Covid

I've been accepted on the COVID-19 Vaccine Trial

I've been offered a place on the COVID-19 trial being run by Imperial College.

I'm a little nervous and still debating whether or not to accept. I'm female, BAME and I have two children.

Help me make a decision! What should I do?

@Oceangirl82 well yes, but actively putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation when your children are still dependent is very different. Every parent carries that weight because the loss of a parent early on colours the rest of people’s lives. That can be mitigated to a point but you need to be very secure in what would happen to knowingly put yourself at risk.

I’d do it. Why did you apply if you didn’t want to have it though?.

This s a matter for you and your family - there is risk, but if you're all as comfortable as possible with the risk, I'd go ahead. You've already been screened/filtered to some extent for risk I know - I looked into it myself but I'm too old. This is basically you being altruistic; it's a gift to society. You have to feel you are giving freely, of your own free will. If you are not happy don't do it. The pressures from outside - whatever you perceive them to be - are not relevant. And thank you. Whichever way you decide, thank you. Flowers

Well done OP. It's people like you who help get stuff done!

It's not at all the same but I've been a blood donor for 20 years. I often have friend thank me for it after a loved one has had an OP or Chemo as they are themselves unable to donate due to health factors.

I can't sign up for this as I have an under lying health condition that would screen me out. So now it's my turn to say 'thanks'

Good for you OP.

Science whether that be in the form of testing, repurposing drugs or developing vaccines is our only way out of this nightmare.

I would do it. I have a very high risk DH and I’m terrified.

The majority of the vaccine ingredients are already used in existing vaccines. You may even get the meningitis vaccine rather than the Covid one.

I would accept like a shot.

I know it’s a different trial but the woman running the oxford trial talked about how it’s the same procedure as other, proven safe vaccines such as flu, etc.....just with a different virus. What she said on the news last night made me confident that it’s safe and will provide work.

This, I'd volunteer if they want any fit 63-yr-olds

Think about why you went on the list and whether you feel anything has changed
Ask for more info about what exactly will happen, how long it all takes, what safeguards

The vaccine must be tested also on those who are BAME, since they seem at higher risk,
so you are an important subject

OP, how quickly did they call you? I filled out the form yesterday so I am still waiting.

Very bad things happen in drugs trials and this particular vaccine has almost certainly not gone thru the usual rigorous safety testing in animals first, as it was fast tracked. Before anyone jumps on me, I'm not anti-science or anti-medicine. I've just read too many drugs trials reports (I'm a science writer; DP is a research scientist) to trust that anyone taking part in a trial will be safe.

this isn't a new vaccine out of nowhere. This team (based in Oxford) have been working on coronavirus vaccines for years. They were able to get something up so quickly because they so fully understand how Coronaviruses work. www.imperial.ac.uk/news/197023/imperial-begin-trials-oxford-covid19-vaccine/

Hero.

Thank you.

Please do it.

Imperial is my alma mater and I am in the ultra high risk category and just coming out of covid. I nearly lost my partner to it as well (doctor).

We salute you (and so do our children!)

I would do it without hesitation. You will be able to withdraw from the trial if you don't feel able to provide informed consent based on the information you are provided with regarding potential adverse events etc.

Report
alittleprivacy · 24/04/2020 13:57

I also assume that one of the reasons this is so fast is because it's a known family of viruses and therefore it's a matter of making changes to existing vaccines (or at least the science behind them) rather than starting totally from scratch.

This is pretty much it. "We" were close enough to a full vaccine against SARS but it was shelved when SARS pretty much ended itself due to it's low R0. The vaccine would probably have worked but was never needed. Now that is being used as the baseline to create the Covid-19 vaccine. It's genuinely very promising.

SunShine682 · 24/04/2020 13:57

Good luck if you do it.

I personally wouldn’t risk it though.
