What sort of exercise/training are you doing?

Without getting into a debate about leaving the house etc (that’s been done to death) just wondering what others are doing/managing at the moment. Whether you are usually someone who does a lot or none at all, and how that measures up to what you are doing now?

For me, I’m usually a gym goer 2-3 times a week, plus 2 yoga classes. At the gym I do weights and had recently got back into spin class once a week too.

At the moment I’m still doing 2 yoga classes per week via zoom. Not exactly the same but keeping me ticking along. Doing a bit of yoga on my own another 1-2 times a week which I don’t usually manage due to not having the time!

I have been doing PE with Joe Wickes (and DS!) about 3 times a week which is not my first choice of activity but it’s something and I feel like I can commit to it. I’ve done a bit of resistance training from home but nothing consistent as I don’t really have much kit.

I’m also going out for walks at least once per day, some days twice. At least a mile each time, longer at weekends.

Aim to not lose too much fitness or conditioning whilst the gym/yoga studio are closed and not gain too much weight. Plus ‘keeping fit’ is a huge part of how I maintain my mental health even though in the current situation it’s a battle between not always feeling like doing anything but knowing I’ll feel better afterwards.

I used to go to the gym twice a week for BodyPump, 2 x running club and 2 x solo running. I'm now just solo running and by some miracle managing to keep my mileage up. Can't motivate myself to do on-line gym classes though but really need to.

user1494055864 · 25/04/2020 21:42

I did absolutely zero excersise before. I have always been naturally slim, and a size 10.
I easily put on weight the first couple of weeks, just from not going out to work, so now I am trying to walk or cycle most days. I found I was getting really bad constipation the first few weeks, which I read on Google could be caused by inactivity.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 26/04/2020 10:32

I'm now wfh so am missing the 6 miles a day I usually walk. I've been doing a daily 2 mile walk, plus HIIT and weights workouts every day, with some pilates (I'm subscribed to Physio Pilates).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/04/2020 10:38

I'm doing nothing at the moment. I did the Joe Wicks PE sessions twice but there was too much jumping up and down and it made my acid reflux worse.

I do need to do something and I was looking at Les Mills. Does anyone know if I need weights or are there workouts I can do without? I don't want to buy any to gather dust when I get bored!

NurseJaques · 26/04/2020 10:42

I was sprint triathlon training, so 3 swims and 2 running club sessions a week, plus 12 mile daily cycle commute and a longer cycle at weekends. And parkrun.

Now I'm cycling to work and doing a couple of 5k runs a week. Really missing swimming which is odd because I usually find it a chore!

jewel1968 · 26/04/2020 10:47

Normally swim an hour a few times a week. I have an eleptical (cross trainer) at home and use it every day for 30 - 40 mins. Do a few weights too. I play high tempo music and climb on.

SausageCrush · 26/04/2020 10:51

Usually swim twice a week (a mile each time), gym once and walk three times a week.
Now just walking every day. Really missing my swimming Sad

MrsFezziwig · 26/04/2020 10:59

Have literally just taken delivery of a barbell so that I can do Body Pump tonight- this is good as I’m really missing using weights.

@PatchworkElmer where did you get your barbell set? I can’t find anywhere online that is not sold out!

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 26/04/2020 11:01

@PatchworkElmer @MrsFezziwig I was coming on to ask the same thing!

Powerhouse Fitness have some coming into stock mid-May for a decent price but other than that I can't find anything under £500!

jewel1968 · 26/04/2020 11:24

There is something about swimming isn't there. It's not just the exercise. I always feel so zen after a swim. My eleptical is good and I can certainly work up a sweat but I don't get that zen feeling. I suspect swimming pools and gyms will be one of the last to reopen.

Before lockdown: 2x HIIT live classes a week first thing in the morning (6am) which I loved, and run 2-3x total 15-20km, also some yoga on Youtube a few times a week for 15-20 mins. Yoga class every so often, say every other week. I struggle with my weight so my main goal is to do exercise I enjoy and keep the weight down, but I was finding it tough.

In lockdown: 3x HIIT a week live on Zoom at 7pm, the family now eat at 8pm so I can fit it in. I find it massively better to work out in the evening as I need to stop eating by 3pm otherwise I feel sick and faint in the class. The yoga lady is now on Zoom so I'm doing 2 of her classes a week. Also running 2 or 3 times, same as before. My weight is high but stable and I'm looking more toned.

Have been amazed how much better working out in the evening is, it gets me away from the desk, and the early mornings meant I was missing sleep and binging in the afternoons. When Lockdown started all these options were second best, but now I much prefer this routine. Will probably stick with these classes when they go back to live. The morning classes didn't go onto Zoom.

I'm hoping the yoga lady will keep doing Zoom when her classes go back to live, they are a 25 minute drive away and it's just too time-consuming, but to drop everything 5 minutes before and get on the mat works perfectly.

Looking forward to being able to do runs with people at run club, or parkrun, or an arranged 5k or 10k. I had been training for my first half marathon at the end of March but dropped the distance once it was cancelled.

PatchworkElmer · 26/04/2020 11:52

@MrsFezziwig @WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa

I got it from FitKit UK- most shows as out of stock, but I signed up for a stock notification and they got more in within a week. Disclaimer here that their Trust pilot reviews since Coronavirus hit haven’t been great- I was nervous ordering with them and did it through paypal for extra protection. However I’m very happy with the service and the barbell I received and would use them again.

MrsFezziwig · 26/04/2020 14:06

Thanks Patchwork

BasinHaircut · 26/04/2020 17:51

@StickyProblem same re yoga. I’m loving the option of an online class because it’s so much easier to fit in. I’d love it if they continued after lockdown although I don’t think think they will

Walk, walk and walk. Have always walked anyway but used to do gym classes a few times a week and walk a couple of days.

CountFosco · 26/04/2020 20:26

There is something about swimming isn't there.

First day the pool is open I'll be back. I really miss so much, I'm dreaming of swimming and the cool water flowing over my body. It also doesn't bugger up my flexibility for yoga which I find with a lot of exercise.

minipie · 26/04/2020 20:44

Nothing. Maybe a bit of Joe Wicks before I cba.

I have done pretty much no exercise my entire life and and had just got into going to the gym 2/3 times a week from November. Gym classes are the only exercise I actually do and don’t sack off - I have zero willpower. Now, back to square one.

If I was furloughed and had no kids I like to think I’d be doing something but exercise is just never going to be something I squeeze in before or after a long hard day.

Rollergirl11 · 26/04/2020 20:51

I’m really missing the swimming too. I completely switch off when I swim and just count lengths and I always feel very calm after a swim.

CherryPavlova · 26/04/2020 20:55

Not a huge change but missing swimming in the sea.
We walk. We dance. We garden. It’s all much as ever but the walks aren’t by the beach now and don’t culminate in a swim.

WaterIsWide · 26/04/2020 20:56

All free on YouTube:

Seated aerobics from Jackie Tally
Seated aerobics Paul Eugene Turbo Chair
HasFit
Up To the Beat or Dance Like Nina to finish off

RoseyLentil · 26/04/2020 21:06

Wfh means I have more time as no more 3hr commute each day. I've started doing YouTube yoga and love it. I'm on day 8 of a 30 day "course". It's free which is great as I can't afford to pay. Also doing a lot more gardening too.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 26/04/2020 21:12

I'm doing what I have always done - going for runs, on my spin bike and doing kettlebells. I have all that at home as it works out a lot cheaper than paying for the gym so didn't have to buy it all specially.

BirdieFriendReturns · 26/04/2020 22:18

We have a treadmill. I spend around an hour every other doing running, yoga, lunges etc.

I’ve been going for an hour long walk once a week outside.

Mintypylonsfryingsurplus · 26/04/2020 23:17

Cycle for 45 mins to an hour a day, then own modified version of body pump using barbell, hand weights and resistance bands. Yoga either Maya Fiennes dvd or own workout ( used to teach yoga) also online classes from a retreat I used to stay.
Sometimes wii Zumba, or just dance around house with ipod. Hard to be disciplined some days though, but then remind myself that exercise essential for good immunity. But if days I really cant face long workouts I try to do at least half hour and then kirtan/kriya with breathing exercises for lung function. Its hard though battling middle age spread and HRT weight gain. It would be easy to sit around and munch but I think better for mental health to stick to routines, even if you mix it up with different types of exercises.
Miss swimming, hiking and gym classes though Sad
