How will large schools cope?

The school issue is worrying. Our school has approximately 1800 pupils. Inner city school in a deprived area. Huge percentage of pupils do not have English as a first language which may possibly hinder understanding of the plethora of new rules they will be expected to adhere to. Further, a high percentage of kids with learning disabilities, Ditto the same issue. Also, even if all kids were able to be compliant and carried out all expectations to the letter, who is going to clean the school throughout the day. Particularly high touch areas. It's not possible. I don't see how it will be safe.

Then if we go with the untested theory that kids don't spread it. In a school of our size there's a lot of adult staff members. Still plenty of opportunities to spread the virus.

Opinions please.

All the staff at my school who are not deemed at risk need to say what their potential availability is. The trouble is like many others I am a lone parent so my availability would depend on my DDs school re-opening and those who are not lone parents' availability would depend on their partners' work schedule. So the available staff at the moment is going to be a tiny number. But they need to know how many staff are available so they know how many pupils they can have each day - it's such a massive task.

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 11:29

Teachers kids will continue to be provided for like currently

Poppi89 · 03/05/2020 11:48

I'm not a teacher and my DDs school only have a certain amount of spaces available at the moment which are reserved for people like teachers, NHS, shop workers (I don't want to say more important)

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 11:49

Teachers kids will continue to be provided for like currently

I love the way people up and down this thread keep making these bold statements based on nothing but their own confidence in their own judgement. I don't know if it is a blessing to be so sure of your own ideas or curse to have such lack of imagination.

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:11

Or it could be that I just watched the news? Not official but the heads up never are but it did say that

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 12:17

People are saying all sorts of things. How would teacher's children be provided for in schools where children where otherwise split in to half days? Would they attend the same class twice with two sets of children? How would they then not become a vector between one set of school children and the other?

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:21

News currently saying all primary kids and certain secondary

Secondary kids (majority) can be left alone so actually there’s minimal childcare issue with this proposal

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 12:23

So, the entirety of the primary school population, full-time and all at once, with no regard for social distancing?

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:25

Yes because the science they’ll say proves it’s low risk. Not my words but I’m watching w lot of news and it’s a common theme and usually these leaks happen first

There talk of already reducing the social distance 2m

Even scrapping it

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 12:25

Or do you mean the entirety of the key worker's children would have access to full time education and the rest would be staggered?

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:26

Worth remembering that there are currently many people in work who can’t social distance it’s an advisory

I think they’ll scrap it to get economy going on basis of science being updated

Because people are fed up of lockdown they’ll take it as positive in most cases

Not my option just what I can see happening

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2020 12:26

There talk of already reducing the social distance 2m

And there was talk about making a list of 10 friends you could see. And talk about schools going back on May 11th.

Talk doesn’t mean action.

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:27

No the suggestion all morning on news is all primary together as young children lower risk and don’t transmit apparently as much

Then y10,yr12 and so on

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:27

Maybe not noble but most other updates were leaked prior to event

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 12:27

I guess we'll see. I don't think that will happen but I could be wrong.

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:28

This school update has been on sky and bbc all morning

May not be true but I’m guessing it is

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2020 12:28

Daisy loads of shit has been written, some of it has come about. That means we should take what has been written less seriously, not more seriously.

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:32

To be honest most of the big stuff, lockdown, social distancing updates etc have all been right

The whit week date has been on the cards for ages

BelleSausage · 03/05/2020 12:32

@oldbagface

You could not be more wrong. And I’ll tell you why.

Social distancing is to prevent a second wave of infections and force us al into lockdown again. The economy would not survive that.

Low and slow is the way. I would expect to be on part opening for all industries until a vaccine is available.

Any company not enforcing social distancing should be fined. Ditto any company not providing good sick leave to encourage those who are ill to stay at home.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 12:33

Lockdown was right because all of the alternatives were up in the air at the same time. One of them had to be right.

BelleSausage · 03/05/2020 12:33

Sorry @oldbagface that was actually meant for @daisymay133. Stupid phone.

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2020 12:34

The whit week date has been on the cards for ages

Which just shows how stupid it is because that’s half term.

The ‘Whit week date’ was deliberately designed to put ‘schools back in May’ into people’s minds. What the papers were really angling for was 11th May.

Poppi89 · 03/05/2020 12:34

That is one of the major issues - most schools are thinking, as PPs have said a year group per day, half days for certain year groups etc.

But teachers need childcare so their school will have to work around the days their DC are in their school or vice versa.
Or it will mean that all teacher's children will be full-time so they can work full-time but then that will be a place taken from someone else as you can only have a certain amount of pupils in at one time.

I think that is the reason they are asking staff availability so they can see how many people are dependant on childcare or other caring duties.

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:37

Nothing can return to normal without reducing the social distancing rule and let’s face it, if they start saying you can go to work and not social distance then you can go see friends and family!

People underestimate how many jobs can actually social distance - not many. Construction, anything with parcels, shop warehouses, teaching, hospitals, police, prison, transport, salons, vets dentists etc

That’s a hell of a lot of the workforce that can’t start with these rules

They will relax them

daisymay133 · 03/05/2020 12:38

If they want work back they’ll put schools back

It won’t work without both together

They’ll offer temp checks at door like they are doing in prisons and get rid of the distancing
