I've been accepted on the COVID-19 Vaccine Trial

I've been offered a place on the COVID-19 trial being run by Imperial College.

I'm a little nervous and still debating whether or not to accept. I'm female, BAME and I have two children.

Help me make a decision! What should I do?

I personally wouldn't but if you're going ahead, then best of luck and I hope you keep safe / healthy throughout.

SheeshazAZ09 · 24/04/2020 15:04

OP, I just asked DP who is a scientist and researcher in a medical field what his advice is. He said: first, find out from the researchers what sort of vaccine it is. If it's live attenuated vaccine, don't go near it. If it's a protein, like a spike protein from the virus, it's more likely to be safe.

People without children have dependants too. Elderly parents, relatives with additional needs.......

stuckindoors77 · 24/04/2020 15:12

No idea why anyone would risk it.

You’re fucking crazy

I assume people who think this way don't want a vaccine to be found and are happy to change their lives on a permanent basis instead? Because the bottom line is that science needs these first volunteers in order to move forward with the testing process. No volunteers = no vaccine ultimately. That said, op nobody will judge you for not doing it, but if your reasons still stand then go for it and God bless you.

goldfinchfan · 24/04/2020 15:15

Mums are irreplaceable. Don't do it.

Isolatedbunny · 24/04/2020 15:15

Completely irresponsible when you have two young children. This has to be a joke?

Falafellygood · 24/04/2020 15:16

Personally I wouldn't do it as I have two very young children (my youngest isn't even 1) and my eldest has additional needs. Plus I'm asthmatic.

However, I have a lot of respect for those who are putting themselves forward for this.

onalongsabbatical · 24/04/2020 15:17

I find all this anti-Bill Gates, he's the devil incarnate stuff, weird. Paranoid in the extreme.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/04/2020 15:17

People without children have dependants too. Elderly parents, relatives with additional needs.......

And the same applies to them.

Angel2702 · 24/04/2020 15:17

I really wanted to do this but couldn’t due to a blood clotting issue. It’s a great thing to do.

MrsHardbroom · 24/04/2020 15:22

Only you can decide OP but thanks for even considering this. Ignore the antivaxxers, they pop up on every thread.

Bloodybridget · 24/04/2020 15:24

I wish I could volunteer; atm I'm too old and not in the right area. Huge thanks to everyone taking part in the trial.

Sussexmummys · 24/04/2020 15:29

@Wellwhoknewtoo the clip has given no sources for information and is just peddling rumours to fit his narrative of the situation. we are in the middle of a pandemic it isn't a time to encourage rumours with no sources, and when you ask for sources to get a link to the guardian that has a completely different story.

paap1975 · 24/04/2020 15:37

Thank you!

gnushoes · 24/04/2020 15:48

OP you are brilliant. I'm asthmatic so doubt they'd have me and I hadn't seen the call for volunteers. to the best of my knowledge there have been a few scary incidents with drug trials but none for vaccines.

Angellegna · 24/04/2020 15:53

I would have loved to do this but was ruled out.

Absolutely do it!!

kimlo · 24/04/2020 16:11

@gnushoes. They don't want people with underlying health conditipns for this round, so I'm also out on that, but they probably will for future tests. You also need to live in certain areas and not have had a temperature or cough since february. So I'm ruled out on 3 counts.

cantory · 24/04/2020 16:12

OP this is a personal choice so it is up to you, but in Britain trials tend to be cautious with safety. It is far more likely this is using an adjusted existing vaccine and seeing if it actually works. So you need to be at low risk from covid 19, but the vaccine itself should be safe.
And some on this thread don't seem to realise that every single drug you or your family is ever prescribed has been tested on healthy volunteers. I live near a testing centre and frequently see adverts for it. And they usually pay decently as well.

Keepdistance · 24/04/2020 16:37

Are they testing for antibodies first.?
How will they know people have been in contact but not caught it.
Or just wait to see if participants get seriously ill when they do catch it?

roses2 · 24/04/2020 17:45

I've bitten the bullet and booked my initial screen for next Wednesday. Fingers crossed! I'll keep this thread updated with my journey. I'm so excited to be a part of this! Smile

For those asking how much will I be paid - I believe it's just expenses which will be minimal as I am less than 3 miles away from the test site.

LimitIsUp · 24/04/2020 17:50

roses2 - I am one of the people who has encouraged you. I would be happy to step forward too , but I don't think they are recruiting any more volunteers? Are you at the Southampton site?

onalongsabbatical · 24/04/2020 18:44

Well I'd love to follow your journey with this roses so yes please keep posing, and the very best of luck and thanks again for doing this.

onalongsabbatical · 24/04/2020 18:45

posting not posing ffs!
