We all need to be getting back to work or our jobs and livelihoods are going to disappear.

The divisiveness is getting tiresome. This is supposed to be a country pulling together to get through a crisis

Yes... employees turning against each other - 'furlough scroungers', 'wfh slackers', 'I'm still in the office picking up three people's work'. Many of the same comments have been made by the self-employed while they wait to get some help - the retaliation is 'Well you were earning loads of money/fiddling your tax - you should have saved for this'. People who who were on benefits before Covid who say 'Welcime to my world' are being told 'But this is different' by people who don't see why they should have to use their savings to live.

I'm not suggesting that dividing people even further was the driving force behind the government's 'solutions' but I'm willing to bet they see it as a beneficial side effect.

I can’t believe the amount of mumsnetters that think we can live like this until a vaccine is found.

I think it’s more they wish to live like this for as long as possible.

I think the government also understands that, some folks are enjoying the state help, or the ability to work from home a bit too much.

It’s fine to say, ok that’s was a great couple of months, I stayed home, got paid for it, either didn’t work or did a bit, lost the commute and the expenses, It’s so far from ok to scream it needs to continue, to pray for rhe schools to stay off, pretend it’s fear, so you can milk it as long as possible.

And let’s face it there is a lot of that going on. No one, but no one, without additional substantial learning needs, doesn’t understand this can’t go on.

Welcome to phase 2 people. Time to get back to work.

Its really bizarre. Its not even that we 'can' with some people, its that we should, and apparently should all also want that else we are heartless bastards who don't care if people die?!

Mind, IRL it seems the only ones happy to carry on with lockdown indefinitely are those who have fooled themselves into thinking furlough can continue indefinitely also, and are quite selfish (not all furloughed people..big difference). Very very much 'this is quite a decent time for me, it should continue and everyone else should agree with me' dressed up as 'omg, people are dying in droves, we need to stay in!!!'. Which in turn winds those who actually are quite scared up even more. Lockdown cheerleaders seem to be almost all those enjoying the current situation as its a break for them. Meanwhile, oddly, it seems among those I know, the ones most wanting lockdown to end are those in the shielded group who wish to see family and say they will 'take the risk' as soon as they are able. I sort of think that with those I know, everything seems the opposite of how you would expect...young fit healthy low risk people all wanting lockdown continuing. Older, ill people who would prob get it worse than others and are high risk mainly want it ended. Of those in the shielding group who are terrified too, they seem to still want lockdown eased for the sake of their families/economy, and say that they are willing to stay in for longer of course but they don't see why others should have to. Which makes total sense really. I have found the 'I am high risk but its not fair to expect me to stay in while others go out. Any young fit healthy person who wants a bit of life back is just being selfish!' and such to be a purely MN phenomenon luckily.

I thought he just meant as more people went back to work furlough would obviously be removed for these people.
Then, I'm sure that businesses who are furloughing staff will be given a cut off date to get staff back in or make redundancies, to coincide with that sector returning.

pearl24 · 06/05/2020 19:26

It definitely needs to be scaled down - whether it's to 60% or just for businesses forced to remain closed. I am furloughed at the moment and it's worrying, but we need to get back to normality.

Alex50 · 06/05/2020 19:35

@MarrowWang yes it is bizarre, it makes it sounds like we are all murderers for even suggesting lockdown has to end at some point. We are all just money grabbing bastards who should learn to live within our means and make our money go a lot further so it last for another 18 months Hmm
