Will there be teaching when schools go back?

At the minute, schools are for childcare only. My children have been attending 3 days a week as we're both key workers. Do any teachers have any info about when schools open in June whether teaching will resume or will it be childcare still? Thanks

A school I know of has said it will be worksheets only. Many of the bubbles will be supervised by a TA as not enough teachers due to having to halve each class plus the number of vulnerable and shielded staff.

Fourplasticrings split days of teaching groups in for 2.5 days of the week.

My head told us they can't do that-- we've been told to have them all in full time.

Seems to be no general consensus as to what will be offered. I'll maybe ask at school soon. And I'm not sure any of you can answer this as it may well be school specific but would my reception aged child be in key worker bubble with my other children or in his reception class?? I'd much prefer him to be in his reception class.

@SqidgeBum

This is what the letter says

The school aims to provide half days of learning Support for year 10 in reduced tutor groups and for year 12 in reduced subject groups. Students will be based in one room. The learning we will be providing from now on will seek to reinforce previous learning rather than explore new topics.

Sorry, to expand, the curriculum and delivery of it will look very different but because they will be in year group bubbles it will be possible to actually teach now. (I’m a teacher)“

Please could I ask, (sorry WillowSummerSloth 😊) what provision you are making for vulnerable children who won’t be returning, there must be many. Will distance learning continue?

Saladmakesmesad · 19/05/2020 20:30

@WillowSummerSloth Reception class, definitely.

StSaulOfSnacks · 19/05/2020 21:05

They will be in a bubble with their siblings. Minimises the possible contacts for the whole family and others in the bubbles.

WillowSummerSloth · 19/05/2020 22:06

Conflicting answers! Thanks for the input everyone, I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I would be less happy with my youngest in a key worker bubble if his peers were being taught in reception.

Yes depending on the school and also varying based on the needs of the overall year group.

  • lots of schools are doing split weeks though govt guidance is not to

WillowSummerSloth at my school we have to choose if we want our reception aged children to stay in the key worker bubble or go in with their peers in reception.

Preference would be for them to go in reception, however this is going to be unworkable due to the staggering of drop off & pickup times. Older siblings in key worker bubble start an hour before reception class, And similar at home time. It’s not really manageable for a working parent to do 4x school runs in one day and only key worker kids have access to the after school provision so it’s likely they will have to stay in key worker bubble.

Plus like pp says, siblings staying in one bubble minimises contact for the family.

My school is teaching properly (as can be) to the returning year groups.

FlamingoAndJohn · 20/05/2020 07:11

We are teaching as properly as we can.
Although it will be difficult in reception where you learn through play.

It was difficult to teach key worker children when you have a bunch ranging from reception to year 6. But now it will be year groups so no reason not to.
What we are going to find hard is phonics was we usually set for phonics and we can’t in this situation.

We are using year 3,4 and 5 teachers to cover the other groups.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/05/2020 14:33

Seems to be such a huge variation.

I've heard that schools in our LA will only be open for three days per week and some, if not all, won't be opening from 1st June but gradually over the next two weeks due to staff and classroom constraints.

Certainly here, schools won't be a reliable option for parents going back to work
