How Many Dead Bodies Haven't They Found Yet?

MysticMeghan · 03/05/2020 22:48

We hear all the time about people not wanting to "bother the NHS" because their symptoms are quite mild and we've all been told to wait it out at home and only spend 3 hours on hold to 111 if we are turning blue from lack of oxygen.

Seeing as we've all been self isolating for best part of 7 weeks and no-one's been round, it occurred to me that stories of European Care Homes full of dead bodies because all the staff are ill or have scarpered may not be the half of it. How many single people or entire families might have perished and no-one knows?

I know this sounds like a bad horror movie but not everyone has relatives skyping them every day to make sure they're ok.

28,446 may not be the half of it....

egg you get food boxes that are very generous delivered every week completely free of charge, you are on a priority list with the supermarkets because the government coordinated the list to ensure you were high priority. Your prescriptions are high priority and are now sent to you. The NHS volunteer system is brand new of course it will have glitches.

  1. I can’t eat the food boxes as they are not vegetarian.
  2. My prescriptions are neither high priority nor delivered.

I am glad your relative’s experience has been different.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/05/2020 07:51

Blue we have flour and even some yeast on our local shop, can I get you any, sweetie?

And to those who have dragged politics into this can I say the neighbourly support in our village has nothing to do with political parties.
It’s to do with care and compassion for our fellow human beings.
So before you complain about “ them “ not doing their bit make sure YOU are doing yours.
( rant over xx)

AJPTaylor · 04/05/2020 07:53

For the love of god.
Hopefully fewer people than normal
Vulnerable are shielding. Most are on lists. My dmum who is a hermit at the best of times is getting calls every day or two from the local group to check on her (I call her daily)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/05/2020 07:53

1. I can’t eat the food boxes as they are not vegetarian. They can be. Try contacting them again

2. My prescriptions are neither high priority nor delivered. They can be, you need to contact your local COVID response group.

Unofficial channels are often more responsive at the moment.

This is the link to the situation that evolved in Europe:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-52014023

The Spanish army found lots of dead bodies in abandoned care homes. That is the one thing you won't find happening here. If that ever happened here there would be outrage for sure. I am sure many in Spain have been asking a few hard questions about the care of the elderly.

EvilPea · 04/05/2020 07:55

I do know of one sheltered accommodation for vulnerable residents that the staff have gone. A note on the door that’s it.
It’s been left to visitors who see the note to sort shopping etc. Which has obviously increased the risk as people are in and out more, plus there will be some without relatives and ones physically close enough.

There has been outrage for sure in Spain.

poshme · 04/05/2020 08:01

@BlueBrian you keep saying 'the government boxes'
They're being organised by local councils. Not central government.

RoLaren · 04/05/2020 08:02

We hear our very elderly neighbour's phone ring at 9pm on the dot each evening. We call it her 'I'm not dead!' call. She always sounds pretty abrupt with the caller.

poshme · 04/05/2020 08:03

I don't understand this: 'I can't eat the food boxes they're not vegetarian'

So pasta? Tomatoes? Beans? Biscuits? Tea?
Why can't you eat those things?

Tappering · 04/05/2020 08:06

This thread title definitely wins the needlessly graphic and frightening stakes today. Given how many people are already frightened, it feels needlessly provocative. If it's motivated by a genuine desire to ask people to check on elderly neighbours and relatives then why not post about that in the title?

TheGreatWave · 04/05/2020 08:06

I am not sure why people are so determined to deny that people sadly die alone and lie undiscovered for a period of time. Not everyone lives in communities where there are others willing and able to check on them.

Egghead68 · 04/05/2020 08:08

Poshme The box provides enough calories and nutrients for one week provided you eat everything in the box, including the meat and fish. If you don’t eat meat and fish your nutritional needs will not be met.

cantdothisnow1 · 04/05/2020 08:09

But Egghead you are also receiving a priority delivery slot so presumably you are not, in fact, starving?

Doingitaloneandproud · 04/05/2020 08:09

Brilliant post!

Biscuit0110 · 04/05/2020 08:18

Quire staggering that people feel the need to make up scare stories before we have even had them!

As if we haven't enough to contend with Confused

Bollss · 04/05/2020 08:19

Nobody is saying it does happen. I'm sure it does but I don't think there is going to be hundreds of thousands of people who have died alone and aren't found for weeks.

Here (can't speak for anywhere else) there is more provision than normal for the vulnerable to be helped and checked on. I'd be surprised if we've lost half of our elderly population without noticing.

As I said upthread our council are now using a 100 and odd bed hotel as a temp care home for those who are usually supported at home and now can't be for whatever reason. I assume other areas have plans in place. We are not in an affluent area either.

You can find your local Covid Mutual Aid group here

RickOShay · 04/05/2020 08:23

@Derbygerbil
Thank you for your post. I do believe the Tories do not care about people’s lives. I hope what you say is true, because I can’t shake this nagging feeling that the government is ‘allowing’ lockdown infringements to ensure herd immunity by stealth.
I don’t trust them. I honestly don’t think they are honourable. But I don’t want to think like this. Here’s to hoping you are right.

Egghead68 · 04/05/2020 08:25

But Egghead you are also receiving a priority delivery slot so presumably you are not, in fact, starving?

I am now OK for most things (was not in the first few weeks) thanks to supermarket deliveries and help from volunteers I have found myself.

However official (government/NHS volunteer) support for me has been completely lacking. I am glad to hear that others have had better experiences but these are not universal.

ludicrouslemons · 04/05/2020 08:31

I'm with @bluebrian on this.

Leaving people at home to die unnoticed is just a concentrated form of the same cruelty they've been practicing for a decade with austerity. It's social cleansing and they hope no one notices. Bang on.

BlueBrian · 04/05/2020 08:39

@poshme Not what my local council told me last week, they said they are organised by central government.
