Ireland plans for Phased re-opening

The Taoiseach (Irish PM) has announced tonight a 4 phase period for re-opening the country but has said that schools will remain closed until September.
Must admit, I’m happy about the delay as I was worried about how I’d manage DS attending school with his dad cocooning as DH has a blood cancer.
Also, that small social gatherings of friends can begin on 18th May outdoors, providing still maintaining social distancing rules. That’s really lifted my spirits as I’m missing seeing my friends.
Any other Irish mumsnetters on here?
What are your thoughts about tonight’s announcement?

Anna.

They have got a house, yes the big house they wanted (demanded?) and a few ponies aswell. The kids will be fine.

Our PM is a doctor, he has pledged one day a week to do testing. He is not perfect, who is, but in fairness.

And good solid communication is there also. Not perfect by any means but good just the same.

MarDhea · 03/05/2020 20:01

Shalom I agree with you for the most part, though I'd throw in anti-Traveller sentiment as another huge problem. Some things I deal with through work (maybe a bit like you? international measures of poverty, gender inequality, racism, life satisfaction, etc.) place Ireland as well above mid-table in the EU, and I think that context is useful. It lets us see where's better to see what we can copy by way of policy, and where's worse to see what we should avoid.

Anna you're in the same size bubble that I am. I can say that Ireland has social problems that we need to address but they're not exceptional, I've lived in worse places in Western Europe, and it's not all doom and gloom in Ireland. Actually, it's pretty decent for most people, and it should be our job as a nation to see how we can improve things for the vulnerable minority. It's like all you can see is the doom and gloom, though, and want to wallow in it 🤷‍♀️

@Annamaria14 that is her experience and no more. My own ecperience is that I was what counted for diversity in my surrey town. Another middle class educated white person. Everybody was white on my street. Everybody read the guardian. Everybody had a degree. Everbody recycled diligently. No tattoos. No swearing.

THE most stiflingly homogenous place ive ever lived. I am back in Dublin now and it is MUCH more diverse and that is the reality.

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 20:13

Ireland is fine, it looks after people in need. The Social support payments are huge in comparison to UK.

But there are many who play the system, just like anywhere else.

Travellers are not respected much. Because they do not respect anyone else mostly.

Peppafrig · 03/05/2020 20:21

Yes Ireland is such a friendly place where they all look after each other . But until a few years ago rape victims had to travel to the UK to get an abortion. Lovely .

SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 20:22

Yeh we know. 🤔

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 20:24

Peppafrig

Just like NI that is part of UK I suppose, until very very recently.

MarDhea · 03/05/2020 20:24

Yeah, and loads of people campaigned to change it, there was a referendum, and the country overwhelmingly voted to change the constitution to enable legal abortion.

Almost as if most people in Ireland are pro choice 🤔

Peppafrig · 03/05/2020 20:34

Yes NI is part of the uk but I wasn't the one claiming my country was prefect and EVERYONE was so friendly and looks out for each other. I guess the 700,000 who voted against abortion forgot the memo about how caring Irish people are.

7Days · 03/05/2020 20:40

You can only compare like with like.
So Ireland compared to the UK can be valid. But not Ireland/ the UK vs some perfect Utopia that doesn't exist.
Social problems exist everywhere. I dont think ours are too bad - the scale of them i mean. That's not to say it doesn't suck for the individuals impacted.

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 20:42

Oh just get a coffee or whatever you want.

It is what it is now. No one cares anymore, personal choices are what they are, and now, thankfully can be availed of. No one knows about anyone's circumstances and I for one would never judge anyone.

Women first IMO. Their choice can now be taken into account. Long time coming.

Annamaria14 · 03/05/2020 20:45

@MarDhea what about the 80% male government in Ireland
What about rape victims rarely receiving any justice in Ireland.

I have felt alot more respected as a woman in other countries , than In Ireland.

Ireland plans for Phased re-opening
SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 20:53

Ive lived half of my adult life in the uk and half in ireland. Maybe it isnt fair on the uk as it was longer ago, but i have had the opposite experience.

I thought this was a thread about corona virus restrictions

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 21:01

Anna.

Not sure of your agenda, but honestly ROI is doing ok now. Isn't it?

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 21:07

SliAnCroix

Absolutely agree with you. Thanks.

But in fairness I did respond to posters outside of this.

ROI is doing OK, well at least the communication is good fwiw,. and we have been given a pathway.

SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 21:12

Yes I agree. We are doing ok.

I guess in a way, that might be difficult for a minority in the UK who dont have much in the way of personal identity or strong sense of self, and who put a lot of store in to being British and all that that entailed historically not counting for anything in today's world.....

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2020 21:18

@OhMargo we don't need perfect, we need decent. I'll take a mix of him and Jacinda

Annamaria14 · 03/05/2020 21:24

@OhMargo
No ireland is not doing ok. We still have an 80% male government, and all of my female friends and female family here have been raped. My aunt was raped at age 12.

I have no agenda. I am Irish and I hated being treated like dirt, just for being a woma in ireland.

I was working abroad, and had come back to visit Ireland just before lockdown. And I have become stuck in Ireland much longer than I wanted to be.

Now I am back, and I feel the disrespect towards women everywhere again. My mother just rang me and was telling me about a retirement group that she was in before lockdown, where a man talked about raping the women there, how awful it made her feel.

I hate being stuck here. I hate the disrespect towards women in this country

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 21:29

SleepingStandingUp

Just wondered who is the "him" you mentioned.

Jacinda is down on the bottom of the earth but good on her just the same. Easier down there than here it seems.

Peppafrig · 03/05/2020 21:32

@Annamaria14 I'm so sorry you are stuck somewhere that makes you feel like that. I hope you get out and get back to where you want to go soon.

SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 21:33

Im sorry for you @Annamaria14 . These are bad experiences but they arent representitive. I a lot of sexual disrespect in the uk, but i am one person, i was young and it was longer ago, so cant present any conclusive report.

OhMargo · 03/05/2020 21:35

Anna.

Sorry for your troubles, but you will not get much traction with what you are saying/shouting. ALL of your friends have been raped? Come on.

You probably resent being back home. Nothing to do with women's rights but probably more to do with being cooped up with those parents you profess to love so much from abroad.

MondayTuesdayWednesday · 03/05/2020 21:40

@Annamaria14 I don’t know what part of Ireland you come from but that is not normal Irish life. Women are respected and hold high profile roles, are independent and live fulfilled lives. Ireland has a lot of room to improve with regard to women in senior roles but inroads are being made there.

Someone at a retirement group talking about raping the other attendees is not normal and that would usually be dealt with very severely.

I can honestly say that your opinion of women in Ireland would not be widely shared by Irish women.
