Which social distancing measures would you find most tolerable to continue?

For me:

Supporting people who want to wear masks but not making it compulsory to wear one except maybe on peak time public transport (those really are the only crowded services where I live); and on London underground of course

Pubs & restaurants stay closed if they can't do 2m betw customer groups

No mass gathering events or team sport (> 6 persons): sorry, sports fans

No live theatre or other performance audiences

One adult only in each group going into a shop/supermarket

Some travel restrictions

Schools, colleges & Unis open but some kind of reduced social contact within schools, so maybe reduced hours

But people can go to offices, most kids have a school routine, haircuts & swimming are possible, etc.

What measures do you hope might be enough & not too painful & sustainable, until we get a vaccine?

I really want pubs and restaurants to be allowed to open, no idea how it would work though. Other than that I’m fine.

midgebabe · 23/04/2020 12:01

I do believe that there will be a thinking of what needs to be done for each case...yes, it's daft to close cinemas forever, so what can we do to reopen and keep infection rates low....which to be fair is in the interest of each cinema anyway as they will close forever through boycott if they become hotbeds of infection

These things take time, it needs to be controlled, it needs to be part of the bigger package, but it will happen , but not this week or next week because the first thing that should get back to normal should probably be the NHS, routine appointments, precautionary testing , none urgent procedure , which means low infection and hospitalisation for covid

Which is getting close. A few more weeks

Then if things are done slowly , the chance of another lockdown are minimised
If things are rushed we will be back to square 1. A second lockdown would be much more damaging than the first

Yes some people will be out of work which is hideous. But probably not the amount that some people here seem to think.

midgebabe · 23/04/2020 12:03

Not all tourism pubs and restaurants will close

Although it doesn't surprise me that there is so little care. I grew up in a mining area. Unemployment 25% when I left school. Government response was get on yer bike. Public response in the south " just get a job in the post office/school/shop" like those jobs existed

ilovecakeandwine · 23/04/2020 12:13

I'm also concerned about the leisure industry,my job impacts if bars and restaurants stay closed I may not have a job .
I think restaurants can open with some social distancing but I agree bars would be difficult.
Schools can open but reduced classes so maybe part time for a few months .
Offices but only if social distancing is doable .
I'd not want the government to relax too much because companies will go back to normal it has to be insistent that only if social distancing is done so less people in the work place . That will mean the furloughed scheme will be for some time and or staff part time / different shifts .
I would hope employers are looking at ways to make this work as this could be the only way to get back to business. Id be surprised if the government carries on the furloughed scheme any later .

Rosehip10 · 23/04/2020 12:18

Even when stuff starts to open I suspect many people are going to be careful about non-essential spending.

MiniTheMinx · 23/04/2020 12:22

All of it, apart from I'd like to see friends. The rest of you.....well I don't mind social distancing Grin.

I think it would be great to never have to work again. I'm lazy as well as anti social.

But, this can't go on. People seem to be suffering from persistent low levels of stress, anxiety and depression. I think there is a sort of collective trauma happening, and our normal sources of support, and distraction are not there.

Tigerbelle · 23/04/2020 12:24

We're quite an isolated rural living family so day-to-day, we're not suffering too badly socially. Miss my mum though and really want to see her soon. I personally am not missing anyone else. DH working on the farm and doesn't like people anyway Grin

Our DC were already home educated so whilst they're missing their friends a bit (didn't see them daily anyway), their learning is carrying on as normal. Therefore whether schools reopen or not, doesn't matter to us.

For me, pub, clubs, restaurants can stay shut. No rush to go back. Do miss Costa etc though!

Big sporting events I won't miss in the slightest, it's the smaller community/sports/hobby clubs that will be missed by us and that we are concerned about. The big football clubs can do one.

Really miss garden centres and just being able to pop to the shops without hassle.

Just being able to do normal things I.e. We were due to be buying some more chickens and collecting a second house greenhouse..such a 'normal', boring things really but because they're non essential, it can't happen.. It actually means quite a lot to us and I'm sure similar for millions of others. I just miss what everyone does....all the things we used to take for granted.

PinkJam · 23/04/2020 12:36

I would accept not being able to go the restaurants, pubs etc. And only being able to meet up in small family/friend groups at someone’s house. And would like recycling centres to be opened

Frompcat · 23/04/2020 12:39

Number one on my list would be being able to visit family again.

Number two would be DS's nursery being open so I could actually get any semblance of work done.

Number three would be being able to drive to nearby countryside to go for a walk. We live in SE London and it's very busy.

catsandlavender · 23/04/2020 12:39

I’m mostly ok with all of it except not seeing my family, so I would like to be able to visit non-vulnerable family members.
I would like schools to go back at least in some way before summer to work on transitions and so the kids can meet their new teachers (and I can meet my new class).
There’s a whole load of other stuff I’d want but that’s what I want most.

FoolsLemonTree · 23/04/2020 12:40

I don't mind social distancing in supermarkets etc.

Anything except the ban on seeing friends in small groups, or even one-to-one. I live alone and desperately want a hug.

catsandlavender · 23/04/2020 12:41

Oh god and football. I really miss football. No chance of that coming back any time soon though.

WildOrchids67 · 23/04/2020 12:47

If people want to wear masks then that's fine. Also okay with only one person per household doing the shopping.

The rest, absolutely not. I love going out for drinks with my friends so I'm looking forward to the pubs reopening. I'm not in restaurants very often but I wouldn't want to see them closed.

I love live theatre and concerts, and while I'm not a huge sports fan I've been to a couple of six nations matches and had tickets for Wimbledon this year.

I get why none of these are happening for the time being, but for me, the sooner we get back to normal, the better!

LemonsNVod · 23/04/2020 12:50

Totally selfishly: all of them, until cancer surgery and treatment is back to normal across the country.

If I wasn’t waiting for cancer surgery I’d probably have said I’d like hairdressers to re-open, and manicurists too, though maybe with increased distancing between clients. The whole sporting and entertainment sector I could do without, for a time.

puffinandkoala · 23/04/2020 12:52

I'm happy with what we have now to an extent. But I want my son back in school. I also want general access to services, eg I need some work doing on my central heating system and I also want to have a radiator replaced but it's not considered "essential work". I think the plumber has misunderstood the rules but it's up to him and I am not in a rush for the radiator and can live with the heating/water issue for the moment. I also want dentistry back to some sort of normal.

Allow small groups to meet up (eg 3/4 people) and family visits.

Allow elite athletes access to their training facilities (including swimming pools where necessary).

And yes to garden waste collections and household tips being reinstated and reopened (some places are restarting their garden waste collections now).

And people who are allowed to open, opening. For example, there are a few places in our town which are already allowed to open but are not:

Fish and chip shop (takeaway only), another one in the town has now reopened

Robert Dyas (hardware)

Family run hardware store

Zero waste store

Dry cleaners

|And can Decathlon please extend their click and collect (not essential but I'd like a kettle bell to use at home and could collect from their nearest store 5 miles away)

I am not worried about leisure/arts facilities as I read books and watch films at home. Obviously if you earn your living that way it is different.

Frompcat · 23/04/2020 12:55

Judging by this thread, theatre is fucked. Very sad for the numerous friends and family members I have who work in that sector. There is very little public sympathy for them as it is.

Asuitablecat · 23/04/2020 13:02

I want the nice things open again.gyms, pubs, theatres, holidays abroad. Going out occasionally and getting to dress up and get away from the kids makes going to work worth it. As it is, I have nothing to look forward to other than getting fat. I want to talk to my neighbours without distance.

RefreshingOcean · 23/04/2020 13:04

Whoever said those in the pub/restaurant/leisure industry can just 'get other jobs' what world are you living in? Jobs are few and far between at the moment and it will be ultra competitive to gain employment if the whole sector is shut down. Especially if people have spent their whole professional career in that sector and will need to start all over again. Someone said they can just go and work in care homes? That requires training plus that sort of job is just not doable for some people.

Supermarket jobs have always been competitive - I worked in one during my uni years and every vacancy then received about 24 applications per job. People say there are fruit picking jobs but I haven't been able to find any openings at all. Some people really do live in cloud cookoo land if they think the whole leisure industry can just 'get another job'.

AnotherMurkyDay · 23/04/2020 13:11

I'm willing to sacrifice most of it, but I really would love my health appointments back.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 23/04/2020 13:16

I work in a factory with 300+ people. Unless the rules on social distancing are relaxed we can't go back to work as there is no space, and in some aspects of the job, being 2 metres apart is just not possible.

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 13:18

Just go and work in care homes
I can't see that being a popular option😳

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 13:20

So many industries depend upon economies of scale, packing people in as densely as possible
This is no longer feasible

Sooverthemill · 23/04/2020 13:21

All of them

Kazzyhoward · 23/04/2020 13:26

If pubs/restaurants are only allowed a certain amount of customers, would it be worth opening, financially speaking?

No, which is why lots of shops/businesses which are allowed to open have closed and have no short term plans for re-opening. The whole business plan of lots of businesses, especially catering, hospitality, tourism, etc is "pile em high" at the peak times. It's when they make their money, not all the off-peak times when they're loss making due to overheads, staffing etc.

Not to mention, many takeaways, pubs, cafes, restaurants, etc have tiny kitchens where social distancing of the staff is impossible. It's why lots of ethnic takeaways are still open - because they're being staffed by family who are already living together in the houehold, so it doesn't matter to them that they are cramped up together in a tiny kitchen!

Pubs & restaurants won't re-open until (1) the 2 metre rule has been dropped and (2) there are enough customers to make it viable. Even when restrictions are lifted, I fear huge numbers of people will continue to avoid crowded places until there's a vaccine.

MRex · 23/04/2020 13:27

Things we should have: international travel restricted to cargo or returning residents, keeping space in shops, masks compulsory for anybody over 5 on public transport

Things we should open up as soon as possible: hospitals; move the covid-19 patients to a few big specialist hospitals and have the rest start other treatments again (subject to a negative covid check; if positive they should get their other treatment in a covid hospital or wait to recover first). With affected companies putting distancing in place: all other retail. Where office workers can work from home though, they should continue to do so, I actually think offices should be the very last to go back, because they can largely function now.

Subject to very clear guidance I'd like to see outdoor playgrounds for accompanied kids opened. Also letting people decide to visit their own families and close friends if they believe they are low risk and can keep some distance. Some will take the piss, but they are doing so anyway, whereas a rule change would mean we could just go to PIL and sit in the garden safely distanced, particularly as all of us are very careful.

It's a little soon for regional travel, maybe in a month or two. Too soon for schools and childcare in my opinion, they can't keep distance only limit interactions by having less from each year group, and families with someone vulnerable can't go, tricky for vulnerable teachers too. Too soon for pubs, restaurants and theatres too.
