I find this really really funny. Coronavirus is running riot in England and they’re putting international flyers in quarantine. Where do they think these people are coming from that has more coronavirus than the U.K.!

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 10/05/2020 08:12

Yes, we're an international laughing stock. Cant wait to see what else the blond buffoon will reveal later.

TheCanterburyWhales · 10/05/2020 08:16

Regina, my thoughts exactly!

Who are they thinking is going to let Brits into the second country to fly back from in the first place? It's the typical Britain centred view of things- any Brit flying into another country is probably going to need another 14 days isolation there, then they can have their 14 days holiday, then fly back, then isolate for another 14?

Say what? Confused

notimagain · 10/05/2020 08:18

Ive seen a couple of the ways in which quarantine it is being performed for essential workers on short stays and it's pretty onerous - in one case complete confinement during the whole short stay, in another it was a combination of an app, defined area of movement, spot checks by hotel staff and the risk of random checks by police...the requirements for those arriving for long stays in those countries was equally rigid, if not more so....

In short if the UK wants to go down this road it needs to be announcing:

" we are taking this really seriously, we are not **ing around and going to rely on you being a good chap/chapess/person of honour".

TBH that is something I am struggling to see happen in the UK and I certainly struggle to envisage HMG paying for hotel rooms..good grief, the horror....

I'm afraid in the unlikely event, IMHO, that a really strict proper bells and whistles quarantine actually is introduced for the UK people need to understand that having family and family events overseas won't be a "get out" - quarantine can't just apply to everybody else, unfortunately the world has changed..

InOutofmymind · 10/05/2020 08:30

The collapse of the travel industry will put millions out of work, airport workers, traffic control, airlines, plane builders/suppliers, the high street shops, on line booking agencies, ferry companies border force, customs etc

Austria is testing people flying into the country (and out if you want) for a fee of around 190 euros, results within 3 hours.

Quarantining people now is Bolting the stable door.... what is the point of a passenger isolating at home but his family can come and go....plus we have zero means of enforcement.

Horsemad · 10/05/2020 08:38

Is this quarantine system just for people flying in, or also for ferry passengers?

Ozgirl75 · 10/05/2020 08:40

Back in March Australia was telling people coming into the country to self isolate at home for two weeks (which my husband did) but they found that people were flouting this which is why they brought in the hotel quarantine.
People in the U.K. just won’t bother to do it, I bet. My husband was ok as he had me to do shopping etc and he was allowed out for a daily walk but even he found it quite tricky.

notimagain · 10/05/2020 09:07

Is this quarantine system just for people flying in, or also for ferry passengers?

Good question, whether it covers both or not would be a good indicator of whether it's a serious effort or being done for window dressing...

And I do actually agree with a lot of inOutofmymind's comments - it should have been done earlier, it should have been done properly.

I wonder if the main reason for any possible introduction is to hopefully have relative ease of travel into/out of European countries as they possibly relax their restrictions over the coming months..- they won't want a nil quarantine UK acting as a bridgehead for CV-19...

That however sadly means the UK Long Haul travel industry might be stuffed for quite some time Sad

heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen · 10/05/2020 10:08

The UK are only (finally) implementing what most other similar nations have been doing for weeks. Holidays without a quarantine at both ends aren’t happening for a long time - deal with it

Who are they thinking is going to let Brits into the second country to fly back from in the first place?

Once the cuurent restrictions are eased, France will not be requiring trvellers from the Schengen countires (incl UK) to quarantine when entering the country.

TheCanterburyWhales · 10/05/2020 12:48

Yes, but what the French say they will do is implement "highly controlled restrictions" at the border. It doesn't sound like people are going to be waved through.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 10/05/2020 12:55

One article (BBC I think) implied it would be ferries as well but only focused on flights.

JacobReesMogadishu · 10/05/2020 13:02

I heard they’ll be doing spot checks with big fines if you’re not in. But surely people will say they were asleep/in the shower, etc?

I can’t see anyone going abroad on holiday in November so I imagine your holiday will be cancelled anyway. Foreign holidays are a thing of the past and likely to remain so for a long time.

GabsAlot · 10/05/2020 13:09

Well yes i will "deal with it" but if my flight goes ahead thats hundreds of pounds im losing if they dont let me rearrange my holiday

i dont know how it would work without tracking and people are already up in arms about the nhs app already

KeepWashingThoseHands · 10/05/2020 13:19

Classic. Someone agrees with the principle and thinks it should have been done sooner - right up until the point it has personal impact on them.

I get you didn't book your holiday expecting the conditions that may now be imposed but as above, a holiday is non-essential and if self-isolation of travellers means we all get out of this situation sooner (which benefits the whole economy not just tourism), it's a small price to pay.

Destroyer · 10/05/2020 13:31

They’ve done it in other countries. Countries that are now coming out of the other side 🤷🏽‍♀️

Only in this country (and America) do people argue the toss over things that are good for them. Refuse to quarantine and make all this last longer than necessary.

Do what’s needed hard and immediately and the time span will be shorter.

GabsAlot · 10/05/2020 13:52

I do agree it should have been done sooner if it impacted me im just saying i cant afford to lose hundreds of pounds and hope the airline will let me change the date

OP posts:
Frenchfancy · 10/05/2020 13:59

I'm sorry but you can afford to lose the money if it already spent. What you've lost is a holiday not the money.

GabsAlot · 10/05/2020 14:06

yes ok if you want to get techinical ive lost a holiday-atm its the deposit plus seat bookings but i dont want to pay the balance and then get nothing back/rearranged

Porcupineinwaiting · 10/05/2020 14:25

Given our current rate of infection, which looks likely to increase again shortly, I cant imagine many countries are going to be welcoming us with open arms without quarantining us when we arrive.

thegcatsmother · 10/05/2020 14:30

My db and his wife had to come back to UK for a medical appointment (HM Forces), and she had to self isolate for a fortnight when they returned abroad. It should be planes ferries, Eurostar and Eurotunnel imo.

Bool · 10/05/2020 14:31

You do realise that lockdown and quarantine is going to make this go slower and last longer. The point of lock down is to flatten the curve. That will make them whole thing go slower not quicker!

KeepWashingThoseHands · 10/05/2020 15:15

Lockdown and quarantine is making it go slower to avoid the NHS being overwhelmed and loads (more) people dying.

People flouting quarantine and making the case for not needing to isolate after non-essential travel IS making lockdown go slower.

I know which is worse in my view.

Bool · 10/05/2020 16:21

People flouting quarantine are making lockdown go faster because they are making the whole transmission speed up (which will shorten the whole thing but also risks overwhelming the NHS.)

Bool · 10/05/2020 16:23

My point is that a lot of people are saying up thread that if we stay locked down this whole thing will be over quicker. That is not true. This will be over once we gain herd immunity - either via a vaccine or naturally.

Gfplux · 10/05/2020 17:17

Isn’t this a NON story.

Let’s us wait for an official announcement from the UK.
I believe Johnson is recording a statement he will make this evening.
