Will there be teaching when schools go back?

At the minute, schools are for childcare only. My children have been attending 3 days a week as we're both key workers. Do any teachers have any info about when schools open in June whether teaching will resume or will it be childcare still? Thanks

It will be teaching.

MissClarke86 · 19/05/2020 18:34

Sorry, to expand, the curriculum and delivery of it will look very different but because they will be in year group bubbles it will be possible to actually teach now. (I’m a teacher)

WillowSummerSloth · 19/05/2020 18:35

That's great thanks.
My school are going to keep bubbles so my kids will remain in a key worker bubble so I was just curious about whether there would be teaching as so far it's been only childcare. That's a relief!

My school’s key worker children have always learnt whilst they are being cared for as we’ve had enough staff and children attending to be able to plan activities around a weekly theme. Lots of these activities are practical and hands on but have also included some science, maths and writing in an informal way and plenty of outdoor play.

The prime focus will still be on child care for these children until we open more widely (June 1st?) then we will switch to more formal learning / lessons with children in rough year groups. It is best to ask the school what plans have been made.

As the DfE guidance keeps being updated the school might not have finalised their plan yet.

Thanks both. The teachers have been absolutely amazing in this. Full of positivity and super supportive. I've nothing but massive respect for them all. I am keen that the kids do get back to some learning soon though so it's a relief to hear its going to be teaching based.

If my kids have to remain in the key worker bubble, it will be more tough for their teacher due to mixed aged group I guess.

I know several schools who gave told parents that they will not be able to return to the type of learning children are used to. My school surveyed the parents and 85% said they will not be sending their children in. We will be splitting classes into groups of 10 Plus two adults whilst still providing home learning for those who don’t return. We have made it very clear normal teaching will not return until September

StSaulOfSnacks · 19/05/2020 18:56

Teaching of the same stuff you'll be given to home school with if you don't send them in.

livingthegoodlife · 19/05/2020 18:57

Our school have advised it will only be the home learning sheets and not actual lessons. Basically supervised homework. So along with all the weird rules and annoyance of school run(when I have other kids who don't fall into the category) my child will not be returning (yet).

Shingles443 · 19/05/2020 18:59

We’ve had guidance from our school today that my year 1 child will not be following the curriculum and time will be spent focusing on mental health. He won’t be returning in June.

littleducks · 19/05/2020 19:12

I think schools doing it differently.

Our have provided some teaching for keyworker place kids which is inline with online home learning task for year.

They have published loads of info about how they plan to run and said from June no more online school for year groups that will be in school as teachers can't do both. Kids will be in year group bubbles or keyworker bubbles with slightly wider range (parents choose one and child can not change). They will do project type work rather than subject lessons. No homework will be set.

They expecting bubbles of around 12 from parental responses to survey asking who wanted places. Which I found interesting as didn't tie in with posting on class WhatsApp groups.

Cookiecrisps · 19/05/2020 19:14

I think many schools will choose to focus on the children’s well-being and mental health to get them settled into school before focussing on learning. Things will vary from school to school with regards to the format of learning and lessons due to how they are / can implement the DfE guidance.

Cookiecrisps · 19/05/2020 19:15

*are planning to implement / can plan to implement the DfE guidance.

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 19/05/2020 19:19

V v v little learning.

Hugely challenging in terms of what can be done.

Teachers in my school being advised to, for example, show a film/documentary on the whiteboard and discuss it

SqidgeBum · 19/05/2020 19:24

I am a secondary teacher so I cang speak for primary but we are taking our year 10s and 12s back on the 8th of june and we will be teaching as much as possible. The reason they are coming back is so we can get as much done as possible as they just weren't submitting enough work from home. It will be small classes, staggered times, and they may not have their normal teacher, but we as a department have a full plan of lessons to follow so each kid is being taught the same thing. I think it is going to be pretty full on tbh

VashtaNerada · 19/05/2020 19:27

We’re planning to pretty much teach what we had planned for summer term, with a worksheet option for keyworker children / children who are staying home.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 19/05/2020 19:32

Ours have said they will only be doing the same sheets that we have been doing as home learning. And the home learning will continue being sent for those who have decided to keep children at home.
My friends son is in a school where they have said that they can't continue sending any home learning as all of their teachers will be required to teach the groups that are in. Which means no home learning for years 2, 3, 4 or 5.

thunderthighsohwoe · 19/05/2020 19:33

We’re teaching the same activities to the R, 1 and 6 children who return that will be set for those who stay at home, IYSWIM. The difference is that they will have a teacher there actually teaching the material, extending the children who need a stretch and supporting those who need help.

Our key worker bubble will have to continue as we have been doing - supporting what they have been set as home learning as best we can, when we have seven different year groups doing seven different activities in one room.

Comefromaway · 19/05/2020 19:37

The year 10 at Ds school will spend 2 hours a day with their form tutor, not even their subject tutors. No actual teaching will take place.

FourPlasticRings · 19/05/2020 19:37

Depends on the groupings and number that go back. If we have to keep them in groups of 15 or so, we've not got the teaching staff so half the kids (over half as some teachers won't be returning) will be taught by TAs, who may not even be familiar with the yeargroup or curriculum. It'll be planned by a teacher but I wouldn't say they'd be being taught.

SqidgeBum · 19/05/2020 19:39

@Comefromaway as a teacher I dont see the point of that

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 19/05/2020 19:40

I imagine the «year group» bubbles will have some teaching (why not? children from the same class with a dedicated teacher).
However for «key workers» bubbles, ie where the whole year group is not back then I imagine it will still only be childcare as they will be from different class levels.

FourPlasticRings · 19/05/2020 19:43

why not? children from the same class with a dedicated teacher

You're presuming they'll have a dedicated teacher. It totally depends on the number they get coming back. If there's one class teacher for thirty kids and you split them into two bubbles of fifteen, where does the teacher for the other fifteen come from?

Wishforsnow · 19/05/2020 19:43

Why would not teaching take place. That sounds ridiculous. The teacher would be there as would the students so why not?

Saladmakesmesad · 19/05/2020 19:44

For year groups - same work that’s going home. For key workers groups, no.
