The newspapers have changed their tune this morning

Just that really. Headlines now saying lockdown until June. Very different from yesterday’s headlines.

OP posts:
VickyEadieofThigh · 08/05/2020 10:36

The damage has been done. The street is full of cars and families assembling for VE day parties, family reunions going on, and these are neighbours who have been responsible and careful since the start. The message heard by many has been it's all going to end on Monday and families can get back together again, so what's the difference in doing it a few days early?

Too much govt dithering and no grip on the press or attempt to redirect/correct constant misinformation.

Correct. Absolutely shocking irresponsibility by the press and total lack of concern by the government to immediately stem the specupation and minsinformation. We'll get a big spike of deaths in approximately 2 weeks.

Biscuit0110 · 08/05/2020 10:38

I agree the damage is already done, people in the street not social distancing at all saying the 'lockdown is over' when asked to comply to 2m guidance by supermarket staff???!!!!!

The government need to get on the front foot this morning, as of now, or we will see a huge spike again, and an even tighter lockdown will follow.

Jesus christ I am so tired of this, why is it so difficult for the media to behave responsibly, and for the public to understand the consequences? Raab is far too gentle in both tone and delivery yesterday, they should have sent in a bulldog barking out the orders.

SmileEachDay · 08/05/2020 10:40

It should have been Boris, saying “we’ve reviewed, lockdown stays. I’ll announce roadmap on Sunday”

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 08/05/2020 10:41

They have been utterly reckless

friendlycat · 08/05/2020 10:42

I agree the communication is very poor. There should have been a strong communication yesterday saying no change ahead of the sunny Bank Holiday and VE Day. Whilst I agree the message hasn’t changed the ongoing leaks and disagreement within Government is really showing with no clear and strong PR communication.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 08/05/2020 10:44

Headlines to sell newspapers. You only have to listen to the daily briefings journalists questions to see that

cheeseycracker · 08/05/2020 10:45

I'm going to ask one of those questions I'd be too embarrassed to ask anyone in RL because really I should already know the answer Blush

Which one of our newspapers gives unbiased truthful reporting? I want to read news that I'm not second guessing all the time... does one of those even exist?

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/05/2020 10:45

@Cornettoninja

I agree. The reality is that there is very little appetite in a lot of people to examine the source material.

I asked on a schools thread the other day whether anyone had actually listened to the select committee briefing that took place earlier this week where the issue was discussed. No one piped up to say they had.

Lots of the papers seem to be in some sort of self induced crisis of confidence swinging wildly between “lockdown till 2021 - hundreds more dead” and “economic disaster - end lockdown now”.

It does worry me that the government will follow a similar pattern to that which it followed during Brexit where it was very much about feelings and much less about facts. The messaging has been, at best, muddled.

SerendipityJane · 08/05/2020 10:46

The government has been clear and consistent all along!

This is totally true.

For Germany.

Clarity ? From these self serving tossers ? That's a joke. This very thread shows how "clear" the UK government has been.

I'm starting to wonder if some people are getting impatient for their inheritances ....

Michelleoftheresistance · 08/05/2020 10:47

we will see a huge spike again, and an even tighter lockdown will follow.

That's what scares me. Stick with it and ease out gradually and we might get this over with asap. Fuck it up, and we're going to be in far more of a mess for far longer than we have to be.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 08/05/2020 10:47

No cheesey they all have agendas.

Pluckedpencil · 08/05/2020 10:47

The media are fucking irresponsible and feed the public what they want to hear. Media whores.

The government though, are even worse. WHY are they not sending a strong message to stay the duck at home and that nothing will change until that is done. Why are they not chastising people for the lack of public responsibility being shown? Why are they not owning the fucking terrible numbers that show the public are not doing enough to stay at home? Why try and justify shit numbers. Blame people, make people take social responsibility. The government themselves cannot make this go right, but they can urge the public much more openly to not hold street parties with buffets during a fucking pandemic.

Chillipeanuts · 08/05/2020 10:49

Agree. Though surely personal responsibility has to come into it somewhere? Masses of people don’t actually imagine that a virus just conveniently goes away because they want a party?

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/05/2020 10:50

The main issue arose here because Boris had to face Keir Starmer at PMQ’s and KS is very much a details man and Boris is most certainly not. He made a careless comment which wasn’t qualified quickly enough and in the papers desperation to have something, anything, to print about coronavirus they ran away with it.

If BJ had handled that line of questioning better there wouldn’t have been anything to latch on to.

B1rdbra1n · 08/05/2020 10:50

Ways of facilitating people cycling and walking to work
It sounds good but realistically I don't think it's going to be feasible for many people 🤔

Chillipeanuts · 08/05/2020 10:52

B1rdbra1n

I think they must be involving the Ministry of Magic because he also suggested “wider pavements”.
Huh?

friendlycat · 08/05/2020 10:54

Other countries have been far far stronger with their rules and strategy. There is a reason sadly why we have the highest death rates within Europe.

SmileEachDay · 08/05/2020 10:56

Which one of our newspapers gives unbiased truthful reporting? I want to read news that I'm not second guessing all the time... does one of those even exist?

None of them really - I think there are some individual reporters who try their best, but in reality, papers have an agenda. That said, some are worse then others. I think the Times and the Telegraph have been especially shit during the pandemic.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 08/05/2020 10:56

The headlines the other day were dreadful and just shows how much utter bollocks some of them spout,
I think the government have been really clear in what's going to happen, but then again I've been watching the actual news update thingies at 5pm on an evening.
No wonder people are getting confused, they shouldn't speculate so much and make their own shit up.

Itisasecret · 08/05/2020 10:57

The fault lies with Boris and the government. Boris flapping around at PMQ’s and panicked, saying he will get going with lifting restrictions from Monday. That led to the press field day we had. He was pandering to the press and they took full advantage. It needed an explicitly clear and firm message yesterday. It’s too late now, in a few weeks we will be back to square one.

B1rdbra1n · 08/05/2020 10:58

Wider pavements😳
Pavements are for pedestrians, pedestrians and cyclists do not mix well, there is no mutually acceptable compromise but for safety reasons cyclists have to defer to pedestrians which means it's going to take a long time to get to work because you can't get up to a reasonable cycling speed for long.
Of course cyclist can use the road but this puts the cyclist in jeopardy, bicycles and cars are also mutually incompatible in my view.
if we want people to cycle we have to make proper provision for them

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 08/05/2020 10:59

The press want this lifted asap because the lack of advertising revenue and low sales has had a huge impact on their profits.

Our local rag (( owned by the daily mail group or whatever it's called )) is struggling massively and is on the verge of collapse.

luckylavender · 08/05/2020 11:01

The government needs to up its game and communicate properly. Stop the waffle and take control.

RoosterPie · 08/05/2020 11:02

Exactly.

Have you seen the state of the kerbside road in most towns and cities ?
