How Many Dead Bodies Haven't They Found Yet?

MysticMeghan · 03/05/2020 22:48

We hear all the time about people not wanting to "bother the NHS" because their symptoms are quite mild and we've all been told to wait it out at home and only spend 3 hours on hold to 111 if we are turning blue from lack of oxygen.

Seeing as we've all been self isolating for best part of 7 weeks and no-one's been round, it occurred to me that stories of European Care Homes full of dead bodies because all the staff are ill or have scarpered may not be the half of it. How many single people or entire families might have perished and no-one knows?

I know this sounds like a bad horror movie but not everyone has relatives skyping them every day to make sure they're ok.

28,446 may not be the half of it....

blue How rude! That is my experience! I don't even vote for the bloody tories. Some people hate to hear about anything positive. You can't censor our experience with your political agenda thanks very much. Confused

BlueBrian · 04/05/2020 07:20

You experience doesn't seem to match reality for many.
Government food parcels should come with a health warning

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/05/2020 07:21

That story about carers 'scarpering' and leaving elderly people to die was a lie, by the way.

In one care home they had a number of deaths so all staff and residents were evacuated and the home left for a couple of days before the ambulances, mortuary the went in. It was an attempt at minimising the danger of infection.

SnuggyBuggy · 04/05/2020 07:24

It wouldn't surprise me at all. The lockdown has made loads of people more vulnerable

Egghead68 · 04/05/2020 07:31

Can I also say some of our high risk and shielding family members have been amazed at the incredible food boxes that arrive for them every week, completely free of charge, and covers the whole family not just the shielded person, they are also called a few times a week to see how they are managing and if they need anything.
They also have a contact number to ring if there are concerned. They have been updated and looked after exceptionally well.

I’m pleased to hear this worked for your family members. As a shielding person the only official help I’ve been offered is food boxes, which I can’t use as I am vegetarian and they only cater for meat-eaters. When I’ve called the council to ask for help with picking up medication or taking down rubbish from my flat I was told to find a neighbour to do it. When I registered as needing help from the NHS volunteers scheme no one ever got back to me.

feelingverylazytoday · 04/05/2020 07:31

Not many.
People that are socially isolated are unlikely to catch the virus in the first place. How do you think they would become infected if they're not in contact with anyone? The virus isn't going to waft through an open window.
Secondly, there are monitoring systems in place . My daughter is a vulnerable adult and we've had monitoring calls from social services, and emergency contact numbers if we need help.
The way some people talk you would think it was like The stand with piles of dead bodies everywhere. It really isn't.
Typical mumsnet shite.

blue You are the only one with the political agenda here! You obv nothing of value to add apart from peddling propaganda. Some of us have real life experiences that we can share, additionally some of us are actually quietly impressed with the way CoVid has been handled, shock horror.

egg have you called them back? It was much busier at the start of all of this, and not so coordinated but now it seems to be running much more smoothly. I am a veggie too, are you on the vulnerable high priority list for the supermarkets? You can get deliveries every week for anything that isn't in the box. Give the meat to neighbours, I am sure they will be grateful if they are helping with the bins.

BlueBrian · 04/05/2020 07:39

Last week in my area none of government food parcels turned up, no word why, just silence, loads of vulnerable people were left with nothing to eat, the food banks had to rush around trying to sort out food for people.

There's a really disturbing film about a woman who was dead in her flat for around three years before her body was found... The TV was still on. The film was called Dreams of a Life and it was made by channel 4 I seem to remember. Very sobering and reminds you to check up on people.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/05/2020 07:40

I am vegetarian and they only cater for meat-eaters. Egg, call them back. Next door had to wait a while but they have been getting vegetarian boxes for a while now.

And do you have a Covid response facebook group locally? They coordinate all sorts of every day stuff for people who can't / won't leave the house.

Biscuit0110 · 04/05/2020 07:42

Mostly my cousin is just abit sad to receive a letter this week to confirm that another three months will be needed in isolation. She has a young sick child and has been advised to keep her indoors at all times, not even to use the garden, so that was the hardest thing for her.

She receives regular calls from SS every week, and her school, the GP has also been in contact. So many neighbours have offered help. She can't eat all of the food there is so much in the box, it has been pretty great overall.

Egghead68 · 04/05/2020 07:42

Biscuit0110 I have called and contacted the council and NHS vols several times to no avail. I am on the extremely vulnerable/shielding list.

I do indeed get priority slots at the supermarket now which is fine, and I advertised myself on Facebook for someone to pick up meds etc which they have kindly done. Official support though = zilch.

Derbygerbil · 04/05/2020 07:42

@BlueBrian

Get your facts straight... First you write food parcels aren’t turning up, the next you link to something that say they are, but that the food isn’t particularly healthy.

You do realise that support for the vulnerable is provided by local councils, not central Government, and that many of these are Labour! Councils might be concerned about money moving forwards - who isn’t - but none have said they are doing all they can to support the vulnerable at this present time.

It’s one thing to dislike, despise even, the Tories. It’s quite another to have such pathological hatred that you concoct or believe stories of their evil intent worthy of the most insane conspiracy theories. Seriously, to think the even the Tories would say (presumably cackling into their sleeves with villainous intent) “let’s ensure as many people as possible die alone with Covid with no one knowing, to rot for months, so that the deaths stats won’t look quite so bad (at least until summer when they’ll all be found due to the smell).” is Madness Hmm

blue Really Blue? Where is that exactly? I don't believe it for one minute. There is no way people will be left without their food boxes.

milveycrohn · 04/05/2020 07:43

If you are a single person ( not necessarily elderly) who lives on their own without any friends, or neighbours who would notice their absence, then this could apply.
Less likely to apply to a family with different generations.
Most people, even those living on their own, have friends and family, who they remain in contact with by telephone.

I live alone since being recently widowed.
I have given my neighbour a key and asked her to message me on days she hasn’t heard me in the garden
I don’t worry for myself but worry that if I am very ill or dead my 2 dogs would starve.
When I walk my dogs I wave to several elderly people who sit in their windows. If they weren’t there one morning I would take some action.
Our village are really pulling together and I hope this caring will continue long after Coronavirus

egg you get food boxes that are very generous delivered every week completely free of charge, you are on a priority list with the supermarkets because the government coordinated the list to ensure you were high priority. Your prescriptions are high priority and are now sent to you. The NHS volunteer system is brand new of course it will have glitches.

Your expectations are phenomenal. You do know this was all set up in less than six weeks!! And yet you are still complaining.

Some people are never happy. Whatever they do, it is never enough. Be grateful you live in a country with completely free health care, free food delivered to your house, and people that care enough to set up facebook pages to help you!!!!!!! Confused

BlueBrian · 04/05/2020 07:48

Looks like the government shills have started to turn up, probably just taking a break from writing their nonsense in the Telegraph.

Biscuit0110 · 04/05/2020 07:49

blue have you got some bins to put out lovely?

Bollss · 04/05/2020 07:51

Our council have turned an empty hotel into a care home for the elderly and vulnerable who might not have the same support as they did pre lockdown. So I would assume, in my area, not very many.
