I'll start. Whilst self isolating, someone else shopped for me, in local tesco express. £4.35 for a pack of 2 kitchen roll. Jesus feckin wept.

Then I went to small local shop, was trying to avoid a bigger supermarket.... Paid £3.45 for one pack of andrex wet loo wipes that didn't have the price on them and I needed them.

I'm going to be bankrupt at this state. I'm a very frugal shopper and I don't ever let myself get done. But because of one thing and another I'm avoiding the supermarkets and trying to make things last and only going to local shops seldomly.

Hellish.

Cannot believe some of the prices people are paying. I would rather do without than line the pockets of these profiteering idiots that will just encourage them to do the same again if something similar happens. Although if you are having to purchase organic or luxury because you can't access the much cheapness bog standard version than fair enough.

Kitchen roll? Just buy a pack of cloths for a pound and they are reusable!!

KaptenKrusty · 02/05/2020 17:03

Sounds like you bought 2 very unnecessary things at a stupid price tbh? Kitchen towel? You could just use tea towels - Andres wipes? So ridiculous to think these are things you can’t do without and to pay huge money for

isoblue · 02/05/2020 17:05

Paid £5 for delivery from Wilkinson’s on a £2 bottle of kitchen cleaner. Should have just used washing up liquid but it was looking really manky and I couldn’t get it anywhere!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 02/05/2020 17:12

Some people are taking the piss with prices.

We have a hospital style treatment room in our house for DS's medical equipment, medicines and for all his treatments etc.
I usually stick this with bright colourful accessories like gloves, paper towels, aprons etc. This is to just lighten the mood a bit for DS.
Usually I pay about £4 for 100 pairs of bright orange gloves, £3 for coloured aprons to fit our wall dispenser.
A couple of week ago I logged onto my usual supplier and 100 pairs of bog standard blue gloves were £20 a box I couldn't believe it, aprons were £12 a roll!! I can't image being the sort of person who would take advantage of a bad situation and turn it into a money spinner ... which my DH reminds me is why I would make a shit business owner. 🤷🏻‍♀️

PineappleDanish · 02/05/2020 17:15

I've not seen any of these prices. If my only option was a £15 chicken, I'd just not buy meat. Or I'd get frozen portions, or fish or something.

Unravelingslowly · 02/05/2020 17:15

Why are people buying kitchen rolll...? Just use tea towels

I don’t fancy dabbing the fat off my grilled bacon on my tea towels.

ASDA -everything I buy online (shielding) costs so much more than my usual Aldi shop and the quality of the fruit & veg is appalling.

picklemewalnuts · 02/05/2020 17:18

It bothers me when volunteers do shopping for people at the corner shop, and the items are relatively expensive. No one is taking advantage, just that that is easiest and supports the shop. It worries me that the volunteer group won't be asked again, for fear of these kinds of issues.

UserDeleted · 02/05/2020 17:19

I've just spent £8 on some plastic bendable straws! I used to just pinch a few from McDonalds or wherever. 😭

Not a pandemic price hike, I know, but it still irks!

ZoChan · 02/05/2020 17:27

We didn't stock up with DS dream cream and then lush stopped taking online orders just as the high pollen count started. We looked on eBay and people have listed a £16 pot for £75. Auctions were going for about £45, £20 for smaller pots of out of date cream. Taking absolute advantage of people. We waited and checked lush everyday until they reopened orders. Awful behaviour

safariboot · 02/05/2020 17:28

Cola is the worst for us. We get through a lot, someone's basically addicted to it. Normally we buy own brands, but the 3 item limit has forced us to buy trays of Pepsi Max in order to get more. It's the usual price for the brand but way more than Tesco or Lidl bottles.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen is another, but that's been an issue since the start of the year. I've noticed even the own brand/random brand stuff had jumped from about 35p to 70p a pack recently, and if all there is is Panadol or Nurofen or whatever it can be over 2 quid.

KaptenKrusty · 02/05/2020 17:37

No wonder the planet is fucked with people obsessed with buying single use things like kitchen towel that’s gonna just pile up in landfill because - shudder - they wouldn’t use a tea towel to wipe a bit of bacon fat

You can throw the towel into the wash afterwards - it’s fine ffs!

recycledteenager24 · 02/05/2020 17:39

can't believe people are paying stupid prices for some things,

Mustbetimeforachange · 02/05/2020 17:42

A friend asked of we needed anything from the local Co-op back at the end of March. I asked for honey but she didn't bother as it was £14 Shock

GinnyStrupac · 02/05/2020 17:43

It's not just shops, supermarkets, eBay and Amazon. I saw 2 people being interviewed who are desperately sourcing PPE for the NHS and a care team. One said plastic aprons were £16.50 instead of £2, and the other said they'd paid £60,000 for masks but they had never arrived.

If trying to buy masks or gloves for personal use, please be aware that many fake websites have sprung up.

Herpesfreesince03 · 02/05/2020 17:51

You are both ridiculous and hard work

TSSDNCOP · 02/05/2020 18:04

It's just cost me £3.49 to buy window and glass cleaner on Ocado for DM.

TSSDNCOP · 02/05/2020 18:07

I hope the butchers and veg box farmers keep all this business after lockdown. I know I will be staying with traders that have stayed true on price and offered service above and beyond even thought they are small concerns and must be knackered. There's opportunity here.

planningaheadtoday · 02/05/2020 18:08

£16 for two heads of broccoli a bunch of freshly pulled carrots and some pears and mange tout.
Someone else kindly offered to get my vegetables, but I can fill a big bag for £5 in Tesco so I can't ask them again!

It was an expensive week.

Ratbagratty · 02/05/2020 18:18

Some of these price hikes are not profiteering, but plain and simple supply and demand issues sadly.

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/05/2020 18:27

I agree. The cheap glass cleaner / hand sanitiser sells out and only the expensive one is left.

Not the same thing but I’ve been food shopping for my parents. I’ve been vegetarian for 20 years and haven’t ever really bought meat. Christ that is expensive.

Kingjarvis · 02/05/2020 18:31

Some of these prices are normal though. I buy 10 eggs for £3.70 every week. It’s the normal price. I buy washing up liquid at £3 because that’s the normal price. They aren’t inflated, you just choose to buy the cheaper options

Thirtyrock39 · 02/05/2020 18:34

4 sachets of yeast for £7 on eBay- (would usually cost about 40p) which I bought as was desperate to make bread (have loads of bread flour to use) would not do again!

ssd · 02/05/2020 18:53

And for anyone slagging me about kitchen roll, I like it as you use it and throw it out, I hate using cloths. And I like wet wipes for the loo too.

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 02/05/2020 18:54

Kitchen roll just breaks down no? Like thicker loo roll.

ssd · 02/05/2020 19:02

Yes, unless you want to go crazy and buy the posh blitz stuff I get that for a treat for myself 😁
