How have the daily deaths dropped so suddenly?

I'm no expert on anything, so if you can explain it simply then I won't be offended! They just seem to have dropped suddenly and (fingers crossed) that's now for a second day?

How have the daily deaths dropped so suddenly?

There have been some corrections applied over the last few days and the last of the additional ONS data was applied yesterday. I would assume that made a difference.

Next week's data should be more clear, unless they are pressured to add yet more data streams.

sleepwhenidie · 01/05/2020 16:27

The deaths outside hospital numbers will most likely be incomplete, you can see that it looks like there are no deaths outside hospital on the weekend, which obviously isn’t correct, most of those come through on mon/tues (which is why those days look strangely higher than weds/thurs/fri). Focus on the rolling average line to see a more accurate picture.

Redlocks28 · 01/05/2020 16:28

Good chart-I like that.

PeachOrchid27 · 01/05/2020 17:52

@Emcont

Where is that graph from?

PeachOrchid27 · 01/05/2020 17:54

The TV just said 739 deaths today 🤷🏼‍♀️

Chienloup · 01/05/2020 17:55

That chart's incorrect, that's how.
Today's total is 739, and yesterday's was 674.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 01/05/2020 17:58

That graph is not correct is it? Deaths announced today are 739 giving a total of 27,510.

JulietTango · 01/05/2020 18:05

If you follow dhsc on Twitter it will also tell you what the daily figure would be in hospitals only

Laniakea · 01/05/2020 18:12

that graph is the data for NHS England only - so not incorrect but not the whole UK

scarbados · 01/05/2020 18:23

I'm not sure how more new cases reported and more deaths than yesterday is a drop in figures. WTF is that graph about?

According to the worldometer figures, we're in a worse place today than yesterday and worse yesterday than the day before. Drawing a red line going downwards superimposed on the actual figures shows nothing. They could taper it down to zero and we'd still be getting worse.

JulietTango · 01/05/2020 18:43

If you look at hospital only deaths (how they used to be reported) today's figure is 438.

Cases will go up quite a lot in the next couple of weeks because they're testing more people.

There have always been lots of people with covid it's just that we now know about them

Oakmaiden · 01/05/2020 18:49

Is that deaths announced or actual deaths?

Thelittleweasel · 01/05/2020 18:57

@Emcont

On average there are about 500000 deaths every year in England and Wales. That is about 1400 every day. What I cannot get my head around is how many Covid deaths are "extra". Every one is one too many of course but how much duplication is there?

To some degree of course the numbers now seem to be falling away which is excellent. You can see why perhaps. We have not associated with one other single person who might give us the virus since the lockdown started. I do hope that people will realise that we have got to continue. I believe they predicted 12 weeks and I imagine it will be all of that

MillicentMartha · 01/05/2020 19:20

Have you seen the graphs of ‘excess deaths?’ That is the deaths more than expected. They show the situation more clearly. This graph is lagging by a week or so.

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/882399/Weekly_all_cause_mortality_surveillance_week_18_2020_report.pdf

JulietTango · 01/05/2020 19:34

It'll be interesting to see that graph at the end of the year to see whether it drops off to below normal

Thisdressneedspockets · 01/05/2020 19:38

Daily hospital deaths England are here.
Only some of the reported deaths happened in the last 24 hours. They reported 25 deaths from march in today's numbers, for example
www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-daily-deaths/

Some days apart much higher as they are catching up for weekends. You've got to imagine them shared out a bit over low days.

FuckThisWind · 01/05/2020 19:41

They haven't. 739 deaths today is not a significant drop. If they expand testing as they are trying to, then the Govt may now decide to start expressing that as a %.
It's a total bloody sham!

MillicentMartha · 01/05/2020 19:45

Also, today’s 100,000 tests were tests registered for, not tests taken.

JulietTango · 01/05/2020 19:53

In all fairness they tested over 72,000 people which is a vast improvement on the 5,000 on lockdown day

redtickreturn · 01/05/2020 19:57

At my testing place in my hospital they have loads of capacity but not anywhere near as many people that need testing than what they thought. So I do think that testing capacity is fair and it's good that they don't actually need to use all of it.

QuentinWinters · 01/05/2020 19:59

Its lockdown. The virus can't spread. It takes 2-3 weeks from infection to death, and also time for the amount of new infections to decrease through reduced contact.

It's what the scientists were expecting I think.

PineappleDanish · 01/05/2020 20:02

That chart is all over the place given the increased testing and constant tweaking to how the figures are calculated.

I find the "people in hospital" or "people in ICU" charts show a much easier to read pattern.

daisymay133 · 01/05/2020 20:09

It’s a big drop when you consider half are community

Figures now for hospital and community are similar to those which were hospital only last week

Parker231 · 01/05/2020 20:21

Over 700 COVID deaths reported today with the U.K. heading towards having the highest number of deaths in Europe.

daisymay133 · 01/05/2020 21:00

The 700 deaths tho inc 430 or something hospital deaths

Previously hospital only deaths have been 7-900 so that’s a huge drop
