6 year old with coronavirus symptoms

My 6 year old has a sore throat, bad cough, slight wheeze and temp temperature of 37.6. I’m really scared for him and for my vulnerable DH. What do I do? How did he get ill? None of us have left the house/ garden for 3 weeks because of DH.

Could it be allergies if you haven't been out?

Woowooah · 22/04/2020 23:25

Just tested his temp again, (he’s up because he feels ill) and it’s 37.2. So was the high temp a fluke? I feel sick with worry.

Stay calm remember children statistically get it very mildly. Just monitor them.

RaspberryBubblegum · 22/04/2020 23:37

I thought 37.5 was normal so he was only 0.1 degree over? I really wouldn't worry about that. There are other bugs that give you a cough going around! I hope he feels better in the morning to put your mind at rest 💐

We caught a sore throat and nasty cough. We hadnt been out for 4w by then. Only food deliveries.

ofwarren · 23/04/2020 00:10

My 4 year old came down with symptoms when I was suspected to have it.
I felt so very ill but he was just off for 1 day with a temp and then had a wheeze for about 4 days and then just a cough for about a week longer.
He was hardly ill at all.

jomaIone · 23/04/2020 00:14

37.6 isn't a high temp

Barryisland · 23/04/2020 00:26

It sounds like a normal childrens cold.

Woowooah · 23/04/2020 00:29

His temperature is normally 36.5 so it seems high for him?

But how has he even got a cold when none of us have had any contact with anyone else for weeks?

Covid can incubate over 28d.

There are other things with long incubation too.
Glandular fever.

CoronaLonaNameChange · 23/04/2020 08:09

My DS had a temperature of 40 with coronavirus. He was very lethargic (basically just slept) for 2 days, then day 3 he was running around as if nothing happened!!! Keep an eye on him, but he'll more than likely be fine in a few days Flowers

Splitsunrise · 23/04/2020 08:12

Have you had any shopping delivered? Letters through the postbox? Anyone drop anything else off on doorstop?

Is your husband clinically extremely vulnerable and being told to shield (did he get a letter from NHS?). Presume if so he is keeping separate from you anyway so hopefully that will be ok Flowers

I’m sure it’s just a cold or something else. Try not to panic.

stickwoman · 23/04/2020 08:14

Could it be hay fever? We've had similar symptoms in our house but accompanied by watery eyes and sneezing. None of us have been out for 5 weeks. Tree pollen is really high at the moment and apparently causes an itchy throat.

jomaIone · 23/04/2020 09:34

It doesn't matter what his normal temp is, it varies through out the day and depending on a lot of different factors. A doctor would class 38+ a 'fever'. 37.8 or 9 is borderline. 37.6 could be he's been snuggled up under his duvet and got cosy, been running around etc etc

ItsAllForYou · 23/04/2020 09:40

Could it be hay fever? Pollen has been really high

Woowooah · 23/04/2020 10:20

Our house is so tiny it’s not really practical for DH to be isolated from us. We have done our best, but we live in a tiny flat.

His temp is 38.2 today and his throat hurts more. Sad

His temperature just keeps getting higher. Have given calpol but it’s had no affect. I’m struggling not to let him see I’m panicking now.

RaspberryBubblegum · 23/04/2020 13:26

Please try not to panic. Children get fevers even for colds at times. Their bodies don't know the appropriate reaction sometimes so just go in guns blazing.
DD3 had a fever of 38.5 a few months ago. It lasted a week and we did end up ringing 111 as they tell you to call if it's been longer than 5 days. She was fine 2 days later and I felt kind of stupid for calling them 🙈
Let him rest, give him paracetamol, and keep an eye on the temperature. If you are really worried call 111 for advice. 💐

BighouseLittlemouse · 23/04/2020 13:46

Hi OP - if you are worried then maybe ring your doctors surgery. They will usually give you a telephone or video consultation.

A few days before lockdown my DS (5) was unwell. His temperature climbed to 42.5 and I did ring the doctors. They gave some good advice.

Woowooah · 23/04/2020 14:15

His temperature seems to have settled at 39.1 it isn’t coming down with calpol. He looks pale and not himself. Have called the GP, they just advised keeping a close eye for now with plenty of fluids offered and regular paracetamol.

It sounds more like tonsilitis, given the high temp and very sore throat? Tonsilitis can be bacterial rather than viral too, which might explain how he has got ill when you've been so careful. Can you have a look at his throat?

BlackInk · 23/04/2020 14:27

Even bacterial tonsilitis doesn't necessarily need antibiotics. Drs usually recommend watch and wait...

Woowooah · 23/04/2020 14:34

His tonsils/ throat look fine. Im giving him hot lemon and honey to help sooth his throat and help with the cough.

Hoggleludo · 23/04/2020 14:39

It's a high temp. So usually above 38.5. Nearer 39.

Hoggleludo · 23/04/2020 14:43

Also. His temp isn't a temp at 37.2. It's up to 37.5. Even if his normal temp is 36.5.

My daughter runs quite warm. But when she's sick. Her temp shoots to 41. 41.5. We saw a special fever specialist

Basically. A fever is a good thing! (When we talking fevers. Regardless of what's causing it. Just fever is what I'm talking about)

A fever is bringing up his core temp. Which kills the bacteria. Because we've become a world of paracetamol at any slight of a fever. The body doesn't get a chance to kill the fever. Even if your child suffers a febrile seizure. (Which is horrible. I know). There isn't actually any risk. (Unless they are in a very small cot. Where they could hit their head). The guy we saw is one of the worlds leading pead doctors. For fevers. It's so interesting

So please don't worry about his temp. It's fine. It's doings it job. It needs to go slightly higher.
