Hi does anyone have information, thoughts about when travel/holiday restrictions from England to Wales (Holiday self catering within Wales) may be lifted?

As others have said amber phase for second home owners, green for tourists.

Where does it say that? I couldn't see anything specific in the WalesOnline link posted earlier.

MintyChapstick · 18/05/2020 16:47

ToffeeYoghurt Don't be so bloody ridiculous, of course its not 'racist' to tell people from England not to come. We are in the middle of a pandemic in case you haven't noticed, and we've still not peaked here yet.

Do you have any evidence of all these hundreds of thousands of tourists who've come into the UK? Because that sounds like the sorf of guff Nigel Farge would come out with,

CoachBombay · 18/05/2020 16:51

Toffee yoghurt Cardiff airport the only international airport in Wales is closed.

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 16:53

Did I say it was tourists? I stated the undisputed facts, confirmed by the government, that a minimum of 95,000 arrived at UK airports over the last two months. 53,000 were British citizens. That means nearly half weren't. Who they were or why they came, and more importantly where in the UK they were going, is not known.

It could be deemed racist if the Welsh airports are amongst those receiving people from abroad but not from the rest of the UK.

Are the Welsh airports still operating?

GruffaloandMouse · 18/05/2020 16:56

@BoyGirlBoy3 yes, same here. Need to pay by end of May!

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 16:57

Thanks @CoachBombay
I posted my reply to Minty before I saw your post.

Ok, so fair enough then. Wales is doing it properly. It's a shame the rest of the UK didn't follow suit. If not closed borders, checks and quarantine - like most of the rest of the world.

The UK is one of the only countries worldwide that hasn't implemented some form of border restrictions during the pandemic.

MintyChapstick · 18/05/2020 16:59

As you've already been told upthread, Cardiff if the only major international airport in Wales and its closed. So the answer to that question is no.

And the English are not a 'race' by by the way.

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 17:07

A PP did, yes, politely answer my equally polite answer. After your post that didn't answer my question but did instead rant uninformed accusations at me.

Are the Welsh a race? I know the Irish are considered one, at least for the purposes of race discrimination cases. Jeremy Clarkson was charged with racism following the incident a couple of years ago when he assaulted his assistant. He called him an Irish something (can't remember exactly what).

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 17:11

Regardless of one angry poster, it's interesting to see the differences in UK policy re the lockdown.

The Welsh international airport is closed. I don't know if Scottish airports are closed. Likewise NI. English ones are most certainly open. Like I said, more open than almost anywhere else in the world during the pandemic.

It's not unreasonable to question us having a lockdown whilst we have no checks or quarantine at the airports.

Well done to the Welsh government for doing more to protect its population.

CoachBombay · 18/05/2020 17:14

Toffee yoghurt I honestly think closing Cardiff Airport which is part owned by the WAG (I think), was more to do with cost than safety. It's also not international as in there's no flights to China or the US from there it mainly flies to European destinations and to go to USA you have to transfer at Amsterdam.

ballsdeep · 18/05/2020 17:16

I wouldn't hope for it tbh.

CoachBombay · 18/05/2020 17:17

Not that international* I should have said. Apologies

MintyChapstick · 18/05/2020 17:42

To be fair Toffee you were rude first, accusing concerned Welsh people of being racist. Its nothing to do with racism, people are genuinely worried in tourist areas.

LockdownLoppy · 18/05/2020 17:50

I live in Wales and have a cottage booked for a week in August, its about a 40 minute drive away. I'm not totally confiden we will be going, booking can be cancelled up until two days before.

NothingIsWrong · 18/05/2020 17:53

My MIL still owns her childhood home in Wales and we were hoping to go at the end of July. Not overly hopeful though...

We go every year for a couple of weeks at Easter and a couple of weeks in the summer.

hawai40 · 18/05/2020 17:58

Sorry I too tried the links. What phase would visiting family in Wales fall under ?

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/05/2020 18:01

Oh please. Why see something that wasn't said? People like you desperately seeking offence when there's none. Why? Is it your own prejudices influencing you? Are you secretly hoping to find a nasty anti Welsh English person?

I asked if the airport was open. Pointing out if it was, there was a potential claim -given it could be viewed as racist if people from abroad were allowed on but not English people. All irrelevant as the airport isn't in fact open. It's not necessarily me that would've viewed that as racist btw. I said somebody might.

And yes, I agree with you. Tourist areas, including London, shouldn't be seeing unessential travel during lockdown. Hence my question about airports. Because in England at least, there are no airport restrictions.

Around one hundred thousand people at least have come into the UK. It doesn't matter whether they're tourists, returning Brits, or anything else. We should like everywhere else have checks and quarantine. The virus doesn't care if you're a tourist or homecomer.

Patch23042 · 18/05/2020 18:09

DP and I were hoping to visit his old uni friend in Llandudno in early Sept. I’m still hopeful.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/05/2020 18:10

@BoyGirlBoy3. No children. Grandchildren, but they aren't coming.

BoyGirlBoy3 · 18/05/2020 18:25

@CaptainMyCaptain ahh I see, I am limited for rebook options as middle dc uni has no half term week in the autumn

OP posts:
BoyGirlBoy3 · 18/05/2020 18:26

@Patch23042 we still have hope

CoachBombay · 18/05/2020 18:30

hawai40 once non essential travel is lifted I suppose, think that's amber. But you won't be able to visit, visit. You can only socialise even in the green with social distance in place right now.

PhoneLock · 18/05/2020 18:52

We only want to visit, we don't need to socialise.

SemperIdem · 18/05/2020 23:39

Quite some time, I think.

I don’t foresee the schools opening before September. The R in Wales is still too high. If the schools aren’t open, they won’t open tourist areas. The currently furloughed are the backbone of the tourist industry, if the children aren’t in school, they can’t work.

When the schools open so will the tourist industry.

AlohaMolly · 18/05/2020 23:45

I think I read that accommodation without shared facilities can open in the amber phase, so I took that to mean self catering accommodation. I work for a small holiday home management company in very north wales and my entire village earns its money from tourism Sad I do think, though, that the WAG are hoping that by keeping us in lockdown as long as possible, they mig be able to get the R down low enough to open a short but intense tourism season mid July - August. So many of us need the money, but at the same time we haven’t even reached our peak yet!
