Best supermarket you have been to in the pandemic

Thought I would give some praise to the supermarkets that are all working so hard to make sure we can all eat!

Best by far in my area has been Tesco! Still have queueing systems in place only allowing certain amounts in the shop, one way system and also the only supermarket iv seen constantly disinfecting the trolleys!

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 all round for tesco

I haven’t actually got into Tesco or Asda as the queues are across the car park. I went to a small Sainsbury’s and that was fine. It was a one in, one out system and only a few people in the store at a time.

Futurenostalgia · 10/05/2020 10:43

I would say Asda click and collect was much better than Tesco.

maggiso · 10/05/2020 10:43

Waitrose is the best in my area (for safety and staff helpfulness) but there’s usually a long ( spaced out ) queue out side. In the early days , just before the rules came in, and the shelves were being stripped bare, they put piles of small tins at the ends of aisles so the elderly ( who were the ones expecting to stay in for 12 weeks) could get what they needed, and the staff easily restock. Marks and Spencer’s food hall is also good for a quick in and out and they usually have a bit of everything, on well spaced aisles. Unfortunately both are more expensive! The mini Tesco in our village is limited (good for milk and bread) and was the first place to get hand wash back in stock- but being a tiny shop runs out of stock quickly.
Sainsbury’s - I feel very unsafe shopping in- but bless them, they have put on more deliveries for people shielding!
I don’t have Lidl or Aldi locally.

potter5 · 10/05/2020 10:44

Definitely Waitrose.

Nekoness · 10/05/2020 10:45

M&S is best - well stocked, never wait more than 10 min to get in. But £££ as we normally shop at Aldi.

Local express stores are also great and well stocked - Tesco and little Waitrose.

Aldi - where we normally do our weekly, was horrific. Waited 35 min in queues where people were chatting and a meter apart. Completely disregarded social distancing in store, and worst of all... shelves were half empty of basic things like tomatoes and cucumbers. Abandoned after one try and now either go to Marks and try to get a coveted click and collect spot in Sainsbury’s

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/05/2020 10:45

I’ve only been out once. Our Sainsbury’s local is great. I was near to tears and the lady behind the till was so sweet. I’m disabled (invisible disability) and shopping / waiting is stressful. Only 5 in at a time.

Wonkydonkey44 · 10/05/2020 10:45

Tesco is the best here as well , Morrison’s makes you social distance to get in then it’s a free for all.

Osquito · 10/05/2020 10:45

Our Tesco and Aldi have been good - strict queuing system into store and plenty of space once inside (Tesco has wide aisles, Aldi let in only a small no. customers). M&S had a good queue + staff sanitizing baskets/trolleys, but I found once inside there were quite a few of us for the small store and I felt ridiculous backing up/leaping into an aisle to avoid the various older-aged shoppers who didn’t appear to really mind being stood right next to strangers.

Lonelycrab · 10/05/2020 10:46

I’ve only been to the little Tesco since lockdown started, haven’t even left my estate apart from bike rides.

Staff have been amazing, always smiling and they work so hard too, always re stocking, it must be relentless. Respect x

CountArthursgroupie · 10/05/2020 10:50

@JesusInTheCabbageVan You want to try working there! (You don't). Those announcements are so LOUD!

SquishySquirmy · 10/05/2020 10:57

Our local Aldi is great.
Well organised, nice atmosphere. The atmosphere largely down to the staff of course - friendly and smiley despite the weird working environment. But the staff in my local store are good in normal times too.
Staff at the door counting people in and out, stuff to disinfect the trolleys with, no £ needed for the trolleys any more.
Checkout staff were behind a plastic screen. Still chatty as ever, which is nice - for some people the weekly shop may now be a rare moment of human interaction!

Only downside was not being allowed to pack at the till (normally I enjoy the speed packing challenge!) So with a very full trolley it felt like I was constantly unloading/reloading/rearanging my shopping.

marlboroughlemon · 10/05/2020 11:14

Not Sainsbury’s :(
We kept getting weekly emails from the Chief ex saying they were feeding the nation, but impossible through all of March, April, May to get a delivery, not even to my ill and shielding parents with the government shielding letter.
Boots also not good :( - supposedly the nation’s pharmacy, but actually nothing useful was available for delivery during March, April, even now - the anti viral foam has been “Stock to be delivered soon” since March, as have most anti-bacterials. I was laughed at when I went to try to get a mask in March (they had signs up in Chinese saying they did not and had never sold masks).

Thank goodness for our local, independent pharmacy who have been brilliant.

Also Marks and Spencer, brilliant. Clearly supporting Uk farmers.

usernotknown · 10/05/2020 11:25

Tesco and the Co op.

Nameofchanges · 10/05/2020 11:37

Are the staff in the supermarkets wearing masks?

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 11:37

In Waitrose they are wearing those face shields.

usernotknown · 10/05/2020 11:41

Some wear masks and some don't.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 11:43

I don’t think PPE is compulsory for shop staff, (yet) they have the choice.

BakewellGin1 · 10/05/2020 11:47

Asda and Aldi here in the North East (Durham way) queuing system, one way once inside (with staff keeping an eye on this), cleaning station before entering, staff behind screens and those on shop floor have masks on mainly. No complaints here.

Tesco has been chaos and Morrissons seems to be do what you like and carry on so avoiding both of those.

Willowmartha1 · 10/05/2020 11:55

Morrison's without a doubt, always so friendly and the workers in there quietly stacking the shelves and going about their business impress me plus my NHS discount !

sestras · 10/05/2020 12:00

Tesco or Waitrose.

Aldi, Lidl and asda have been a free for all, stand where you like when inside situation.

PickAChew · 10/05/2020 12:03

Definitely markses, followed by our tesco metro. Our sainsburys local has been good, too but both our big and little coops are a bit of a nightmare.

PickAChew · 10/05/2020 12:05

This thread is making me miss waitrose. Don't have one close enough to justify a trip.

BeltaneBride · 10/05/2020 12:06

Lidl -rarely a queue.

QuimJongUn · 10/05/2020 12:07

My local Aldi and Waitrose have been excellent. Calm, staff and customers observing SD, well stocked.

I went to Sainsbury's at the start of LD and it was a total shitshow. After finding out how they've treated their staff (and Argos staff) through all this they're on my list of companies I'm going to be avoiding in the future.

AgeLikeWine · 10/05/2020 12:26

Waitrose is excellent, with sensible staff & shoppers observing social distancing and plenty of stock.

M&S very well stocked, but making no attempt to enforce ‘one adult per trolley’, despite being on a retail park so partners could wait in their cars, resulting in very long queues.

Lidl is a nightmare for social distancing because the aisles are so clogged up with promotional stock that keeping 2m away from people is impossible.

I have given up on Sainsbury’s. Far too many gaps on shelves.
