If you've recovered from C-19 are you feeling safer?

Just that really. Assuming you are immune once you've had it and recovered, how do you feel? Relieved it's over and done with or no?
Asking those who've had it confirmed via a test.

Anyone?

I haven't had it (or at least not diagnosed) but my partner has. He's mostly recovered now. It does make me feel more relieved, I feel if I would have caught it then it would have happened while locked in the house with him. When I go out now for shopping I only keep my distance to make sure I dont spread to other people, but I'm not scared about getting it myself. It's a much more comfortable feeling.

Mrsemcgregor · 18/05/2020 10:54

Not really because I haven’t seen any solid evidence that suggests even a short term immunity? Just assumptions based on other viruses. I would be delighted if someone has a link which says otherwise?

ITonyah · 18/05/2020 10:57

I wasn't tested (sorry OP) but had something that sounds identical.

Obviously as I wasn't tested I assume I haven't had it.

The economic and MH fallout of this worries me far more than the virus itself anyway, so having had it or not makes little difference.

Spinakker · 18/05/2020 11:31

I feel sure I had it in Feb. Although not confirmed it was unlike anything I've ever had before. I do feel safer.

Porcupineinwaiting · 18/05/2020 11:36

Am recovering now (8.5 weeks in). I feel a little safer than if I hadn't had it but I'd still say I still take more precautions against catching it again than 90% of people I see out there. Probably because I know that, for me at least, it can be an awful disease.

MinteeFresh · 18/05/2020 11:38

Too early for this one but lots of papers show that immunity to the 2 previous human corona viruses, MERS and SARS persisted for around 3 years at least eg here www.medscape.com/viewarticle/870592_3

It seems likely therefore that this closely related viruses will have similar response in human immune systems. I have seen some research that suggests that very mild or asymptomatic cases might not stimulate a strong enough immune response to offer protection for that long (Unconfirmed) but if you've been significantly ill with covid 19 you are v v likely to be immune for at least until the vaccine is widely available imo

Porcupineinwaiting · 18/05/2020 11:45

@MinteeFresh that would be so good if it proves to be the case. I couldn't do this again - the common cold could carry me away right now.

Rollercoaster1920 · 18/05/2020 11:47

Although not tested and confirmed, Pretty sure my partner had it the week before lockdown because a work colleague did test positive.

It has changed our outlook as per a previous poster. Less fear, if we have had it, and recovered, then even if there isn't an immunity we have proven we can recover without medical intervention.

Lots of people round here not doing social distancing in the shops or park. So we aren't worried about catching from them (we have been known to fake cough into elbows to see if they move away!). We aren't anal about disinfecting shopping either.

So definately in a better place psychologically. However there are a lot of unknowns so not totally carefree. That is the worst thing, the uncertainty. Lots of unknowns about this virus.

ITonyah · 18/05/2020 12:04

Almost certainly a testing issue as happened in Japan.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 18/05/2020 12:06

No unfortunately not. I have complex immune problems and my immunologist has told me that I need to continue to shield as I could get it again as I may have been unable to correctly seroconvert and produce the IgG that might infer immunity. I am absolutely dreading it. It took 8 weeks of feeling absolutely horrendous for me to get through this and I just can’t face going through it all again. I am feeling so depressed at the moment (doesn’t help that I am living in a small flat and haven’t been outside for months).

WhoDrankMyGin · 18/05/2020 12:10

I think it will make me feel safer going on public transport (we're in London and I will need to go back to the office fairly imminently). Not sure how happy I would feel on public transport if I didn't know I had it.

but as others have said, they don't seem to know how long immunity lasts and whether you really have it. Also the virus, I guess, will mutate at some point, and who knows whether we will have immunity to anything else that springs out.

I felt better knowing the symptoms I had were 'it' if that makes sense. I'm asthmatic (though mild) so there's a chance I could have got it a lot worse. My cough was awful and I was breathless for weeks and weeks afterwards.

SunbathingDragon · 18/05/2020 12:11

The question of whether it really was covid and not another nasty virus lingers and also, how long is immunity and how long can previously infections people shed the virus and potentially infect someone. So no, I don’t feel safer (and whilst I wasn’t tested, I had very similar symptoms as a front line NHS friend who Is confident they had it and who I was in contact with - this was all before lockdown).

Mrsemcgregor · 18/05/2020 12:49

MinteeFresh thank you

ACautionaryTale · 18/05/2020 13:09

Pretty sure I have it now - no reason to think it will get worse so yes I'm relieved.

it actually started last Monday but I didnt think it was covid. I take esomeprozole for acid reflux which causes a persistant cough. I forgot to take them with me when I went to look after my mum on discharge from hospital, so went without for a couple of days until I sorted an emergency script. Started coughing. Didnt think anything of it. Except by Friday I was still coughing and I'd been taking my pills for five days by that point. Then Friday night - lost my sense of taste and smell totally. That NEVER happens to me. EVER

So yes, I think I've got it and a week later its showing no signs of getting worse or affecting my breathing. TBH, I'm pleased I've had it and can get on with life without worrying.

SimpleKindofLife · 18/05/2020 13:14

Thank you @MinteeFresh I really hope that's true.

I'm over 7 weeks in and still ill Sad having immunity would mean the world to me and my family right now and is one of things that is getting me through each day.

Keepdistance · 18/05/2020 13:52

I dont know if we had it , sorry but until ive had antibody testing still nervous.
I felt worse after day 14 though so ..

Yes, I feel quite safe now. I know that my family and I had it mildly and so even if we get it again, I am not scared. I feel very free and relaxed.

I remain worried for those outside my immediate family though, like my mum who has lots of underlying health conditions and is over 70.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 18/05/2020 18:43

@flashbac thank you. It is the little comments from people online like you that are keeping me sane. We will all get through this together.

SANDY2016 · 22/05/2020 01:45

Not till I know after two weeks in ICU I want immunity testing

ArcheryAnnie · 22/05/2020 02:08

I am two months in, still fairly ill, and I am desperate to be optimistic, but I'm not taking anything for granted. I am not a biologist, but I hear phrases like "viral load", and think I really can't bloody do this again. So I hope I am immune, and will look forward to eventually getting an antibody test, but in the meantime I am still under strict lockdown (mostly too ill to go anywhere anyway) and wiping down my shopping, etc.

Mytimetogo · 22/05/2020 03:12

@whodrankmygin
Were you tested? I couldn't get the test as I was first ill mid-March. I've been ill for weeks now, but no idea if it definitely was 'it'.

Mytimetogo · 22/05/2020 03:17

It looks like those of us who have 'probably' had it (untested) and who have suffered for longer periods are actually more fearful (A) it wasn't covid and B) we might get it again.

In this case it's not 'better the devil you know'.
