I absolutely cannot believe what went on last night in this country.

The government should never have encouraged this nonsense and instead should have firmly nipped the idea of celebration completely in the bud.

Absent Boris should have never implied lockdown will be eased on Monday a couple of days before a fucking sunny VE Day bank holiday when we still have 5,000 plus new cases every day.

It isn't rocket science.

I am absolutely appalled.

He’s never implied that lockdown would be lifted , the media did though - for weeks they have categorically stated lock down would only end when the 5 criteria were met

Wannabangbang · 09/05/2020 10:35

Same I'm appalled too, people do lack common sense in this country however and tbf most be not following lockdown never were in the first place :/ senseless, selfish morons. However much I'm bored and lonely of adult company i know staying home is for my own good and that of my children's and NHS workers but some people seem to think their immune and are running around b&q buying fecking plants and visiting granny and their 10 cousins once removed. It's happening on my mums street, luckily my neighbours been really respectful and stuck to it. This will never end thanks to the stupidity of so many idiots and the NHS and all the vunerable will bear the brunt because of this.

Healthyandhappy · 09/05/2020 10:35

Our cul de sac had a big bash everyone out all distanced however yes the kids didn't they all.played on bike on trampolines was lovely. Never ever seen all these kids my 5 year old slept well last night and was so happy

clumsyduck · 09/05/2020 10:36

People here had picnics etc in their own front gardens . I wasn’t in a “celebration” kind of mood as for fairly obvious reasons this is an awful and depressing Time .

However I did it for DC as they had seen a poster suggesting it and it was nice for them to play in the front garden , chat with neighbors across fences ( far more than 2metres ) but basically I saw no one breaking any lockdown rules at all

My guess is people who broke lockdown are the type that have been doing that anyway .

Wannabangbang · 09/05/2020 10:36

And i agree this is the press spouting untruths and lies

GingerBeverage · 09/05/2020 10:37

A 6 week old baby dies with CV and I'm reading 'We're bored of lockdown it's OK to stop social distancing just look after yourself' comments.

For one moment imagine being the mother of that child.

SudokuBook · 09/05/2020 10:39

The government wants people to contract Covid and die?

Yep. They don’t give two shites about people dying. All they were interested in was making sure the NHS capacity wasn’t breached. They’re going for herd immunity. They’re just not telling us.

SudokuBook · 09/05/2020 10:40

And i agree this is the press spouting untruths and lies

Leaked to them by the government

Gawdsake2020 · 09/05/2020 10:41

It’s always been about not overwhelming the NHS it even says that on the daily news briefing every day.

LiveintheNow · 09/05/2020 10:42

This is how we really 'celebrate' veterans - 9 Chelsea pensioners died of covid19

The lockdown was to slow the hospital admission rates so they could cope with the pandemic.

The Government knew...and probably counted upon...some not abiding to the lockdown so that it would continue to spread but in a more controlled manner.

Now the hospitals are beginning to get capacity, the Government need people to start spreading it again... and things like last night serve that purpose.

Eventually herd immunity will be achieved

People die every day of various illnesses and diseases, we don’t shut down society for all of them- of course we aren’t doing this for individual deaths, it’s to not overwhelm the nhs but there comes a point where lock down causes more deaths than the virus.

ticking · 09/05/2020 10:44

The reality is that for the vast majority Covid is no worse than flu*.

The country could "get back to work" and start socialising again provided the vulnerable are quarantined.

For some the death rate is 20-30 times that of flu and we need to start facing facts that those that need to isolate are in certain categories - obese, low vitamin D, over 70, high blood pressure.

It is utterly ridiculous that a 30-something, healthy adult I know is afraid to go to work, and insisting his employer provides full PPE before he ventures into an office that has 4 people in 1000 sq ft of space....

Choctimeout · 09/05/2020 10:45

It was a complete free for all on our street. Started off well but social distancing disappeared out of the window after a few drinks.

We were treated to gangs of people in the road singing loudly, a mobile disco and a pisshead neighbour banging on my living room window trying to shame us for not joining in when he knows damn well I'm shielding.

They were all dancing, hugging and there were even two fist fights!

Can't wait to move.

ticking · 09/05/2020 10:46

I missed my caveat!

  • The overall death rate is 8-9 times that of flu, but that isn't everyone and it's very very skewed into certain parts of the population. Normal under 70, healthy adult = same death rate as flu (from a dutch study)
BetsyJameson · 09/05/2020 10:47

The people who are flouting the rules and thinking they can do what they want will be the ones blaming everyone else when one of their family dies. Whoever thought street parties were acceptable and sensible in the middle of a lockdown need their heads looking at. But it’s ok as long as everyone had fun and the kids slept well. Unbelievable!

Bramblebear92 · 09/05/2020 10:47

I don't agree with people throwing away social distancing for VE Day, but I'm going to assume that people who think children mixing =instant death are not planning on sending their kids back to school. I wonder what they'll do if there's no vaccine. Never let their kids mix again Hmm

ClientQ · 09/05/2020 10:47

The sheltered accommodation near me had a giant party, everyone mingling in a small garden which seemed ridiculous given they're all over 65 and some have nurses/cadets in and out daily. Lots of family visiting too

I get mental health, I've had panic attacks, GAD, depression, CBT, counselling and antidepressants. I'm just a bit.. people that are living with their family, able to go for walks, able to go to the supermarket etc and can't cope still

I've been at home, alone since the 17th March now, no walks, no supermarkets etc, I haven't left the house/garden. It's just what I need to do to keep myself well even if some days are harder than others

ClientQ · 09/05/2020 10:48

Carers. Not cadets Grin

rosiethehen · 09/05/2020 10:48

Some people are like children. They live in the moment, from day to day. They lack the intelligence to see how their actions might impact others or cause problems in the coming weeks. The media has encouraged this juvenile and simplistic thinking over the years, so this is the price we pay for the drunken, chavvy culture this country holds so dear.

mondaynoon · 09/05/2020 10:48

The frustrating thing is that we are not going to be able to end lockdown until the numbers go down. Those people who are not observing the lockdown are just making things worse for everyone. Tack and trace won't work with the numbers we have.

ticking · 09/05/2020 10:49

@MonkeyToesOfDoom what an utterly appalling thing to say.... and also wrong! Normal, healthy kids are no more likely to die than they would from flu.

People at risk are obese, blood pressure, low vitamin d and over 70.

Wehttam · 09/05/2020 10:49

@Bercows Sadly there’s too many sheep. People will collectively abide by the rules until one person starts dipping their toes into the grey areas. Others follow and before you know it, the whole streets out, the tough guys too afraid to look weak will put on the bravado and before you know it the resilience is gone, freedom reclaimed.

Then they get ill. Or pass it on to someone who passes it onto someone who then passes it on to someone who works in a care home.
