Question on schools reopening

ruby2019missyou · 01/05/2020 13:51

I know that Downing street are meant to be announcing a plan next week for schools re-opening. I was wondering when they were planning for this to happen and if they were planning for all year groups to return at once or a phased return. Just speculating obviously. What does everyone else think?

PheasantPlucker1 · 01/05/2020 13:53

Our school is assuming a phased return, but Im not sure that will be workable.

No one really has a clue, its all speculation!

Odyc · 01/05/2020 13:54

I think it will be a phased return. I think they will need to have social distancing at school.

Littlefish · 01/05/2020 13:54

There are many, many threads discussing this question. The answer is that absolutely nobody knows and it is completely pointless to speculate.

CaryStoppins · 01/05/2020 13:56

Total guess at the moment but my guess would be year 12, 10 & 6 as a priority then maybe early years for childcare reasons.

Bol87 · 01/05/2020 13:58

You’d imagine it’ll either be June (after the half term at the end of May) or September. Although possibly if September, they’ll do some re-opening in maybe August to do some transition work for new starters..

It’s been suggested it’ll be something along the lines of part time but how that works in reality with ‘getting the economy back on its feet’ remains to be seen. People can’t physically go back to work if schools aren’t open full time..?!

I know my daughters nursery is preparing for June although I suspect more in hope than anything. No idea how social distancing works with 1/2/3 year olds Confused

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/05/2020 13:59

Could you really not have found even one of the other threads discussing this already?

Anyway, my Magic 8 Ball says: "Very doubtful"

The link is here to ask yourself...

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 01/05/2020 14:01

Until the government have announced the plan, nobody knows.

All your get on here in peoples (normally completely wrong) opinion and we have many threads on this already If you wish to read them

IScreamForIceCreams · 01/05/2020 14:02

Here in NL it depends on the a school - our primary goes back 3x mornings a week (8.30 - 13:00) from 11th May: class split in half, so grp A goed Mon Wed Fri, Grp B goed Tue, Thu. On non-school days: homework. No longer home-tutoring as kids are i education again. Secondary schools remain shut.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 01/05/2020 14:03

I'm not expecting my kids (years 1 and 4) to go back much before September. Possibly some sort of tokenistic return in July for a few weeks just so its not such a big long gap. But this school year is pretty much lost I think.

Puddlesplasher · 01/05/2020 14:14

They have said it is likely to be a phased return and they have also said that they will give schools at least three weeks' notice. Even if they announce next week that schools will be returning then with the three weeks' notice and bank holidays the very earliest they will return will be June 1st.

Letseatgrandma · 01/05/2020 14:16

Nobody knows.

MinkowskisButterfly · 01/05/2020 14:22

Well NI said prior to schools shutting it would be 16 weeks as a minimum, Scotland I believe also said similar. Not sure whether Wales said anything. I suspect they won't be back this side of summer holidays.

Nixen · 01/05/2020 14:22

These threads are pointless.
How is some random on mumsnet going to know something the government haven’t decided or announced?
I can make some shite up for you and lie and say I’m Carrie Symonds if that helps?

ruby2019missyou · 01/05/2020 14:23

@Littlefish and @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross I'm baffled as to why you commented on this post at all ...

To everyone else: Thanks. I'm glad to read your musings on the subject. I wonder why they said no matter what, the summer holiday wouldn't be used by schools at all. I would have thought it as good a time as any to catch up.

OP posts:
Deelish75 · 01/05/2020 14:23

My DC's school have said we won't be returning until they have had clear guidance on social distancing.

I also want to know how it will work if there is a vulnerable parent at home, how do we keep them safe?

ruby2019missyou · 01/05/2020 14:25

@CloudsCanLookLikeSheep I think it is pretty much lost too. Who would have predicted it?

OP posts:
Pinkflipflop85 · 01/05/2020 14:25

Schools won't be used in the summer because they can't afford to pay us.

@Pinkflipflop85 I know that it's in a teacher's contract to have several months of holiday a year but these are extraordinary circumstances.

OP posts:
Headbangersandmash · 01/05/2020 14:27

OP- teachers and TAs aren't paid for holidays so the government would have to offer more money. Plus there's the added complication of people having booked summer holidays and tourism needs the revenue and insurers aren't going to refund because schools change their opening hours.

Letseatgrandma · 01/05/2020 14:27

I would have thought it as good a time as any to catch up

Do you really think the government would have been able to afford to pay schools staff to work across the summer?!

zafferana · 01/05/2020 14:27

Anyway, my Magic 8 Ball says: "Very doubtful"

The link is here to ask yourself...

I asked it 'Will schools reopen this term and it replied 'it is decidedly so'

So there you go folks. The Magic 8 ball has spoken. Schools WILL reopen this term. You heard it here first ...

ruby2019missyou · 01/05/2020 14:27

@Deelish75 I wondered the same thing as I also have a vulnerable parent at home.

OP posts:
BuffaloCauliflower · 01/05/2020 14:28

The schools in Surrey have been asked to submit what their plans for a reopening will be (close friend is a Head) so it’s unlikely to be some national level plan, each school will likely do something different.

Schools have been told they won’t need to work through the summer holidays, they will go ahead. So that option can be removed.

Nixen · 01/05/2020 14:29

@ruby2019missyou ask a stupid question and you’ll get a stupid answer Biscuit
