Schools won't be reoping on 1 June, and if they do, I won't be sending my child

Unions will be doing what they exist to do and protecting the health of their members.

Until Boris can provide teachers with a safe workplace ie PPE for all staff, adequate social distancing, etc, unions will be telling members not to go in.

And if they do open, I won't be sending my child in as they wouldn't learn anything in the last few weeks under these conditions, and the health risks not only to the children, but to the teachers and parents, are not worth it.

Plus my child relies on a school bus to get to school and there is zero way of socially distancing on one of them. Or of running 3 school buses, say, per route, at an affordable cost.

Also, my dc is happy as Larry off school, and learning as much or more. Let's face it, how many kids object to longer school holidays? I know there are some eg vulnerable kids, but they can already attend at present.

Fed up of threads pretending all parents can't wait for schools to reopen. Not among the ones I know.

PicsInRed - self-fund what?

My dc staying at home doesn't cost the state anything? Confused

I’ll be sending my year 1 in and most likely my year 3 on work days as a key workers child. My office will be reopened and I’ll need to be there and I do not expect to be vilified for it. We have lost a family member to the virus and we completely know the devastating impact but we have no other choice. Those that can keep there children at home and want too, that’s fine with me but don’t criticise those that can’t.

effingterrified · 13/05/2020 12:52

mollycoddle - the FT have published it - google it or there are threads on here.

OP posts:
BillywilliamV · 13/05/2020 12:53

and on the upside any residual risk that might exist will be even further reduced if you all keep your kids at home.

effingterrified · 13/05/2020 12:54

Dancing - no-one is 'vilifying' you for it and anyway as a key worker's child your dc already counts and there is no change.

I am talking about all those being told their dcs can go back to school in June.

What PPE would you like staff to wear? Masks possibly protect the children from the teacher, if of sufficient quality and used correctly - they won’t protect the teacher from anything.
Gloves only work if used correctly, single use and removed and disposed of after touching something. They do nothing if just worn for hours at a time and not changed.
Aprons - ditto, might help until they touch something and then are just as protective as your clothes.
People have lost the ability to risk assess. Children are more likely to die of chicken pox than COVID.

Ozzie9523 · 13/05/2020 12:55

I won’t be sending my 8 year old back, don’t feel it’s worth the risk for 3/4 weeks of school and he’s fairly happy at home. Hopefully they will know a lot more about the virus in September and schools can prepare more.

Derbygerbil · 13/05/2020 12:55

What 60000? Something like 30000 have died in the UK so far.

60,000 excess deaths since mid-March, 30,000 were actually tested. Some of the remaining excess deaths will be directly related to Covid (ie on death cert but not tested - many care home deaths for instance), some indirectly related.

Concerned7777 · 13/05/2020 12:57

So everyone sending their dc back are now child killers ? Hmm get a grip !
Wont affect your dc because yours aren't going back so let us worry about the children we are killing and you continue as you are

cadburyegg · 13/05/2020 12:57

@effingterrified so who is paying you to be at home with your child? Most people can not afford to be off work indefinitely, and many employers will expect their employees to send their children into school/childcare where there are facilities available

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/05/2020 12:58

Not evehond

TerrapinStation · 13/05/2020 12:58

Why do posters have to keep posting this same thread, why can't MNHQ add them altogther, there's nothing new that can be said, post on one of the 300 other thread out primary schools possibly re-opening next month

Amimissingsomethinghere · 13/05/2020 12:58

'know there are some eg vulnerable kids, but they can already attend at present'

But what about the children at home without access to school meals (some fall under the radar) or those being abused. I'm glad you are finding it easy at home but many are not.

Jjcrackers · 13/05/2020 12:58

I'll be sending my child back. Only child, transitioning to senior school. I have weighed up the risks too.

effingterrified · 13/05/2020 12:58

Elisheva - it's about the risk to the parents and teachers not the children.

I can't see any reason why wearing PPE should magically fail to protect teachers yet is generally agreed to protect medics.

Anyone mixing with lots of people for their job, especially kids who don't understand social distancing, needs PPE.

OP posts:
CurlyEndive · 13/05/2020 12:58

That's fine to make your own decision OP. Don't judge others for making theirs.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/05/2020 12:59

Ugh, posted too soon.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to keep their children off indefinitely in case they pass it on to others. I need to do what is best for my own family, not what is best for other people.

effingterrified · 13/05/2020 12:59

Amimissingsomethinghere - see my previous posts about vulnerable dcs, who can already be at school now. We don't need to reopen all schools to all dcs to support the vulnerable dcs.

OP posts:
effingterrified · 13/05/2020 13:00

Waxonwaxoff0 - yes, I'm sure you do.

Did you want to publicise that though?

Good for you.

I cannot continue to produce food as a farmer with my kids at home safely. Whether it be normal school or up taking the key worker thing they'll be back in June.

GoldenOmber · 13/05/2020 13:03

What PPE is it you think teachers should wear?

PicsInRed · 13/05/2020 13:04

effingterrified

As long as you aren't furloughed for the purpose of keeping the kids home, or expecting either active homeschooling from teachers now back in the classroom, or expecting for schools to remain shut.

If you'll fund it yourself and genuinely homeschool, that's absolutely your choice - as it is for any homeschooling family. Crack on.

DahliaDay · 13/05/2020 13:04

There seems to be a mn stampede to send kids back to school

At any cost

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/05/2020 13:06

@effingterrified I'm a single parent with a job that isn't possible to do from home. I'm on furlough right now but if my employer wants me back at any point and school is open then DS will have to go in. Keeping my job is my priority.
