Hairdressers - any ideas? (and if you are a salon owner...)

I have an appt booked for just over a week's time. They called me with a few weeks ago, cancelling an existing appt.

I honestly can't see them opening and if they do I'm not sure I want to go yet.

I understand that they will have to carry out so many new safety measures that I'm a bit reluctant to be one of the first clients until they have really got it all sorted.

I heard on radio that they should

-spread clients out in the salon (this would work for mine as it's spacious anyway except for the basin area)

-Have a 15 minute gap between clients to clean chairs etc

-Have only one client waiting in the reception area

-Use PPE for staff and possibly masks for clients

As I'm booked for cut and colour ( around 2.5 hours) I don't want to be at risk and I can't see my salon getting all of this in place so quickly and training staff.

Any hairdressers around who have any ideas of what you will do?

Yes - I think maybe they realised it was for the mental well being of at least 50% of the population. And most salons are capable of increasing hygiene rules relatively easily. Boris obviously does not spend much time having his hair cut ... It was a bit hot wearing a mask the whole time, and seriously boring sitting on my own with nothing to do for 35 minutes or so. But definitely worth it!

@NamesNamesSoManyNames I read somewhere I think about German salons, the client can remove the bits behind the ears to facilitate cutting but continue to hold it over their mouths.

@m00rfarm I’m hoping Nicola will surprise me and allow salons that have sufficient things in place to allow for safe practice to open in Scotland

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 11/05/2020 17:31

After this next 3 weeks that is

Just wondering about the not having own phone/magazine . Is this to prevent air particles or what is the rationale? Not being goady, genuine question. I’m jealous you’ve managed an appointment! Seems will be a while for us. I’m debating just growing my colour out. Seems the perfect opportunity.

Phones etc probably may carry virus I suppose? EG client comes in, washes/sanitises hands, then they touch their phone, recontaminate them, then touch the chair etc?

m00rfarm · 11/05/2020 17:43

Anything that may carry the virus, or we touch our eyes and then the magazine or phone etc - it is just one less thing to have to disinfect when we enter I guess!

July onwards, with 3 months backlog to catch up on. I'll be lucky to get an appointment before xmas. I picked a great time to go blonde Confused

PumpkinPie2016 · 11/05/2020 17:57

Everything seems to suggest July Sad

I have a short hair style and a colour when I go to the hairdressers- it's too long now, I dread what it will be like by July!

I miss my hairdresser so much!!

Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde · 11/05/2020 18:14

I had my highlights roots done In January and had a next appointment booked on 20.th March. I stupidly cancelled it and moved it to 27th of March- that one got closed as of lockdown.
Now my hair have 2.5 inch dark hair and I hate it so much, even I wash it regular and use Batiste blonde dry shampoo it still looks proper shit.. messy..
I can’t wait for them to open!

imsooverthisdrama · 11/05/2020 18:19

July now isn't it ,
I last had my roots done just before Christmas Shock
I was booked in on the 25th March, my hair is a mess .
I have acrylic nails too so all filed off . Confused

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/05/2020 18:31

Luckily I’m not too grey and can get away with longer. It’s a rubbish for women especially, who need regular appointments to feel human and be able to present themselves in a certain way in the office. Cuts, colours, relaxing etc. I was due a cut and colour just as we went into lockdown so it’s getting a fair bit long now. Luckily it was just a bob, now a lob.

Has anyone tried to cut or colour their hair from the myriad of online tutorials?

Dhs boss yesterday set up a face time FaceTime to discuss preparation for everyone getting back to work. I did dhs hair yesterday because of it. He’s far more precious about his hair than I am. Grin Full cut and colour. Looks pretty good and the second time I’ve coloured it. Third cut. First time he let me do it on top though, yeh! And definitely the most pleasurable part of lockdown. He said one of his male colleagues clearly hadn’t had his cut since lockdown and looked rather unkempt! I expect there’s a lot of that about...

Yellowbutterfly1 · 11/05/2020 18:35

I’m getting to the stage of asking my husband to learn from a YouTube video how to cut my hair.
I can cut his and my children’s hair as their styles are very straight forward but have nobody to do mine.

Bluntness100 · 11/05/2020 18:37

I just don’t get it. Other countries are managing it. I don’t understand why the Uk is different.

All that will happen is hairdressers will start offering to go to peoples homes, and it will increase risk as no guidelines and many will still claim furlough whilst being paid by clients .

It’s in everyone’s interests to let them open with the correct guidance on how to manage it.

Someone is clearly cutting and bleaching boris’s hair. Wonder if it’s Carrie. In fact they are all well groomed.

ChippityDoDa · 11/05/2020 18:42

The black market beauty industry has already started. A freelance eyelash person I once used contacted me with a rather cryptic message, encouraging me to call her to discuss the situation. I didn’t obviously since, aside from the rules around lockdown, I soon won’t have the cash to feed my kids do lashes are my last priority. But lots of people will I’m sure as she does waxing and nails too.

Humphriescushion · 11/05/2020 18:44

Similar experience for me today as m00r ( not uk) very organised and efficent and felt very safe. Lovely hair for a day or so now as well Smile

HeIenaDove · 11/05/2020 18:50

YY Bluntness The stress of all this is clearly affecting their hair growth Hmm

Stuckforthefourthtime · 11/05/2020 18:52

Um, because they (a) locked down earlier and (b) were lucky enough not to have their first major outbreak in a huge city dependent on public transport, so they have a tiny fraction of number of new cases and deaths that we have.

m00rfarm · 11/05/2020 19:07

Portugal locked down before they had their first death. I think that made a massive difference. I think we had under 200 cases when went into lockdown. In the algarve there’s less than 200 cases active. And 13 deaths in total.

Nanalisa60 · 11/05/2020 19:11

Rebook for First week July, you never know your lucky, but I would not but your house on it!!

Wehttam · 11/05/2020 19:24

If salons open up for long and have stylists do 2 shifts, maybe 8-3 and 3-10 I’m sure people would be accommodating enough to take late or very early slots. It’s a pain in the arse but not impossible. I’d also be more than happy to sit with a bin bag over me instead of a gown.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 11/05/2020 19:50

Same I would do anything they asked just to see them! Yes other countries locked down earlier than us but hairdressers are in the first phase of them coming out of lockdown just like we are attempting to do now albeit slowly, even the second stage would be ok but July? Perhaps even longer for us poor sods in Scotland? My rural area has less than 30 deaths and never above 5 in hospital

Bluntness100 · 11/05/2020 19:56

My rural area has three deaths. All elderly. It’s batshit that as a healthy 51 year old woman, I can’t get my hair done by a perfectly healthy woman in her thirties. Whilst wearing ppe in my own home.

imsooverthisdrama · 11/05/2020 20:24

I know it wouldn't be so bad if they were opening from 1st June then we could book in ready . If they hope to have small weddings allowed by June then why not hairdressers with distancing.
I can't go back to work with this mop on my head and ds is autistic and won't allow me to trim it , just 1 barber that he knows that is very good with him . so gods knows what his hair will be like by July, and then it may be few weeks then because they'll be queuing round the block .

Grasspigeons · 11/05/2020 20:30

Sadly, the list of deaths by occupation had hairdresser as way riskier than nurse or carer. So as much as i want my hair dont i want it to be done in a safe way for the hairdresser and me

Chillipeanuts · 11/05/2020 20:32

Bluntness100

But surely if they wear ppe. The client washes their own hair and dries it. They aren’t face to face for any length of time , what’s the risk?

Indeed. Imagine care home staff carry out a great many more intimate procedures for personal care.
