How have the daily deaths dropped so suddenly?

I'm no expert on anything, so if you can explain it simply then I won't be offended! They just seem to have dropped suddenly and (fingers crossed) that's now for a second day?

How have the daily deaths dropped so suddenly?

The numbers on the chart are incorrect.
Over 600 deaths yesterday and over 700 today.

The chart you are using covers deaths reported on each day. There were a couple of days where quite a lot of old data was added as the system caught up. The graphs on this site are more meaningful: www.cebm.net/covid-19/covid-19-death-data-in-england-update-1st-may/

Yes but today’s and yesterday’s figures include hospital AND community

Priori to yesterday the figures we’re also 7-900 but didn’t include community -they were hospital alone - so if you’d have have added community they’d have been maybe by 11-1300 so obviously new figures represent a huge drop!

There is quite a considerable drop in daily deaths. The problem is that prior to yesterday (I think?), the daily death number was only hospital deaths.

The figure now includes deaths in other settings e.g. care homes.

When it was just hospital deaths, we were at one stage seeing numbers of 700+. Now, hopsital only deaths is circa 430. The 700+ is the total number of all settings, which would probably have given figures of well over a thousand if they had been included at the worst stage.

Of course, any death is tragic but thankfully, the figures do seem to be decreasing.

Could it also be that the people who are presenting to hospital now have a lower viral load? I work in a hospital in south Wales and there are quite a few empty beds now, and a&e gone quiet. While there are patients with confirmed covid19, they arent as sick as the people coming in a few weeks ago. 3 or 4 weeks ago they were having to incubate patients on the wards before they went to itu because they were deteriorating so quickly. On Tuesday night when I checked the system there were at least 15 beds empty out of 38 in itu

GreyishDays · 02/05/2020 08:42

I don’t think that’s right @daisymay133

I think they’ve retrospectively added the community deaths from previous days.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/05/2020 08:47

Can I just add, they are the deaths recorded on that day. Not occurring on that day.
There is a chart somewhere showing deaths on the day they happened and you can see it is actually falling.
Prior to this there has always been a fluctuation in data reporting so you were advised to take a 7 day average.
Before other deaths were added the average was falling by about 100 a week.
Of course that average will be skewed for a while as now deaths in all settings are added.

And daisymay previous to all settings being added the few days before were not 700 to 900 they were between 583 to 813 with the majority being under 650.
