How many children developed Kawasaki's before COVID?

How many now?

If statistically consistent, open up and get on with it.

ChipotleBlessing · 10/05/2020 11:06

All 8 of the children in the UK study later tested positive for covid19 antibodies, despite not testing positive for Covid19 at the time. This actually doesn’t indicate any problems with the tests, as this syndrome seems to appear some time after infection.

The BMI doesn’t indicate that they were all overweight. Most were above the 75th centile, but that is not overweight in children.

I'm more concerned about the massive mental health impact this is having on ALL children than some figures being distorted by the MN paranoia amplifier.

Maybe we are panicking a bit? every year children die of the flu. This article said that children’s deaths in this flu season were the highest since record began:
www.aappublications.org/news/2020/02/28/flu022820

Im not saying we should return to normal but we need more data before running alarm bells and making people more anxious

ChipotleBlessing · 10/05/2020 11:25

Who is suggesting panicking? The best use of this information is for parents to be aware of these symptoms and seek medical attention for their children if they display them. This is new information for parents. Discussing new information is not the same as panicking.

Keepdistance · 10/05/2020 11:44

Also a factor in parents choosing to send kids back.
Parents of BaME kids might consider it a higher risk.
I gymuess you would need to calc how many BAME children have caught covid and how many have had this reaction. At the moment it is still going to be small with at most 10% of london infected. (so 1m people)

With schools close though fewer kids than 10% might have already caught it though. But if we assumed before herd immunity 12x as many.
Are there 20 now so 240 maybe.

Velvian · 10/05/2020 15:52

@PicsInRed, it's not Kawasaki Disease. It has a lot of similarities to Kawasaki Disease.

woodpidgeons · 10/05/2020 16:08

I do find it slightly worrying that the alert was issued in the UK on 28th April, at which point there were 20 children in ICU, but there has been no further discussion or update.
Considering how much about the virus and lockdown is continuously over analysed by the media, it seems out of character.

I agree. Given the still small but rising numbers even though Children have been in lockdown for 7 weeks, I would have thought there would have been further discussion, update, or media questions in the daily briefings about this as a very important issue.

Kawasaki disease is more common in boys and significantly more common in BAME individuals. Thought to be due to genetic predisposition. Does this sound familiar?

Barbie222 · 13/05/2020 14:17

It's now 100 cases, from the 73 when the thread started, just in New York. We definitely need to know more

greathat · 13/05/2020 14:53

One of the kids in London has died. 14 year old

Keepdistance · 13/05/2020 14:57

other coronaviruses nl63 for eg have been shown to be linked to kawasaki.
More common in asian children under 5 but when they looked for nl63 antibodies etc most kids had had it by 5yo so if they were going to have a reaction it would be young.

Whataloadofshite · 14/05/2020 00:34

Well this is terrifying.
