki either. First thing this morning she rang back to say DD needs an ECG ASAP. And people wonder why GPs get a bad name...

Anyway I'm going off on a rant. I'm fighting guilt at the fact I i only contacted the GP as you need antibiotics for scarlet fever. Poor DD. She lay on me sweating and puking for 48 hours..

Now trying not to worry that she has some ongoing vascular problem. I guess we'll know after the ECG.

unambiguousbeard · 20/05/2020 20:43

Oh she's definitely not overweight. But highly likely she has some Asian genes.

Alex50 · 20/05/2020 20:46

@unambiguousbeard so sorry to hear about your daughter, I hope she makes a speedy recovery Flowers

More details this morning from Washington State. A Boston newspaper also reports that a US wide study is beginning given the rise in cases so it would be good to see their findings.

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/06/2020 13:09

And this!

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/06/2020 13:12

Probably best to ask a Dr.

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/06/2020 13:16

I’ve been trying for a few days!! In fact I’m still waiting for a GP call back about my tonsillitis 8 weeks ago 🙄

mac12 · 22/06/2020 13:40

Is your baby unwell - fever, grisly, lethargic? That rash could be many things but I think you should get a doctor to check that out. Call the surgery and say it’s about a baby - in my experience doctors make space for little ones. Good luck.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/06/2020 13:50

Surely if you phone and say your baby has an unusual rash then they will talk to you?

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/06/2020 14:00

Yes he has a temp as well. I will call again and ask. Thanks

SecondRow · 22/06/2020 14:03

I would not be happy to let that rash continue for several days without seeing a doctor. Call again, I realise services are under pressure but be really firm and don't let them fob you off, please, OvertheRainbow88!

Bol87 · 22/06/2020 14:15

Deffo get that rash seen! I’m not a worrier on the whole but that rash would be making me pretty concerned! Has your DC had any Covid symptoms to go alongside? If your child gets any worse with fever, lethargic etc, please go to A&E. You’ll be whittled off to the Covid side if they have a temp!

My docs has been much easier to get hold of during Covid I must say. I’ve been able to easily get same day telephone appointments! At mine, you can do video calls as well. When I had mastitis back in March, I had the joyous task of shoving my boob on camera for the doc to see 🥴

Hope your little one is OK!

Bol87 · 22/06/2020 14:19

Thought this might be helpful that I’ve seen circulating @OverTheRainbow88

I’m coming to this thread pretty late but thank you for posting it op, it’s really useful for people to be aware of this.

My ds had coronavirus symptoms in March, developed a rash a week later and was lethargic with strange other symptoms like cold sores, sore red eyes, and abdominal pain. 3 months later he’s just about back to normal. He’s half East Asian but not overweight at all, so that genetic link sounds accurate.

@unambiguousbeard How is your dd now? Did you get an ECG in the end? I hope everything went really well for her Flowers

StrawberryJam200 · 22/06/2020 21:52

I know I saw a post a few weeks ago where someone had a link to a website that showed about five different types of Covid rash, try googling.

SecondRow · 24/06/2020 10:33

Hi @OverTheRainbow88, did you have any luck getting a doctor's appointment for your baby?

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/06/2020 11:23

Yes thanks! Well they told me to send a pic then said to go to the local children’s hospital. My other child also got a non blanching pin prick rash so they both went! The one with the pin prick rash stayed overnight having hourly obs as they weren’t sure what caused it and then got discharged the next day, they weren’t 100% what caused it but all his obs were fine. The pics above they said were an allergic reaction to a viral infection!!! What’s odd is we’ve followed all the rules and they’ve not gone back to nursery so I’m not sure where they even got it from!! Both seem fine though! Thanks!

Devlesko · 24/06/2020 11:29

Is this like corona toes, my dd had this, in March, we've no idea how she got it, unless from school.
She developed it 2 weeks into lockdown and hadn't been anywhere or seen anyone.
The gp didn't even want to know her name when I called for advice, so she won't be in any stats.

Bol87 · 24/06/2020 11:45

Was the virus that caused the rash def corona @OverTheRainbow88 ? I assume they tested them both on admission I suppose!

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/06/2020 11:49

No they just said viral... they sucked some snot out their noses and said they haven’t got flu... I assumed that was the usual flu?!! To be honest it was all quite stressful, they would have sent the details to our GP so Will call and ask if they know more.

SecondRow · 24/06/2020 12:09

Ah, glad you got seen Smile

Still all a bit mysterious but you can always go back if anything changes.

unambiguousbeard · 26/06/2020 13:03

Sorry just seen this was reactivated!

That doesn't look like Kawasaki rash no. It's a uniform sandpaper rash. Bumpy. She also had red hot hands and feet. And peeling skin a month or so later.

Ecg was clear whoever asked. She had joint pain for weeks afterwards which I ignored. And tummy pain. Likewise!

Interesting re ethnicity. My DD is donor egg, supposedly Italian. However she has an asiatic eye fold and about a month before I kept looking at her thinking she has some asian blood somewhere. One day I'll get a dna test to see what her heritage is. Purely for interest.
