So it doesn’t look like the lockdown is going to be extended does it?

Just caught the daily news briefing. Despite a lot of people on here last week thinking there’s no way they’ll be easing the lockdown before the end of May (and I admit, I too thought this!) it looks like BoJo may announce relaxations of the lockdown Sunday, possibly taking effect as of Monday?

I am a bit confused though as though the majority of the criteria for relaxation looks like it’s being met, there are still 4000 new infections each day, which is the pretty much the same amount as at the start of this pandemic so surely that’s still too high?

China had a stricter lockdown and have lied about numbers.

Nicola maybe having adult conversations but the people shouldn't have the decision re friends or economy the relaxation should be based on the impact to the R figure, not what people fancy...

Legoandloldolls · 05/05/2020 22:34

Who knows? It has to end one day surely.

I'm already thinking about what I need to do and what things I'm going to change.

I'm going to really re think my finances that's for sure.

Plus if the kids need to back to school they are going to need to open somewhere to try shoes on. Either that or my dd will be going in with boots on.

It's going to require some planning to go back to normal unless it all happens at once

GabsAlot · 05/05/2020 22:34

dont agree op even chris witty i think said dont thik we're just going to come out of it quickly (maybe wrong on who said it)

i think thursday will be announcment of exteniosn sunday boris will give dates of lifting in phases

GabsAlot · 05/05/2020 22:38

china has put another city in lockdown and tbh i dont belive a word theyve said about their numbers

TheClitterati · 05/05/2020 22:43

I can really only focus on one day at a time. The future with the corona is so unknown & there's nothing I can do about it.

So one day at a time.

ssd · 05/05/2020 22:44

@Anniesnotmydaddy you've done great if you've stuck to it this long. I have too. Don't let that dick persuade you to do anything else. He's a feckless idiot.

blue25 · 05/05/2020 22:46

Expecting another 3 week extension. Hearing rural areas will be brought out of lockdown before towns and cities.

Springcatkin · 05/05/2020 22:46

We do not have the highest death rate in Europe if you look at deaths per 1000 of population - that is actually Belgium.
I went shopping today and all shops (B&M / Aldi / M&S / Tesco) had no queues which was unheard of last time I went 10 days ago. I still think most people are sticking to it.
I don't think it will end yet either tho

Karcheer · 05/05/2020 22:47

@Springcatkin i really wish they'd use that stat more, it's the most accurate and telling.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 05/05/2020 22:48

It's a fucking lottery. A friend from Brighton has just died of it in 3 days.. 51 years old.

I don't play the lottery. I'll stay home . Kids are bored rigid but their parents are still alive.

FliesandPies · 05/05/2020 22:53

This is such a failure of leadership. Why is everyone being left to speculate and worry about what might be announced? Either they've got some change to announce, in which case do it now, or they haven't in which case tell people that it's going to be extended.

frasersmummy · 05/05/2020 23:01

@FliesandPies I agree. Last week NS was full of how we were coming out of lockdown, what that would look like and now she has back. Pedalled completely.

That really upset me..

nettie434 · 05/05/2020 23:01

I think there will be some let up announced on Sunday. What is happening now is that there are clear regional differences. It would not be unreasonable to have different dates for an end to lockdown. When it first started, most cases were in London and there were fewer in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. I think a phased end would work better as it could then be reimposed if infections started to rise again.

PhilCornwall1 · 05/05/2020 23:04

A genuine question for people that say "there is hardship, but the lockdown must continue".

Do you not have jobs that you worry about keeping hold of? Yes you could be on furlough, but that won't last. The thing is, you could come out the other side of this with your job, only to either be made redundant or the company go bust, because there will be a recession because of this and you can guarantee restructures in organisations, company failures, etc. Getting a job during a recession is problematic to say the least, especially as certain sectors are really going to suffer.

Will you be thinking it was all worth it then if you are struggling to make ends meet.

OneandTwenty · 05/05/2020 23:10

what lockdown? Roads are busy, most of the shops are reopening here, restaurants and cafes are doing take-away and home deliveries, even the ice cream vans are working again.

PhilCornwall1 I'd rather worry about my job than worry about my kid having their leg amputated because gangrene set in during treatment, or their lungs or kidneys being dramatically damaged and them having life-changing consequences. It's not just about "surviving" the damn thing, people are so focused about death they forget what happens to patients who make it. Some patients at least.

Not mentioning the many cases of people reinfected who are apparently weaker and obviously more at risk then. Interesting testimonies from doctors overseas.

So frankly, my company going bust? I can cope and it's the least of my worries.

FliesandPies · 05/05/2020 23:12

*frasersmummy it makes lockdown so much harder to cope with. We need clear messages but they are constantly washing back and forth and far too many voices giving their advice, often conflicting. Lockdown is fizzling out in my area as people are sick of being cut off and we are constantly told that CV incidence in the county is very low.

What is happening now is that there are clear regional differences. It would not be unreasonable to have different dates for an end to lockdown

That would seem the most sensible way to go nettie but that's another example of failure of leadership - they won't do it because 'we're all in this together'

FedHimtoTigers1990 · 05/05/2020 23:12

I'm in Scotland too and NS seemed pretty adamant another 3 weeks of lockdown here.

What a total shitshow this whole thing has been so far. The first Covid19 death in the UK was end of January and BJ locks down approx 7 weeks later...its an absolute scandal.

I really cant see the end is sight. Feel like I'm going crazy.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 05/05/2020 23:13

@PhilCornwall1
*A genuine question for people that say "there is hardship, but the lockdown must continue".

Yes dh and I have jobs, but a question for you which option would you choose?
Keep your job and your home but loose your vulnerable partner to Covid19.
Or loose your job , your home end up on benefits in temporary accommodation but with your partner right there with you?

I am sure you would think it was worth it as you struggled to make ends meet.

bananaskinsnomnom · 05/05/2020 23:17

Maybe I’m naive but I think the majority are still playing by the rules.

All our local supermarkets are still limiting capacity. There’s someone on the door each time I’ve been. I’ve seen people sitting in their own front gardens having a drink talking to neighbours also in their gardens. I’m still seeing people stopping at the garden fence and chatting to people at their front doors rather than going in. My town has huge fields at the park and these are still empty - families yes but spread apart, walking or cycling, no picnics or games or anything and still nowhere near the volume you would normally see. I walk past the train station to get to the supermarket and have not seen a single person in there each time.

I am aware though that is you give people an inch, many will take a mile. And there lies the problem

OhTheRoses · 05/05/2020 23:18

FedHimToTigers do ypu genuinely belueve people would have compliedcwith lockdown iin mid to late January? There would have been a riot.

Whatsmyname26 · 05/05/2020 23:18

I actually might loose my mind if the lockdown carries on much longer and I can’t imagine I’m alone. I totally agree with it and we need to protect the vulnerable but I am reaching my limit for my own mental ability to deal with it. That said I’m pretty sure they will extend it for another 3 weeks but hopefully with more details on how we will start to come out of it.

PhilCornwall1 · 05/05/2020 23:20

@AldiAisleOfCrap

  • but a question for you which option would you choose? Keep your job and your home but loose your vulnerable partner to Covid19. *

As someone who should be shielding as I'm high risk, I'm choosing keep my job and home. As soon as I can get in the office, I'm gone. There is only so much of my job I can do from home.

I spoken to my wife about this and her stance is, if you are happy to do that, it's ok with me, I'll support you on that.

JemimaShore · 05/05/2020 23:20

I've just read another thread on here saying the exact opposite! By a mum despairing over childcare of her 3yr old, saying from what the daily briefing today said, she's expecting to do this till September.

I don't think all the speculation helps at all tbh, but fwiw, I'm in favour of continuing the lockdown for now, because if we come out too soon, and infections and deaths rise again, it'll have all been for nothing. We'll have screwed the economy, and still have a rapidly spreading pandemic on our hands.

Jayaywhynot · 05/05/2020 23:21

Yeah lift lockdown as its unbearable then we can have a 2nd wave and even more people can die 🙄

FedHimtoTigers1990 · 05/05/2020 23:22

@OhTheRoses not necessarily after 1 death but 7 weeks to actively do anything? He watched what was happening in other countries too and still did nothing. Even 1 week earlier could have saved hundreds of deaths.
