Travellers returning to UK to quarantine for two weeks

turnandfacethenamechange · 26/04/2020 18:16

I read today that the UK requires returning travellers to quarantine at home for two weeks and authorities can check your at your registered address and fine you etc.

Would you interpret this to mean you must go back to your primary residence eg. Electoral role?

For context, me and DP live together but between my flat in London and his place in the South West. My flat is small and my room itself absolutely tiny, think double bed and virtually nothing else. Living space, kitchen and bathroom is shared with flatmate who is working flat out in NHS doing trachs etc.

DPs house is more roomy but two lodgers (couple) one working (builder), one furloughed. Shared living space, bathroom and kitchen also.

Neither me or DP working ATM as we've been traveling.

Not really sure what we should do...perhaps a hotel although they seem to all be shut!

How will you travel ‘home’

If pubic transport you should go to the nearest place.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 26/04/2020 18:21

I imagine what they are saying is when you land you will have to complete a form saying your “registered address”. So that may be a hotel, house etc. You go there and stay there for 2 weeks.

turnandfacethenamechange · 26/04/2020 18:24

Haven't worked that out yet either. We have A LOT of bulky gear so public transport not an option. DPs van is on a friend's drive near the airport so we can probably work out a no contact drop off if we ask nicely.

I'm confused- you are currently abroad and will be returning to the UK soon? Or you have already returned back? Were you told to isolate for 14 days? I too would think its the address you give on the landing card, so they can trace if needed.

A friend & her BF arrived back from Australia last week. They had no checks at Heathrow and were not advised to self isolate for 14 days at all. She was surprised by lack of any advise or checks and has already returned to work- frontline NHS.

Ilikefresias · 26/04/2020 18:31

Is this from a reliable source? I ask this because in my area we have just had several coach loads of farm workers from Romania (legally) and they are not quarantining, in fact they are a nightmare in our local shops. Going in in groups and not socially distancing at all

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 26/04/2020 18:34

This is a new directive. You cant quarantine with lodgers

turnandfacethenamechange · 26/04/2020 18:35

Sorry yes we're still in Aus, not sure of return date yet.

They had no checks at Heathrow and were not advised to self isolate for 14 days at all

Yes I saw similar stories but it seems today it changed. Not sure what the options are but would be good if there were a way of keeping people safe and also avoiding spunking nearly three months rent on a fortnight in an airport hotel.

Maybe wild camping?? clutches at straws

If you listen to the dail yupdates they will tell you ( as they do the jounalists most days ) why health checks at airports are pointless

turnandfacethenamechange · 26/04/2020 18:53

Some websites seem to say you can use kitchen/bathroom when others aren't there if you clean everything afterwards. Not sure how that would work in practice.

Lovelydovey · 26/04/2020 18:55

I would go to your place and then move it with the lodgers after quarantine is up. Seems silly to expose others more than you need to.

notimagain · 26/04/2020 18:58

Can somebody please point me in the direction of this new directive that is being talked about...

AFAIK despite rumours earlier today nothing changed today regarding UK arrivals but I may have missed the announcement.

Elouera · 26/04/2020 19:02

Any advise now might clearly have changed by the time you do actually fly back!

Am I correct that both the options of where to stay only have 1 bathroom, shared by a lodger couple at 1, and a flat mate at the other? (not sure what the difference is with lodgers vs flatmate though?)

Will you both be working when back or WFH/staying in? If communting, which property is the quickest to get to/from work? Which place is easier to get to from the airport (taxi/public transport)?

woodencoffeetable · 26/04/2020 19:06

do you have a link?

turnandfacethenamechange · 26/04/2020 19:09

We're both not working at the moment. I quit my job when before we left and DP lost his remote contract due to Covid.

DPs place in West country has more than one bathroom so we could allocate and have shifts in the kitchen I suppose. I'm just wondering what happens if we get stopped on the way back down west since it's not my address, only DPs.

Re. Lodgers/housemate, no difference really except it's DPs house and they're his lodgers, it's not actually "my" flat I rent my room.

I can't find the original thing I saw now, it was on my Facebook. The telegraph says it's not come into force yet:

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/04/25/two-weeks-quarantine-travelling-uk/

Is anyone a subscriber? I can only see a little bit of the article - does it mention anything that might be useful?

OP posts:
notimagain · 26/04/2020 19:17

Thanks for the link...

So according to the Telegraph it's a plan..not yet active.., it "could" be rolled out as early as next month...

We will see.....

turnandfacethenamechange · 26/04/2020 19:23

I know! I'm doing hypothetical fretting - pointless I suppose. It's 2am and all my brain wants to do is worry worry worry. Sad We're likely not leaving til end of May (for a whole host of practical reasons) so it may all have changed again by then.

OP posts:
Ilikefresias · 26/04/2020 21:04

Do you think you will be flying at the end of May? I thought travel was suspended for now?

DBML · 26/04/2020 21:09

It’s not a directive yet.
It was a question posed by the media that the government failed to answer.

FlabberMcBlasted · 26/04/2020 21:09

I wouldn’t return to this hell hole. Aus seems like they have far more of a grip on things. I’d just emigrate starting from now TBH.

notimagain · 26/04/2020 21:41

I thought travel was suspended for now?

Nope, not really.

There are certainly a very limited number of short haul passenger flights running across the UK and Europe - there have been throughout the "crisis"- but you can't travel unless you have an essential reason for the journey ( usually essential worker, repatriation, that sort of thing) and can also comply with any national entry requirements at the arrivals end.

End result - not many passengers so not many flights..but they do operate.

buttermilkwaffles · 26/04/2020 21:43

Guardian article only says that it's an option which is being considered.

"Health checks and quarantine restrictions for passengers arriving at airports have also been implemented by many other countries.

Confirming the government is now considering such measures, Raab insisted that medical advice had previously suggested this would not be effective while the virus was freely circulating within the UK."

Redolent · 26/04/2020 22:10

Raab’s a tool. It WOULD have been effective before the virus was freely circulating, aka mid Feb when all the skiiers returned.

Ontheblackhill · 26/04/2020 22:37

Jesus, just get another job and stay in Australia if you can. They are not deporting anyone now and you would be so much safer!

lljkk · 26/04/2020 22:59

I rather hope UK doesn't bring this idea in.
5 days to visit my dad = 3 week off work. Would be stressful.
