Sorry it’s behind a paywall.

Just heard about this on the radio. They are suggesting that Johnson will address the country next Sunday (10/5) with the roadmap, part of which will be primary schools returning on 1 June.

Not saying I believe it, just sharing the link.

There will I suspect be multiple threads on this tomorrow repeating the lies that children get covid 19 far less than adults and saying that school staff and parents will be at zero risk. Probably calling parents like me an idiot for saying we would not send our kids back then even if schools do open.

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 01:44

It's perfectly clear why I've posted what I have - my son was due to take A levels in June - the A levels have been cancelled - my son will now have his A levels determined by his teachers. Apparently.

If the schools go back in June - when his exams would've been taken - I'll be pissed off. Because my son would've had the chance to prove himself in the proper exams, as all the past years do - Is that really so difficult to understand?

PeachOrchid27 · 03/05/2020 01:45

I’ll wait for an announcement but am assuming and hoping for after the half term. Probably not full time though.

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 01:48

You'll have the pleasure of reporting my post Jemima. Enjoy. I''m posting about an 18 yr old son being denied his chances in his A levels - so enjoy! I'm sure it'll be fun reporting a distraught mother of an 18 yr old wanting to go to Uni next next year! Go for it! It'll make you feel good I'm sure.

Neveranynamesleft · 03/05/2020 01:52

It's perfectly clear to understand . How you feel about it all wont make a jot of difference. You're not the only one in this position.

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 01:58

My DCs schools are shut. Would you like to contradict me?

They have sent emails saying so. They are not open, not even for key workers dc - they have sent emails telling us so. They don't have the staff.

cantory · 03/05/2020 01:58

@neveranynamesleft That is not very sympathetic

cantory · 03/05/2020 02:02

As I said my relatives in Scotland have said their schools are not opening again till after the summer holidays.

Neveranynamesleft · 03/05/2020 02:02

Why do I have to be sympathetic. Flushedzebra said schools are shut which would imply all schools everywhere are shut. That is not the case, some are still open.
This is really getting ridiculous. All because if something in The Telegraph Confused

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 02:07

Schools are shut, Never - have you missed all the people having to educate their children from home? Dd you miss the govt closing the schools?

Jenasaurus · 03/05/2020 02:08

For the PP who said they would want to know how many teachers had died before sending their DC back to school, I googled and saw individual case but this article from NYC says 21 from that area, I suppose thats a small percentage but its still too many

www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/21-nyc-teachers-have-died-of-coronavirus-doe-says/ar-BB12Dq6W

Jenasaurus · 03/05/2020 02:12

is says in total 50 have died from the department of education, 21 teachers and a mix of other roles within education, NYC have been one of the hardest hit areas by this pandemic though. They also said that not all had been confirmed as Covid, but reading the article about the 36 year old teacher that died, it seems very likely

Neveranynamesleft · 03/05/2020 02:13

flushedzebra did you miss the bit about some schools being open for key workers

InglouriousBasterd · 03/05/2020 02:14

I thought it was interesting that Matt Hancock dodged the question of fines for parents who kept kids off last week. I can’t see how they can ethically or logistically enforce fines for concerned parents.

cantory · 03/05/2020 02:18

He dodged because I agree, there is no way they will fine parents. They would just have lots of DM stories about parents with cancer who have kept kids at home and been fined.

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 02:18

www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2020/mar/18/uk-coronavirus-live-boris-johnson-pmqs-cbi-urges-government-pay-businesses-directly-saying-350bn-loangrant-package-not-enough

I'm not a key worker. And schools are closed, except for key workers. I wonder if you're aware that not all schools are even open for key workers? My DC's schools are not even open for them. I wonder if you're even aware of that? They don't have the staff. They've sent letters telling us that.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/05/2020 02:23

@ToffeeYoghurt I think it was you who said the Barclay brothers live in Guernsey. They don't. They live in a small private island off the coast of Sark. Guernsey is not a Covid safe haven either with 19 deaths (which is a small number but the population is only 67,000).

Neveranynamesleft · 03/05/2020 02:26

We know you keep telling us. I'm going.

ToffeeYoghurt · 03/05/2020 02:30

Apologies for my mistake. I thought it was Guernsey. Sorry to hear of your death rate too. It's easy to forget population size when reading only numbers of deaths. Are things improving there? I hope so.

A private island certainly sounds like a Covid haven.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 03/05/2020 02:54

I won’t be sending my year 6 child to school if they open in June. It’s just not safe and I’m not willing to take a risk with my child’s life even if this government is. I’d say 80% of parents I know feel the same.

LaProfesora · 03/05/2020 03:07

@Fantasisa

And screw the teachers, right?

Bringonspring · 03/05/2020 07:09

Let’s hope so

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/05/2020 07:14

I hope they are, I must admit. My 6yo is suffering at home. He's an only child and fed up with having no one his own age to play with. Also I need to get back to work, I can't work while school is shut.

ritzbiscuits · 03/05/2020 07:23

@Waxonwaxoff0 With you in solidarity. My 6yo son is an only child too. He's really struggling now, can't concentrate on schoolwork and has become very moody and argumentative. We bumped into a school friend on a walk on Friday and I realised he hadn't spoken to another child for over a month.

The situation is unsustainable for both our mental health. My DH and I have talked and if the schools open in a few weeks, he'll be going. I understand this is not an easy situation for those with underlying conditions in the family.
