Hairdressers - any ideas? (and if you are a salon owner...)

I have an appt booked for just over a week's time. They called me with a few weeks ago, cancelling an existing appt.

I honestly can't see them opening and if they do I'm not sure I want to go yet.

I understand that they will have to carry out so many new safety measures that I'm a bit reluctant to be one of the first clients until they have really got it all sorted.

I heard on radio that they should

-spread clients out in the salon (this would work for mine as it's spacious anyway except for the basin area)

-Have a 15 minute gap between clients to clean chairs etc

-Have only one client waiting in the reception area

-Use PPE for staff and possibly masks for clients

As I'm booked for cut and colour ( around 2.5 hours) I don't want to be at risk and I can't see my salon getting all of this in place so quickly and training staff.

Any hairdressers around who have any ideas of what you will do?

The excellent article linked to by Bluntness would suggest that outdoor salons would be safest. Limited time with the stylist. Masks and reduce talking. Definitely no shouting. Enclosed spaces + time together is the greater risk.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/05/2020 20:35

I'm in Germany and heard from NDN these conditions required at hairdressers:

  • No more dry cuts - each customer will have their hair washed at the sink first

  • Distancing of chairs

  • Customers and staff must all wear PPE

  • I'm really not sure how they can trim around the ears Confused Maybe the customer pulls down the loops and just holds their mask in place for that bit ?

So no colour then. Dye has to go on dry hair.

I had an email from my hairdresser this evening stating theh won't be able to open until at least July 4th.
I'm growing my hair but could do with getting rid of the split ends and level it up a bit.

JoeySpecial · 11/05/2020 20:51

I think that for a while, going to the hairdressers wont be the the relaxing time that we are used to.

I feel sorry for hairdressers because the amount of sanitizing, cleaning and making sure people are set apart sounds really time consuming.

Where they might have had 10 clients a day lets say, they might only be able to have 7 due to all of that.

hopeishere · 11/05/2020 20:56

Also my salon bundled people in so there's people waiting for colour and others getting cut by the same person.

It won't be financially viable if they have to reduce numbers.

Horsemad · 11/05/2020 20:57

I've booked an appt for 4th July with my hairdresser, he said lots of people had enquired.
No idea if it will go ahead but at least I'm in the book!

Bluntness100 · 11/05/2020 20:57

I simply can’t imagine a hairdresser is more at risk than a nurse or a carer. That makes no sense at all.

A nurse or carer you’re with what could be many infected people for prolonged periods. A hairdresser you are with people for a limited time, don’t have to be face to face for anything more than a few mins, and can wear Ppe and have your client wear it.

Mobile hairdressers can even do their work in the garden on warmer days. Spending most of it behind or to the side of the person. Little to no time in front of them.

It’s got to be safe. Most hairdressers are under 65 too.

Bearbehind · 11/05/2020 20:58

It can be dried then coloured

GeraltOfRivia · 11/05/2020 21:01

My hairdresser. Ones to my house. We were rolling appointments but as it looks less clear today we've decided to just cancel and come back to it when we can. I look scruffy but it is unnecessary!

damnthatanxiety · 11/05/2020 21:06

Grasspigeons on no list I have seen has 'hairdresser' come out above 'care worker' or 'nurse' for Covid deaths. I think you have mis interpreted something

HeIenaDove · 11/05/2020 21:08

No problem with that for me @Bearbehind But i have long thick hair which takes ages to dry even WITH a hairdryer. So it will take more time which I would be okay with.

So washed Then dried. Then coloured. Then washed (to wash the dye out obvs) Then cut then dried.

Grasspigeons · 11/05/2020 21:16

damnthatanxiety - you are right. I am utterly convinced i looked at the ONS data this morning and it said hairdressers were at more risk and i was shocked. But there is no trace of that now! Just a reference to care sector being high but medical sector not being high. The daily mail quotes hairdressers (i just googled) but thats not where i saw it and im not putting that as evidence.

Nisse23 · 11/05/2020 21:29

I live in Denmark. We opened hairdressers on April 20, and there’s been no spike in infections.

I went in a few weeks ago for a trim. Here’s the situation here:

  • Hairdressers aren’t wearing PPE, nor are customers
  • You can’t go in sick
  • Wait outside until the stylist is ready
  • Only one customer per stylist
  • You must use handgel when entering
  • No cash payments
  • All equipment sterilized between appointments using a UV machine
  • No magazines - but you can use your phone

And that’s about it! Honestly, it was really straightforward. The hairdresser said they’re super busy, and they’re seeing the regular number of customers per day.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 11/05/2020 21:37

@nisse23 I’m pleased for you and so jealous at the same time! It shouldn’t be this difficult then honestly I despair

Stuckforthefourthtime · 12/05/2020 06:28

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii! It shouldn’t be this difficult then honestly I despair

But their infection rate is a small fraction of ours, the risk is much much lower. There are so many things that are crap about lockdown, but while schools remain closed I can't get that worked up about my roots...

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 08:12

@Stuckforthefourthtime I understand that but again going back to my rural area of Scotland with hardly any deaths/cases is it fair to treat the whole of Scotland the same? I’m interested to see how Nicola starts to open things slowly hopefully after this next 3 weeks

HeIenaDove · 14/05/2020 15:23

My hairdresser has put a message up asking customers to provide their own masks for attending appointments ready for when they are allowed to open again. Ive got one. I just have trouble breathing with it on. Will be interesting in a hot salon but needs must. I dont know where/how the older customers who dont shop online are going to get theirs.

TJH130 · 14/05/2020 15:26

As I said in the other post about this how about we ask Nicola Sturgeon how her hairdresser is tending to hers, given how vocal she is about the rules I'm sure she's having hers done by following the rules.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 14/05/2020 20:15

@TJH130 it’s really annoying me how other European countries are coming out of lockdown and hairdressers have been amongst the first to open yet the last here? I’m hoping Nicola will surprise me and allow them to be the first considering how much work a lot of hairdressers have put into allowing them to reopen! The government don’t seem to be telling salons what they need to have in place to allow them to reopen!

PilatesPeach · 14/05/2020 20:46

I was due a wet cut on the day after lockdown. Two weeks ago, I trimmed it myself after looking at various youtube videos. I have proper hairdressing scissors as I usually trim my fringe between cuts anyway. I am pleased with it. I may just get it professionally cut once or twice a year. I have almost waist length hair and it looks fine at the back too. I colour my own roots (to cover any grey) with a touch up kit too which I'll do at the weekend. Usually pay around £30 for the wet cut and the kit is about £6 but I got two for £9.

Maria53 · 14/05/2020 20:47

My mother's hairdresser is sending out everything she will need to dye her own hair plus her colour made up...

Maria53 · 14/05/2020 20:49

@TJH130 Nicola Sturgeon cuts her own hair with guidance from her hairdresser online.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 14/05/2020 21:37

I’ve seen people asking for their hairdresser to send them made up colours to apply but have had numerous hairdressers on Facebook saying they will not be doing this due to colour developing immediately once made up and can’t guarantee how it will come out. I will be waiting for my hairdresser it’s the one thing I splurge on and it is coloured in a particular style I dare not try and do myself
