Disgusted at VE celebrations

I absolutely cannot believe what went on last night in this country.

The government should never have encouraged this nonsense and instead should have firmly nipped the idea of celebration completely in the bud.

Absent Boris should have never implied lockdown will be eased on Monday a couple of days before a fucking sunny VE Day bank holiday when we still have 5,000 plus new cases every day.

It isn't rocket science.

I am absolutely appalled.

There wasn’t a huge spike after Easter though was there in English hospitals like people on here predicted / wanted to be true.

We'll meet again (in hospital)

Explain what will enable the 'resumption of true normality?' When the economy collapses because lockdown continues until there is a vaccine?

Small, baby steps. Look at the Irish plan. It seems logical to me. We're a long way off true normality, but if we all play our part, we can slowly start to inch our way back. Street parties (without social distancing, obviously no problem if everyone stays apart) only delay that slow return.

And honestly, if Boris and co had just spoken to us clearly and treated us like adults rather than the mixed messages we've been getting this week, more people would understand that.

Candyflosscookie · 09/05/2020 10:09

@jnglinghellsbells what do you mean "and as for the Scots" ??? You mean the Scots that made up a much higher per head of population of the Armed Forces in both WW1 and WW2? The Scots whose regiments were often the first in line to be sent out to fight? The Scots whose homes around the Clyde and Forth were one of the first to be bombed? Us? ODFOD. Angry

BackInTime · 09/05/2020 10:09

The virus won't discriminate though Oneandtwebty. These people will make us more likely to catch it in our necessary activities like shopping and commuting because they and their actions push up the R rate.

When are people going to get that the more they flout the restrictions for unnecessary social gatherings and purely selfish reasons the longer it will be before the restrictions can be lifted.

CodLiverOil556 · 09/05/2020 10:09

@PinkSparklyPussyCat the law that was passed on 27th March stated that only 10 people could attend a funeral. I've had to turn away loved ones from funerals - my co-workers have been spat at, called all sorts. I've been called a heartless cunt because I want to protect my staff who are coming into contact with at least 100 people a day. We are all terrified of catching this virus which would mean we couldn't do our jobs and because of our very specialised role couldn't be replaced easily.

Attitudes of the general public have astounded me and it's only when I explain the above that people get it and apologise for shouting/swearing etc. we're really trying to make funerals as normal as possible but we're not living in normal times at the moment

Megatron · 09/05/2020 10:10

Attitudes like this annoy me so much - other countries have managed perfectly well - what makes the uk so different? Oh yeah, half the population are fucking thick bastards.

Totally agree @MinkowskisButterfly. To think that these people were behaving like utter morons to celebrate VE day for a war when people went through actual hell. And we have 'wah wah wah it's been two months, we've had enough'. It's pathetic and embarrassing. No wonder this country is a laughing stock.

golddustwomen · 09/05/2020 10:11

Around 5 houses on our road had an outdoor bbq. Started at 11am, finished at 11pm. All very civil, sticking to their own drives. Turned into drunken singing, dancing, stopping cars from driving up and down the road. Then fighting, arguing, one bloke screaming 'your all a bunch of cunts' into a microphone at 10pm at night. Absolutely fucking ridiculous.

LellyMcKelly · 09/05/2020 10:11

This is Cummings’ wet dream - it is not about building herd immunity, - that ship has sailed. This. is a thinning out the herd strategy. Social Darwinism in action - reducing the number of the old, the sick, and the thick.

Those pictures are ridiculous. If a single one of those people have Covid, there's a high chance that all of those people now have it, who will then give it to more people.. and on and on it goes. No wonder I hate people.

ssd · 09/05/2020 10:12

What people at the type of street parties as shown on the news above don't get is if their parents or grandparents who were alive during the war, if they were asked to follow the rules, during an air raid or a blackout or during conscription, they bloody followed them and that's why we are all here 75 years later. These people having their street parties and celebrations close together, side by side when it's not allowed, would have been absolutely scorned 75 years ago. They seem to think they symbolise the spirit of VE day when they symbolise the exact opposite.

The ones having street parties and keeping 2 meters apart at all times are the ones doing it right.

Whitegrenache · 09/05/2020 10:13

I agree with @cushioncovers view

Lemonblast · 09/05/2020 10:14

It’s tough trying to govern a nation of entitled fuckwits who won’t be told what to do, who are too stupid to critically analyse anything that isn’t printed in the Sun and who are too ignorant to acknowledge that it’s the very generation who gained peace and freedom 75 years ago who are now dying in their thousands in our care homes. If those idiots necking Aldi spumanti with their plastic union jack bunting had an ounce of the strength, respect and resilience that our war heroes to, we’d ALL be out of this fucking mess a lot sooner.

Megatron · 09/05/2020 10:14

Can you explain this bigoted comment please @JinglingHellsBells? Why are you angry at the Scots?

And as for the Scots, if you are.....Angry

Megatron · 09/05/2020 10:15

@WelcomeToTheNorth

“Mental health” though. Where is the resilience?

Can you expand on what you mean please?

SudokuBook · 09/05/2020 10:17

Call me a cynic but I suspect this is a strategy of herd immunity by stealth.

Of course it is. Leak to the press about all the restrictions being lifted, publicly say they have to remain in place a few days later, knowing that people are treating it as de facto over, so when the spike comes in a fortnight the government can blame them, but really it’s what the government want.

FTMF30 · 09/05/2020 10:18

Why do so many people have an "I didn't see it do it didn't happen/people are exaggerating" attitude?! Boggles my mind.

People on our ward were all gathered together, kids all pkaying together and loads of drunken singing late into the night. It got way out of hand.

Scottishgirl85 · 09/05/2020 10:18

We had a lovely afternoon in our street, social distancing adhered to. We all said what a difference it had made to our mental wellbeing.

WelcomeToTheNorth · 09/05/2020 10:18

I mean that I’m sick of seeing people bleating about “mental health“ as a reason that they simply need to flout lockdown rules. They aren’t special cases because they are finding lockdown hard to deal with mentally, we are all finding it difficult. But where would we be if everyone said “fuck it, my mental health is more important”?

Itisasecret · 09/05/2020 10:19

All I saw on social media was pissed parents being totally irresponsible. Probably the same ones who will be up in arms when schools do not go back on June 1 (because they won’t and fully expect the number of cases to increase).

I’m angry about it, this is the thing we’d usually really celebrate being a military family, most people celebrating yesterday probably couldn’t even tell you what it meant. No doubt it will be even longer before I can travel the length of the country to see my family because people wanted a piss up.

Lemonblast · 09/05/2020 10:19

“Mental health” though. Where is the resilience?

There is none. I have a family member who shared a Facebook petition to get sunbed salons and nail salons opened. Because of ‘mental health’ Makes a mockery out of those with genuine mental health issues.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/05/2020 10:20

Wonder what the pics would look like from another angle though? A side on shot would be very different from a front shot.

Megatron · 09/05/2020 10:20

@WelcomeToTheNorth I completely agree actually. Your post sounded like you meant that mental health somehow didn't exist and that people should just be resilient.

I am really fucking pissed off with people thinking only about themselves. No one is finding this easy are they.

BackInTime · 09/05/2020 10:21

The idea of celebrating in the midst of a national crisis where tens of thousands have died including over 100 NHS and care workers is just mind boggling. Old people were chucked out of hospitals and left to die in care homes, some of whom will have been veterans and people are drinking Prosecco and eating scones as a mark of respect. Really? How is this even appropriate. Other countries manage to commemorate the war with dignity and respect and we turn it into an excuse to have a piss up.
