Which social distancing measures would you find most tolerable to continue?

For me:

Supporting people who want to wear masks but not making it compulsory to wear one except maybe on peak time public transport (those really are the only crowded services where I live); and on London underground of course

Pubs & restaurants stay closed if they can't do 2m betw customer groups

No mass gathering events or team sport (> 6 persons): sorry, sports fans

No live theatre or other performance audiences

One adult only in each group going into a shop/supermarket

Some travel restrictions

Schools, colleges & Unis open but some kind of reduced social contact within schools, so maybe reduced hours

But people can go to offices, most kids have a school routine, haircuts & swimming are possible, etc.

What measures do you hope might be enough & not too painful & sustainable, until we get a vaccine?

I’d be happy for supermarkets to continue the way they are. I don’t like the queuing outside but once you’re in it’s lovely and quiet!!

I feel sorry for those who own pubs and restaurants in this, but for us personally we never go to the pub and rarely out for something to eat so I can live with those being shut.

fessmess · 23/04/2020 08:23

I work in a pub restaurant. You can't through millions onto the scrap heap. What about tourism? I heard if there's no summer season basically Cornwall goes bankrupt.

fessmess · 23/04/2020 08:24

*throw. God the lockdown is addling my brain.

Notajogger · 23/04/2020 08:26

Continued WFH would be good. Saves the commute and you get so much more done!

lyingwanker · 23/04/2020 08:27

On a personal level I'd love the hair and beauty salons to reopen so I can feel a bit better about myself again.

I hate having to queue to get inside the shops but LOVE that people keep their distance. I also quite like people wearing masks so I don't have to breathe in their germs.

I'd also quiet like schools and work to go back to normal soon but they probably won't and I can cope with that for a good while longer yet.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/04/2020 08:29

Happy for pubs/clubs to stay shut, I don't really go to them anyway.

Social distancing in shops, I'm fine with that.

I really do want schools to reopen because as long as they're shut I cannot go to work. Appreciate that it won't be any time soon though.

reefedsail · 23/04/2020 08:31

I'd like to see Ofsted ease up on schools. At the start of C19 when schools were struggling with sick staff and students, they tweeted "business as usual" re inspections.

Now, be fair to them @middleager they did say that they would consider postponing an inspection if the Head had died.

crazydiamond222 · 23/04/2020 08:32

A) Increased personal hygeine, wearing face masks in public, 2 metre rule in public
B) Continue lockdown for vulnerable groups
C) Ban on international travel and on large events and gatherings.

Would like all schools and businesses to start operating in the next few weeks bar the above.

Keepdistance · 23/04/2020 08:32

Keep shut
Hairdresser
Schools as no distancing they wont wear masks

Open
Bookshops
Diy
Garden centres
Kids play parks
Zoos - limit numbers

Adjust
Pubs /restaurants- 2m apart more outside spaces and
gazebos etc. They should increase prices. But if people start getting drunk in the street close again.

For theatre put them with Sky/netflix
I would love to see Harry potter eg.
Same with gigs some people would pay to watch at home. Same with museums.

Get testing as if 5% have had it (concern re reactivation though) they could get back to work /school.

no idea what i'd do about holidays. Even in uk. Because it will infect the tourist areas. And holidays without a swimming pool where appartment changeover cleaning is so quick...

I would probably open NT gardens but less than half a car park. Ie leave gap each side of car. Beep a machine to go in not a person etc.
Priority for members. Book online.

You could book time slots for shops so only certain number allowed in (online or paper) so not all in a Q outside. Customers could use self service till in more shops.

In fact booking online before going places could be really key.
As this on trains/buses could keep numbers down and say a seat number mean you are sat further from others.

Agree with others increasing supermarket online and click and collect. I think too many non vulnerable would happily pay £10+ for a slot (as long as you can get more than 80 items).

I think masks and antibody testing are key and would have everyone wearing a mask (adults) including cyclists and runners (who i would encourage off the narrow footpaths and pavements as they are potentially blowing on everyone.

School stay off till they see whether there is another peak because more important to get the workers back some who dont have kids.

More cleaning of locations /public transport.

Keep people wfh so off transport.

Masks are the key to people being out

In fact it would make sense for Govt to be running a major teacher training recruitment drive to facilitate safer schools. This would enable parents to return to work and provide decent employment for the future.

I think that’s a great idea-there is a huge teacher retention and recruitment problem. There would need to be a huge incentive for people to train though as if they don’t want to do it at the moment, they won’t want to do it during Covid.

Bursaries? Those might encourage people to train, but don’t make people stay.

Far better to make a few simple changes to teaching, imo and maybe lots of those existing, qualified and highly skilled teachers might want to return.

Having more teachers probably wouldn’t facilitate safer schools though. If we follow other countries and have classes of 10, there are no other places to put these classes in most schools-we’d still only be able to have 1/3 of the children in at any one time (10 to a classroom).

Greendayz · 23/04/2020 08:40

Could keep - wfh, no pubs/restaurants/ cinema/etc, no foreign travel, no parties, no sporting events

Would like to see - end to not seeing close friends and family, especially those who live alone, schools opening, at least on part time basis, campsites/holiday rentals in the UK, and ending restrictions on moving house

carrythecan · 23/04/2020 08:40

With regards to the pub and restaurants staying closed, it's not just about the potential job losses, although that is devastating enough (and no, they can't all go and get jobs elsewhere!), it's also about the contribution to the economy.

The industry contributes more than £120bn a year to the economy and is worth more than the automotive, pharmaceuticals and aeronautics industries combined. More than 3.2 million people work in pubs, restaurants and other outlets, making it the third-largest sector for employment. A further 2.8 million work in the wider supply chain.

The figures have been taken form this article - www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/16/coronavirus-business-leaders-call-for-dramatic-rise-in-emergency-support

What's the point in doing the top three if you're going to do the bottom one?

midgebabe · 23/04/2020 11:03

The point is to prioritise what you relax first and then see if we can keep R0 below 1 by doing what is the most important things for most people ?

mollypuss1 · 23/04/2020 11:14

The amount of people who think the millions who work in the leisure industry can just get other jobs is staggering. If only it were that simple.

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 11:16

I am not at all a people person so I am enjoying social distancing, however I am a gym person so I'm very unhappy about the closure of gyms

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 11:18

however we must try and focus on what is best for society as a whole and it seems to me that if children were able to go back to school that would relieve an awful lot of pressure?
Parents with young children are among the people that I feel most concerned for.

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 11:22

over the longer-term if everyone would consent to wearing some kind of tracking device then we could all see in real-time where people were congregating and could be awarded points for avoiding situations of high transmission
I realise that there are huge privacy issues with everyone being tracked, but that would be a way to minimise transmission on the level of society as a whole if we could find some way to make it work

cathyandclare · 23/04/2020 11:27

I really don't want to lose the film and theatre industries- if we close them until/if a vaccine is available they will disappear. As a nation, our film industries, west-end theatres and regional arts venues are a huge strength. It would be devastating to lose them.

Is there no way of having people in alternate seats and wearing masks, with cleaning after performances?

Qasd · 23/04/2020 11:32

Really I need opportunities to socialise so I guess if they do not open pubs and restaurants at least the right to meet up at homes and to travel across country to see family and friends. I would like schools opened up in a way which allows socialising but realistically not sure how that works re social distancing - I do think that not being able to social with friends for over a year will have a massive impact on the social development of young children.

I don’t care if I never have to go into the office and see my colleagues again😂! But I want to see my friends and family and I want the same for my children

BlackeyedSusan · 23/04/2020 11:37

I could live without church meetings, cinema, theatre, large sporting events with crowds. (run the events and televise?) concerts, festivals, conferences, Anything where lots of people mix from different groups areas etc. restrictions of restuarants and cafes. (I am really missing those though)

I would like hospital outpatients clinics to reopen if possible.

I would like to introduce seeing a limited number of people. Eg you could visit within a small family group. (thing is with inlaws etc, that increases contacts quite a lot. so maybe if you could have two or three household limit. or a time between visits. eg once a month visit?)

we are currently transporting children between homes and are working to gether as a two household unit to keep dd safe. no contact out of the two homes, sharing food and deliveries. )

I miss supermarket shopping, but I can't stand in a queue without being in pain or falling over. walking hurts a bit if too long and weirdly gardening is fine.. (maybe moving in lots of different ways helps)

Rosehip10 · 23/04/2020 11:43

If there is social distancing in pubs/restaurants/cafe etc they may not bother opening - if taking are so low they won't cover wages/bill/supplies.

KaronAVyrus · 23/04/2020 11:44

We’ve been lucky with the weather so far so queuing to get into the supermarket hasn’t been that big a deal. Just wait till it’s been pissing it down for a couple of weeks and it won’t be so much fun.

I’m slightly bemused that so many of you seem so happy for the unemployment rate to reach 6 million plus as you’ve decided that restaurants/pubs/tourism don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. The entire economy is inter connected and if unemployment reaches those rates most jobs could be at risk or at the very least expected to take a pay cut. Only NHS frontline and teachers will be safe.
And everyone who is now working completely from home - your boss could very well replace you with someone much cheaper in India.

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 11:47

We need to find new ways of doing things, to maximize quality of life whilst minimising opportunities for transmission of the virus
We should also focus on promoting health and cardiovascular fitness so that anyone who gets the virus has the best chance of surviving it.
Overcrowding and poor health have severely exacerbated the consequences of the virus.
high levels of inequality are some of the the reasons we have overcrowding and poor health despite being a wealthy country

Rosehip10 · 23/04/2020 11:49

@cathyandclare No, as such arrangements would probably not cover costs - unless ticket prices are sky high.
