Head teacher visiting all the children

Head teacher has announced on the school website that he is coming to visit all the children in their homes this week. We're not shielding but DH and I, ds3, ds4 and ds5 are on the vulnerable list. Ds5 really doesn't get social distancing (he has autism and global development delay) and will probably try and hug the head teacher given half a chance.

I'm quite worried about this, I really don't think it's safe for the head teacher to go and visit all the children. I don't think this is optional though.

That's crazy. How is this essential?

Eh?!! Is this for real? You sure he's not just going to stand on the pavement and have a chat? It seems very peculiar. I wouldn't be so keen on this either!

Maybe email the school and express your concern? I imagine the HT is just going to stand a suitable distance from the door, so there shouldn't be a significant risk, but you know best how your ds is likely to react.

I presume it's a safeguarding thing - they just want to check that all of the kids are alright.

Don’t open the door. He can talk to you through a window. If he tries to say he wants to enter your home, tell him that you don’t want to break the government regulations that state households cannot mix. That sounds better than, what the actual fuck do you mean, you want to come in?

But before you do that, send an email and ask what exactly he means by visit and point out that he will not be able to enter your home, die to the regulations.

Just say no thanks or say go away through the letter box.

My dd's headteacher spent the best part of five years avoiding me I can't imagine him darkening my doorstep.

I’m sure your head teacher has good intentions but it’s not really appropriate.

It has to be optional, also batshit crazy. Any parent that lets him over the door is as bad as him

I really worry about a lot of SLTs. They were not in any way chosen for their skills in infection control.

How big is your school? We haven’t had any contact from school. Regardless no I wouldn’t be accepting anyone who had been visiting other people’s houses unless it was essential.

I do think vulnerable children need to be seen . Vulnerable child on our street ended up in care before returning home and now has to go to school.

Any home visits should be done with social distancing and safeguarding in place.

Staff would normally visit in pairs and stand well back. They might ask if the child could come to the door but would not be going inside. If there was a real concern for a child's safety, the staff would call the appropriate services.

Is it a particularly small school? There is no way our Head would have the time or the energy to visit every single child. Contact tends to be by phone for most families.

I honestly can’t believe that you have put this on here. Just email him and say you won’t be accepting the visit so don’t bother coming around . How is it not optional it’s up to you who you let into your house regardless of current situation.

220 children in the school. He might just stand in the garden and have a chat (access to our house is from the street, through neighbour's drive and into our garden) but I would really rather he didn't, especially without warning as the dc might be in the garden. ds5 doesn't go in the garden unsupervised but ds3 does. He is normally good with social distancing with people he doesn't know but he might forget or think it's ok to go up to an adult he knows. A couple of mums from the school have said he just turned up and knocked at the door and asked to see the children.

Just to be clear, we aren't social care type of vulnerable. DS3 and I have asthma, dh has diabetes and ds4 and ds5 have learning difficulties.

Remember that even police can't enter your house without permission unless they have a warrant! A headteacher most definitely can't visit against all government advice (common sense!) and without your permission.

Write a rather ...'did you mean to be so daft and dangerous' email.

Forgot to add, class teachers are phoning every week as well, which is absolutely fine with me as there is no infection risk with that.
