How long can we carry on like this for?

Anyone else starting to wonder just how long we can carry on like this before everything irrevocably falls apart?

How will we ever recover as a country?

@JediJim People are buying more food and drink to eat at home and will use more electric at home.
Do you know what a wet market is and that we have them in the UK?

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 20:57

Farmers, food producers, lorry drivers and supermarkets are all still going. Food is the one thing we won’t run out of

Yes but they won't when the economy collapses, which is what will happen if we stay locked down til there is a vaccine. Do you seriously not get that?

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 20:57

Even if restaraunts/ bars were to open before a vaccine would you be happy to go to one? I fear most ppl would stay away anyway so they wouldn't be making much anyway. Social distancing might work for some places but not for the above.

Oh good god yes, I can't wait to eat out again. As soon as restaurants are back open I'll be back.

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 20:59

I wish people would stop saying oh it's a choice between the economy and saving lives. It really isn't. With no economy there ARE no lives.

Lovemusic33 · 19/04/2020 21:02

I would happily go and eat out, it’s something I really miss and most places here are usually quite enough to distance from others.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 19/04/2020 21:20

Oh good god yes, I can't wait to eat out again. As soon as restaurants are back open I'll be back

Us too Grin DH has suggested we eat out every night for at least a fortnight when it's possible.

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 21:23

My Granddad who is 85 with pulmonary fibrosis says he can't wait to get back to the Angler's club for fish and chips!

Paintforkitchen · 19/04/2020 21:24

We will be first in line for restaurants when they reopen (provided dh still hs a job and we can afford it of course Confused)

I have come to realise over the last few weeks that we pretty much eat out all weekend, even breakfast sometimes. The amount of extra meal planning and cooking I’m doing is very draining!

5zeds · 19/04/2020 21:27

I wish people would stop saying oh it's a choice between the economy and saving lives. It really isn't. With no economy there ARE no lives. are you saying you’d rather be dead than live in poverty?

RuffleCrow · 19/04/2020 21:29

As long as it takes.

Quartz2208 · 19/04/2020 21:30

@5zeds but that implies that CV kills everyone. It doesnt. The chances of me dying from it (and according to 111 I have probably already had it) arent actually that high

Inkpaperstars · 19/04/2020 21:32

I wish people would stop saying oh it's a choice between the economy and saving lives. It really isn't. With no economy there ARE no lives.

The chancellor emphasised during his most recent conference that the economy and health go hand in hand, it said it is not a trade off right now because if the virus were left to run unchecked at this point the economy would collapse even more than it currently is. The balance will change every day, but given how advanced the spread of Covid was in the UK before we locked down, the economic activity we get back has been achieved by lockdown.

JediJim · 19/04/2020 21:32

No economy no NHS. If there’s a massive reduction in people paying tax then how everything be paid for?

Blackbear19 · 19/04/2020 21:33

woodchuck99 you missed my point. Most WFH jobs require other people to actually be out doing stuff. I cannot think of any industry where individuals can all be WFH without someone else generating work.

Yes we do have cars fully insured sitting on the drive way. Unless we are out of lockdown one will not be getting replaced. Therefore less for the insurance industry.

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 21:35

are you saying you’d rather be dead than live in poverty?

As someone who grew up in abject poverty, as someone whose father comes from a country where people literally starved to death in the streets, yes I am.

But BTW if the economy collapses it will cause deaths, not "just" poverty.

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 21:35

No economy no NHS

Yep, and people seem to be unable to get their heads round that.

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 21:36

I am perfectly supportive of the lockdown by the way, I just don't see how it's feasible for it to continue beyond another month, maybe two at the most.

Loverofoldfilms · 19/04/2020 21:37

I am with wanttorunandhide

I have never been so unwell for such a prolonged period of time before. People who think it's like a cold/flu don't know anything. I have completely changed my mind. Even after 4 weeks, I still have symptoms, my lungs hurt, etc. If I am not immune (which WHO seems to say), then I do not want to risk getting this again. Horrible, horrible bug.

SeaSandandSun · 19/04/2020 21:38

I doubt schools will reopen this school year.
I live in the Middle East and we have been on varying stages of lockdown for 5 weeks. They announced a few weeks ago that schools will not reopen this school year. Since all education is private here it’s a big of a kick in the teeth!

midgebabe · 19/04/2020 21:38

Why is it hard to realise it's a balance. We need economy to fund the NHS but there is no point having an economy to support the NHS if there is no NHS either.

The stress that medics are under , the lack of PPE, even without the death rate we can't let this thing run unchecked and expect a functioning NHS

And the economic impact of an unchecked virus could be worse than the controlled outbreak. No lockdown would not mean a healthy economy.

Frompcat · 19/04/2020 21:39

People who think it's like a cold/flu don't know anything.

Well for some people it is, sorry. My cousin and his wife (both NHS frontline) have both just had it. They said it was no worse than a bad cold for both of them and both are now back at work. Their three year old child, who is asthmatic, displayed no symptoms at all.

southeastdweller · 19/04/2020 21:41

No it really isn't feasible for it to go on for another month or more, not when it's costing us - yes us - £2.4 billion per day. The young and the healthy need to get back to work asap, albeit with as many social distancing strategies as is realistic to implement.

TeddyIsaHe · 19/04/2020 21:43

My sister had it (tested as she’s a ward sister in a covid ward) and she was absolutely fine. Said it felt like a bad cold, and the worst thing about it was losing her sense of taste.

It does affect people differently of course, but it’s not always horrendous.

BeijingBikini · 19/04/2020 21:43

Even if restaraunts/ bars were to open before a vaccine would you be happy to go to one?

Me and all my family/friends/neighbours absolutely would, probably the minute they re-open

Elle1234 · 19/04/2020 21:44

I think it will go on until the new hospitals are ready. It's not about stopping the spread, it's about easing the pressure on the NHS.
Most of us will probably catch it at some point, we're just delaying the inevitable as less lives will be lost of the NHS can manage.
