Hey guys

So I'm trying to sort out a sick note on the nhs website but I am having a real big problem.

I am a mother of 2 children with asthma with my youngest having chronic asthma. We haven't received a letter to say we have to isolate but as a mother I am doing everything to prevent any of my children catching the virus. I work for the nhs on a gastro ward but we are now looking after 17 covid 19 patients. I am unable to go to work as I fear bringing it home to my children.

Can someone please help me with a link or guide me to the right direction to fill out this form

Thanks

If you haven't received the shielding letter but think that you should have I thought you were supposed to contact your GP?

Edintink1 · 22/04/2020 16:58

Ask to be redeployed to a non covid area.

Winter2020 · 22/04/2020 16:59

sorry misread as you also having asthma

Babyroobs · 22/04/2020 17:00

Yes I would ask to be redeployed to a low risk area 9 if such a place exists ! ). Not sure your Gp will issue sick note if you're not sick or at risk yourself.

Spied · 22/04/2020 17:03

I'd ring GP and ask if your youngest should have a letter and if they could provide one.
I'd also mention my fear. Could you get a sick note on grounds of anxiety issues?

jadey0891 · 22/04/2020 17:13

Hi
Thanks for all your replies.
I've contacted my GP and they won't issue any letters or sick notes.
I can't get redeployed anywhere as I don't have childcare for my children as there dad is also isolating and looking after his mum who is also high risk.
I've explained to them that I need this letter. I can't afford to lose my job.(everyone is in this position too sorry)
It's difficult

Unless it's changed you can't get an online sick note because you're shielding, even if you have a letter. Those sick notes are for people who are isolating for 7 days with symptoms, or people isolating for 14 days as a family member has symptoms. AFAIK shielding isn't classed by the government as being sick and it's entirely up to employer's how they handle it.

daisypond · 22/04/2020 17:21

You won’t be able to get a sick note, though, because you’re not sick.

Sennetti · 22/04/2020 17:23

Self isolation unpaid is what people where I work ended up doing I’m afraid

Noworrieshere · 22/04/2020 17:24

I don't know how to help you but that sounds like a truly shit situation.

If there is absolutely no workaround for people in your situation then I think that is really shocking. I hope there is something you can do and someone can point you in the right direction.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/04/2020 17:26

As a key worker don’t you get child care?

fleamadonna · 22/04/2020 18:01

Just as an unhelpful aside I’d like to point out that all asthma is chronic.

It means long term. Which all asthma is.

In any case I sympathise. My daughter is in the shielded group for her asthma. Is there no one at work who you can explain this to?

HuntIdeas · 22/04/2020 19:19

Why can’t their dad look after the kids at the same time that he looks after his mother? Or he will need to contact social services to find someone else to look after his mother. Or you use key worker childcare for the kids. It looks like you are just coming up with excuses because you don’t want to work but don’t want to lose any pay either - it doesn’t work like that

pocketem · 22/04/2020 19:47

Why do you think you can get a sick note when you are not sick?

If you don't want to work, resign and stop drawing a wage

ExclamationPerfume · 22/04/2020 20:10

You aren't sick so why do you think you should get a sick note?

jadey0891 · 22/04/2020 20:23

I've contacted everyone I need to. Occupational health, GP, HR. I even contacted asthma uk.

Can you take unpaid leave or carers leave or annual leave for now?

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/04/2020 21:02

It sounds awful but unfortunately if you’re not sick, you are unable to get a sick note. How have you been managing up to now since lockdown began with childcare?

BamboozledandBefuddled · 22/04/2020 21:09

Firstly, are you certain your child should be in the shielding group? There's specific criteria to meet regarding medication, it isn't automatic that people are told to shield if they have asthma.

Secondly, family members in the same household as the shielding person aren't advised to shield/isolate. Even if you get a shielding letter, it is entirely up to your employer how they handle it. Babyroobs has probably listed all the options available to you but ultimately it's your employer's call.

If your child isn't included in the shielding group then TBH I don't think you have any options. There's nothing in place to say employers must accommodate parents who are worried about taking the virus home to their children - many parents are still working and they can only hope all the precautions they take are enough to keep their children safe.

daisypond · 22/04/2020 21:20

You can ask for unpaid leave or carers’ leave. It’s quite a common situation that lots if people find themselves in right now. There is no easy solution.

Ohnoducks · 22/04/2020 21:46

If you haven't received the shielding letter you need to submit your daughter's details here digital.nhs.uk/coronavirus/shielded-patient-list if you haven't already, this will then be reviewed and they will decide if she meets the criteria. If so you'll get a letter a few days later. Unfortunately unless you are sick (self isolating due to symptoms, signed off with anxiety etc) you're not entitled to a sicknote though, but most employers are offering either partly pair or unpaid parental leave, however a lot of families are having to split temporaily, it may well be you have to send your children to their dad and his mother if that is a shielded household to keep them safe and have someone to care for them while you work, unless you can afford to take unpaid leave. It's a shit situation and I really do feel for you.

jadey0891 · 22/04/2020 22:54

@JayAlfredPrufrock
Yes as a key worker I do but because of my children's health we can't travel

jadey0891 · 22/04/2020 22:59

I think some of you are getting things mixed up. I have been working as Lookingg after sick patients. However I spoke with GP about my situation with my children and they adviced me not to go work because of my children's health problems. I want to go back to work if I could.

@HuntIdeas
If you read the guidelines you will see why. My partner can't come and see the children because he could be a carrier and bring it to my children
