Sorry it’s behind a paywall.

Just heard about this on the radio. They are suggesting that Johnson will address the country next Sunday (10/5) with the roadmap, part of which will be primary schools returning on 1 June.

Not saying I believe it, just sharing the link.

But if we don't know by September? A relative of mine teaches in Asia where schools have been shut since end Jan. They still don't have these answers.

cantory · 03/05/2020 00:42

@Fantasisa Headlines in newspaper articles are rarely accurate. This is the important quote.

Professor Russell Viner, president of the RCPCH, told the Daily Telegraph: "From around the world, we are not seeing evidence that children are involved in spreading or transmitting the virus, but we do not have enough evidence."

There needs to be more research.

Daffodil101 · 03/05/2020 00:43

How can they possibly say that no child has transmitted covid to an adult? How can they possibly know?

Keepdistance · 03/05/2020 00:44

Even if kids were 1/3 as likely to transmit. 30x1/3 is 10. Plus 2 adults.
All in a small room. All mixing together. And with siblings.

Obviously on here you dont see circumstances so could be those kee n to go back are in tiny schools where there are 0 cases.
Or in london an d they thin k there is herd immunity.
s
By sept i agree it could be th e same but. What if there is a vax. Or treatment or if they discover kids are permanently harmed oradults prone to heart attacks or clots or something.
almost all other countries are working to protect as many citizens as possible.
Ours just throws people under the bus. (Including the most highly trained - drs, and now teachers).
It's stupidity as who will tell their kid to be a dr or teacher better to be a banker or mp and wfh!
Really there was no poin t in identifying the vulnerable group as they get no support and just awareness they are more likely to die but still obviously going to work and kids to school.

ToffeeYoghurt · 03/05/2020 00:46

@ilovesooty agree but they failed to consider that if not enough people cared for action to be taken pre pandemic (when two women a week were killed by DV) their emotive faux concern wouldn't work the way they hoped. They could also do something to help abuse victims if they so wished without ending lockdown early. They could start by funding more online access to support. We also have many empty holiday homes and hotels at the moment.

LilyPond2 · 03/05/2020 00:46

www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses
WHO says children and adolescents just as likely to get Covid-19 as other age groups and can spread the disease.

cantory · 03/05/2020 00:46

@AnnieAnt We are in the 6th richest country. Other rich countries are affected and doing research. That has already highlighted issues like covid toes, I had heard nothing about this from other countries.
September is actually a long time away.

Fantasisa · 03/05/2020 00:46

Of COURSE more research is needed. There will be years and years of research based on Covid 19 and lessons to be learnt. But the risk to children and from children needs to be kept in perspective based on the current knowledge.

cantory · 03/05/2020 00:47

@ToffeeYoghurt I agree. 60% of women were turned away from refuges last year. Few cared.

Ilovemayo · 03/05/2020 00:48

@ Fantasisa So it’s ok to throw school staff under the bus then. Collateral damage

cantory · 03/05/2020 00:49

@Fantasisa If you were a pregnant teacher would you be happy to be in a crowded classroom on the basis of more research is needed as to whether you are at risk from the children?
Maybe you would? I wouldn't. I would want to know what the transmission rate is. It is not believable that children do not transmit at all.

AnnieAnt · 03/05/2020 00:50

Down to everyone to decide as suits their own circumstances. But I still don't think things will be materially different come September. We'll have been home for 11 weeks come early June and I would be comfortable with my children returning then. I am unsure exactly how safety can be guaranteed in September.

cantory · 03/05/2020 00:50

@Daffodil101 They can't.

ilovesooty · 03/05/2020 00:51

@ToffeeYoghurt good point.

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 00:51

I sincerely hope NOT!

Why is this being reported in the Telegraph, when no such report has been made by the govt and in their daily reports?

It's a load of crap.

For a start, if the schools were about to go back in June, then why have exams been cancelled? I'll be FURIOUS if schools go back in June but my DS in yr 13 doesn't get to sit his A Levels... ?

Lofari · 03/05/2020 00:51

We are shielding my 4 year old.
If Boris announces schools reopen June 1st I'll be very disappointed, but my older 2 wont be going. Simple as that. Not worth the risk to my youngest.

Fantasisa · 03/05/2020 00:52

Where did I say that, @ilovemayo? Society as a whole has to find a way to operate, this lockdown is temporary and we all have tough times and decisions ahead both in our professional lives and our personal lives.

cantory · 03/05/2020 00:52

@AnnieAnt Why have you been home for 11 weeks? In England schools only closed in mid March.

AnnieAnt · 03/05/2020 00:54

I haven't.

We'll (i.e will have) been home for 11 weeks come early June.

As stated above.

LilyPond2 · 03/05/2020 00:54

Down to everyone to decide as suits their own circumstances
Apart from the school staff who may be ordered back whatever the disastrous consequences for their own circumstances.

Daffodil101 · 03/05/2020 00:55

Flushed zebra

I’m guessing your y13 won’t go back. They dint need to be in school, they are adding to crowding.

They cancelled GCSEs and A levels because there was uncertainty on whether they could go ahead. Because kids were traumatised. Because they’d have no teaching.

The fact they might go back to school in June is fortunate for some and not for others.

AnnieAnt · 03/05/2020 00:55

If it's really unsafe, I imagine the unions will have a say in this?

Daffodil101 · 03/05/2020 00:56

I imagine the unions will have to defer to the scientists who say it’s safe.

It’s their role.

excitedmumtobe87 · 03/05/2020 00:58

Two friends of mine caught it after their child had far milder symptoms.

I doubt any claims that children can’t pass it on at this stage.

We just don’t know.

Theflushedzebra · 03/05/2020 00:58

If the schools go back in in June, I will be asking SERIOUS FUCKING QUESTIONS as to why the A level exams were cancelled. That is all.

My son could have taken his A levels! FFS. I'll be furious. B
