Travellers returning to UK to quarantine for two weeks

I read today that the UK requires returning travellers to quarantine at home for two weeks and authorities can check your at your registered address and fine you etc.

Would you interpret this to mean you must go back to your primary residence eg. Electoral role?

For context, me and DP live together but between my flat in London and his place in the South West. My flat is small and my room itself absolutely tiny, think double bed and virtually nothing else. Living space, kitchen and bathroom is shared with flatmate who is working flat out in NHS doing trachs etc.

DPs house is more roomy but two lodgers (couple) one working (builder), one furloughed. Shared living space, bathroom and kitchen also.

Neither me or DP working ATM as we've been traveling.

Not really sure what we should do...perhaps a hotel although they seem to all be shut!

just get another job

Lol not exactly easy on a tourist visa!

To those saying stay longer we keep flip flopping on this! We're in a really fortunate position here, staying in the middle or nowhere by the sea where there's no Covid for hardly any money. But the British High Comission keeps sending everyone these dire but not very helpful posts saying we're all to come home immediately. Also I'm still paying rent on my room so the longer we stay the broker I'll be. But on the other hand we aren't going to be able to sell our camper and some of the sports stuff that we can't take home until the restrictions lift a bit here anyway! Argh...so confusing

I rather hope UK doesn't bring this idea in. 5 days to visit my dad = 3 week off work. Would be stressful.

I'll take your already horrid 3 weeks ...and raise you 5.

My family live in NZ, which would mean 2 weeks quarantine at both ends. To spend 1 week with them I would have to do two weeks quarantine in NZ then another 2 weeks when back home in the UK again. Barely feasible as it is, with a child, that just won't be feasible at all. I'll need an immunity passport or vaccine. 😢

PicsInRed · 27/04/2020 07:27

And NZ quarantine is in a govt facility ...so no quarantine with family.

A pal of mine has been in 14 quarantine at the Novotel at Auckland Airport. Not quite Christmas Island. ;-)

It doesn't look fun though. The NZ government is paying for it all.

One of our 16 clusters was the result of a flight attendant who went to a wedding and led to 90+ infections. So I think it is worth it.

OP - have you checked out what the Aussies have done about extending visa's? I know NZ has given automatic extensions to some visa classes. You might be able to get a working holiday visa.

Mine does expire for a few mo this yet, thankfully. DP has a bridging visa. I'm not sure if I could get a working one now - the official advice is for tourists to go home and judging from the group's on Facebook casual work for backpackers is really hard to get at the moment. There's quite an anti-traveller feeling in general here at the moment. Sad

that is crap, PicsinRed.

I realise belatedly that my step-mom would also insist on me being Q'd for 2 weeks in California before she;d see me, anyway (!) So basically, I won't see those rellies in person before they've been vaccinated. Sucks.

Novotel Auck Airport is nice - wouldnt want to be locked in there for 2 weeks though - more so with a small child. Lockdown in my own nice house, with daily walks, has been wretched enough! 😂 They'd have to pay for it at $250 or so a night but knowing my luck I'd end up in one of the dives on the airport periphery. 😂😂

Yep, it sure does suck doesn't it!

OP- There is call for people to work on farms picking fruit/veg etc here- to the point they have flown in multiple plane loads from Romanias to minimally fill the gap. I realise this may not be a first choice, but its something to consider if you will be living at your OH's property rurally till you visa expires.

Is there any work in Aus till you return to the UK?

notimagain · 27/04/2020 12:28

Was he/she NZ based? If so do you think the attendant should have gone into quarantine or do you think they should have avoided the wedding?

I wouldn't mind fruit picking, I've done it before a very, very long time ago. But as I said I don't have a work visa and I joined a few of the backpackers fruitpicking Facebook groups just to scope it out and there are literally hundreds and hundreds of young people desperate for picking work for their visa. Not many farms are taking people and the regional travel restrictions make it even harder. Tbh I had planned to go traveling so have some savings (admittedly I didn't factor in DPs contract being lost and the industry I work in collapsing so I likely won't get a job for a LONG time!) so money isn't super desperate, but DP has put a lot of money into the camper. When he bought it in November the dealer said he would buy it back when we left but he's since, understandably, said he can't do that any more. We're in the middle of nowhere so unlikely to be able to sell it until restrictions lift a bit.

OP, sorry, I misunderstood when you said this: Mine does expire for a few mo this yet, thankfully I thought you meant you HAVE a work visa, but it expires soon.

Turangawaewae · 28/04/2020 04:47

The attendant worked for Air NZ so probably was NZ based. They were following the guidelines at the time which meant they didn't have to quarantine. I'm not sure how an airline could operate if all their staff had to do this after each international flight. It is clear now that some social occasions lead to more transmission than others.

I don't think people are holding anyone responsible. We didn't know then, what we know now. It's what we do next that matters.

notimagain · 28/04/2020 08:08

Turangawaewae

Thanks for the extra info..

You're absolutely right - Even before lockdown started in the UK I was already hearing of colleagues getting grief at the school gates for doing drop offs/pick ups having done night stops in "exotic places".

I do think some in the UK actually would expect crew to go into quarantine after every shift...as you say it would be totally unworkable - the airline wouldn't just be short of passengers it would be out of crew..

turnandfacethenamechange · 28/04/2020 13:40

Sorry that was my sloppy typing after a few drinks! I'm on a tourist visa which expires in August.

This doesn’t surprise me - when I flew back from Madrid on the 15th of March there were no checks on anyone and from the discussions I heard it was pretty clear no one was going to selfquarentine coming from one of the most infected countries. We did because I could already see how quickly it would spread.
