I know no one knows for sure but can anyone hazard a guess at how long the advice from the government is likely to stay as if you can work from home do so? I no it will be pure speculation but just curious!

I don’t know about government advice , but I’m hearing some companies are saying staff won’t be back this year. Our office has hot desking and we’re saying at the most each of us will be in one day a week.....

Canyoutellilikrchocolate · 19/05/2020 22:24

We’ve not been told anything. Guessing September??

Patch23042 · 19/05/2020 22:24

I would guess that it will continue until social distancing ceases, which may or may not coincide with the vaccine. I work for a huge company - I don’t expect to see my colleagues until the end of the year at the earliest. Contingency planning here is based on wfh for a long period.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 19/05/2020 22:27

Many companies have told their employees not to expect to be back until January. I think this is as good a guess as any. If working from home is working then why risk going back.

Deelish75 · 19/05/2020 22:34

DP works for a global company. They’ve been told autumn at the earliest. DP is vulnerable (not shielding) work have told him whenever he is ready.

Flamingodial · 19/05/2020 22:36

September earliest. But only for a very staggered come back / 1 or 2 days on office. Otherwise 2021 I should think

thetupperwareboxofdoom · 19/05/2020 22:37

My DH doesn't think he'll be back onto his office for about a year.

If your job can be done entirely from you home, then I don't see why they would encourage people to go back into their offices.

PleasantVille · 19/05/2020 22:39

What's the point of guessing, we need to wait and watch how the virus progresses. No one even knows if there will be a one date fits all solution.

Didkdt · 19/05/2020 22:39

My employer said we will carry on like this until a vaccine Shock

Heartlake · 19/05/2020 22:41

Slight derail but I hope never! Some facilities for meetings and face to face stuff, but where possible wfh to be encouraged. there are balances to be achieved but I think lots of companies will seriously be considering it now.

tappitytaptap · 19/05/2020 22:41

I think my employer (very large company, over 20k staff) plan for most of us to wfh for the rest of the calendar year.

Passthecake30 · 19/05/2020 22:44

Local government, large open plan offices, I think until at least the secondary kids go back, and then it will only for the people who really want to be in the office, or need to be in the office.

EnlightenedOwl · 19/05/2020 22:46

We aren't going back to full time in office business has realised home working saves them money and they are taking less space in the office they are moving to next year as a result. It will probably be 2 days in 3 wfh or something like that

AlecTrevelyan006 · 19/05/2020 22:46

My company - no one furloughed and about 90% now WFH. Only people in offices are small number who sort of need to be there. Heard today that in June they intend to open up so those who want to work in offices can do so but no one will forced to and unlikely to return to 9-5 M-F for the foreseeable future

ethelredonagoodday · 19/05/2020 22:46

I work for a local authority, not frontline. We've been told we will be WFH for the forseeable future.

MuthaClucker · 19/05/2020 22:46

My company has said they will start phasing people back ‘later in the year’, and that priority for return will be those who specifically request it- so those people who are currently having difficulty with some of the larger technical transactions or those who’s mental health is suffering for being at home.

I think the majority of people I work with have now adjusted and are liking wfh so aren’t bothered about rushing back.

PicnicHamper · 19/05/2020 22:48

I wonder whether many offices will ever go back. Once you have proven work from home works why would a company pay for expensive city centre offices?

I feel sorry for the young. How miserable to start you career without a community of fun colleagues to go to the pub after work with.

EnlightenedOwl · 19/05/2020 22:50

Ours has furloughed people who can't wfh because of their job. Some of those will eventually return but only about half will be needed so redundancy consultations for the rest

AnxiousAnnie13 · 19/05/2020 22:53

MIL and I work for different global companies and neither of us are expecting to be in any time soon. MIL has pretty much been told she won’t be back this year.
WFH where possible is a pretty easy thing for the government to say compared to school closures and shutting shop/restaurants etc and it will have a big effect on the number of people on public transport so I think it might be one of the last things they change the advice on.

Healthyandhappy · 19/05/2020 23:18

My employer asked for volunteers to maybe do one clinic a week / month as a trial with poss getting bk to work jan time. I'm.a nurse wfh

wobblywibble · 19/05/2020 23:25

I work for a big US/Global company and they have said September at the earliest and even then it will be people who need to be in the office or those who want to be. The positive of the situation is they're now actively encouraging WFH if people want to, the stigma that came with it before has gone.

Muddlingalongalone · 19/05/2020 23:35

My UK head office of a multi national has a plan in place for max numbers possible in office but heavily reduced from normal so until social distancing is lifted I'm not expecting to be back in full time for the foreseeable, if ever - have already discussed with my boss the work/life balance benefits I had achieved pre school closure.
We could already wfh on an ad hoc basis but I think this will change things forever.

pinkpinecone · 19/05/2020 23:37

I've no idea, but I do think many companies will move more staff over to wfh on a more permanent basis when they see how much money they could save on office space. If productivity/sales etc remains the same why make people work in an office 5 days a week? I think we could all benefit from more flexibility.

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/05/2020 23:38

People who work for my husband's company who are currently working from home have been asking to go back into the office to work.

I was shocked about that. I thought that they would prefer to work from home but apparently not.

Fifipop185 · 19/05/2020 23:39

No set date for me, we are a small team in a medium size company, in an incredibly busy industry fright now. I can't go back to the office until my youngest DS goes back to school, earliest September. Our office is being used by another team in the company who have wanted to take ownership of out office for ages. We can work completely remotely but they can't so we might not have an office by the end of this, which suits me fine. I'm enjoying being at home with DC who are old enough not to need me too much during the day, and I'm not being a tired stressed out mum like I was before.
