Antibody test approved in the UK!

Biscuit0110 · 14/05/2020 06:41

Fantastic news to wake up to this morning.

The antibody test has been approved in the UK, it is a 100% accurate and will be rolled out 'within weeks'.

This will be a game changer for the whole country, I can not wait to have one (very ill in February) will you be taking one?
Is this how we are going to get back on track? Combine with the track and trace app and we may just have a coherent science based route back to normality.

Yes I will absolutely be taking one as soon as I can. I was also ill in February and it took me six weeks to recover.

Peggysgettingcrazy · 14/05/2020 06:46

I want one. I, too, was ill in late February. I was really bad and still not get my sense of taste back.

I know we don't know if we are immune, but i really want to know if I had it or not.

CodenameVillanelle · 14/05/2020 06:47

Yes I will. I've been hoping for this. Although I had it mildly so I may not have produced enough antibodies to show or to provide immunity.

Redolent · 14/05/2020 06:48

Yes very positive news!

I haven’t been ill at all so it’s probably meaningless for me, but great in general.

AwkwardSquad · 14/05/2020 06:49

It’s really good news. Really hope we hear practical and deliverable plans to roll it out on a large scale ASAP.

On a personal level, I’d really like DP to have one as he had an illness with many Covid symptoms but it was just before Christmas so doesn’t fit in with the timescale for the spread of Covid.

Godzillasonice · 14/05/2020 06:49

I would take one. I had a cough, heavy chest and no sense of taste a week and a half before lockdown I have no idea if I had it or not so would be good to know.

Lindy2 · 14/05/2020 06:49

It worries me that we don't know if antibodies actually give any future immunity- I really hope they give at least some protection.

What I also think will be very valuable is that we could find out how many people really have had it and how many have had it but were asymptomatic. Let's hope that we find out that a lot more have had it than thought which would bring the mortality rate risk down too.

It's about time we all actually had some positive news but I think we're all learning with Coronavirus not to set our hopes too high.

Biscuit0110 · 14/05/2020 06:54

redolent You may have been one of the lucky ones and were asymptomatic.

It will be very interesting, particularly in the case of my neighbours who swear they have had coronavirus in early December - and to their credit were extremely ill with pneumonia etc, and have not been ill since.
If cases like this are proved, then we may get closer to finding out if it was circulating in the country before Christmas.

I definitely would take one. Only had mild symptoms but would be good to know.

Oblomov20 · 14/05/2020 06:58

This is good news.
I don't think I've had it, none of us, so probably wouldn't be sensible to be tested till the end, others are more important.

Which puts me in a difficult position. I do want to get it, need to get it, eventually, right?

JacobReesMogadishu · 14/05/2020 06:58

I hope they do manage to organise the rolling out within a few weeks. I won’t hold my breath. I’m certainly keen to find out if I’ve had it.

Fortheloveofscience · 14/05/2020 07:00

Really good news! I'd be amazed if previous exposure didn't give some level of immunity (though I'm not an immunologist so maybe just wishful thinking).

Back in Feb I had a weird high temperature and persistent cough that never developed into a head cold. I'm sure it's not corona based on the current understanding of the transmission, but DH works in a hospital on respiratory wards so if it was around then it's not crazy to think he/we could have been exposed.

BunsyGirl · 14/05/2020 07:04

@Lindy2 I agree that it will be really valuable to show how it has spread. It was weeks before I realised that I could have had the virus, so I was mixing with lots of people, as were my DC’s.

danni0509 · 14/05/2020 07:04

Good news.

Mooserp · 14/05/2020 07:05

Medichecks are offering them privately. £89 🥴

helly29 · 14/05/2020 07:07

This is good news, I definitely would want one. I'm a doctor and work with vulnerable patients, I'd like to know if I'm potentially at less risk of infecting them or my family.

However, absolutely no test in medicine is 100% accurate but if approved will be pretty high

borntobequiet · 14/05/2020 07:07

A test that is 100% accurate? I wouldn’t think such things existed.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/05/2020 07:08

I haven't had it as far as I'm aware. If I have had it then I've been asymptomatic. I'd like one at some point just out of interest but I don't think I need one immediately.

timeforawine · 14/05/2020 07:10

I'm tempted, i had a headache and sore throat for just over 2 weeks with intermittent nausea and loss of taste

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 14/05/2020 07:11

Positive news, I was very ill in early Feb and I'm convinced I've had it. I want myself and kids tested (one of my children was also stuck down with an awful illness just after me).! Question is.. how do we get hold of the testing kit and how much is it 🤷‍♀️

BunsyGirl · 14/05/2020 07:11

@Mooserp The Roche test? I thought that Medichecks were offering the Abbott test?

Sandybval · 14/05/2020 07:12

I would be interested, DS was hospitalised a few days before lockdown with trouble breathing (no asthma etc), a hacking cough that was making him sick he it was so relentless, a temp, conjunctivitis but weirdly zero phlegm which is unusual for a toddler hah. I felt a bit rough but nothing too bad, DH was pretty bad. Who knows though, plenty of stuff goes round anyway; but it will be useful for DHs work to know so they can get back to some sort of normality if people have had it.

cotswoldsapple · 14/05/2020 07:12

Does a positive antibody test from Roche mean you are covid-immune ?

Eyewhisker · 14/05/2020 07:13

The Bbc is reporting that the antibodies give immunity for around 3 years so great news. Frankly, if antibodies don’t offer protection it would be almost impossible to do a vaccine as that is how vaccines work.

JacobReesMogadishu · 14/05/2020 07:14

Does a positive antibody test from Roche mean you are covid-immune

I believe so, though nobody seems to know how long for . A month, a year, 3 years?
