Lockdown better or worse with good weather?

Cherryghost · 17/04/2020 23:26

Just wondering whether people think lockdown is easier and more adhered to with better weather. Kids play in garden , bbqs etc (but then there is the other side of the coin people wanting to go out more because it's nice)
Or if it was raining every day would more people adhere to the rules and not go for daily exercise but mental health would certainly take a hit staying in the house and hardly going out.
Or would people not mind as much that it is raining they aren't missing doing things outside and don't mind staying in?

What do people think would be better for lockdown overall
Sunny days or Rain?

I think I find it easier when it's sunny. I'm lucky to have a garden and the sun gives us a change of scenery and something else to do by using the garden. Can completely understand people saying they find the rain easier to deal with though as you don't feel as though you're missing out on things, especially if you don't have access to a garden.

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 17/04/2020 23:29

I have 3 children age 6 and under. Definitely better in the sun! We have a small house but are lucky to have a garden and they have been outside most of the time. It would be absolutely miserable if it was cold/wet.

TheoriginalLEM · 17/04/2020 23:31

Because I am lucky enough to have a garden and can walk to the beach in five minutes then the weather being good has made things much nicer.

I am spending rather too much time in my back garden having wine though Hmm

I am not going to buy anymore alcohol ...I'm NOT.

NuffSaidSam · 17/04/2020 23:33

Overall sunny days are definitely better I think.

Although I do agree more people would stay in, more of the time if it was cold, dark and rainy.

MargotB7 · 17/04/2020 23:36

I'm lucky to have a nice garden so it's better for me when it's sunny when I'm not busy. However I'm working part time self employed and studying so get more done when it's rubbish.

jelly79 · 17/04/2020 23:40

Sunny gets my vote all day long! Even though I am WFH to have that hour or 2 outside for a run /walk or play in the garden is a godsend!

peppermintcapsules · 17/04/2020 23:58

I don't have young children but the sun's been fab for deep cleaning. Have also been painting one bedroom and the corridor and it's great with the windows open. We live in a rural area so can walk for miles from our door.

PumpkinP · 18/04/2020 01:06

SUN but then I have a garden. I’ve seen people on here say they wish it was raining because they live in flats and seeing the nice weather makes lock down harder. I do think lockdown would have been easier in winter when it’s freezing outside so you want to stay in anyway so can see it from both sides

Chrisinthemorning · 18/04/2020 05:31

Much much easier in nice weather. DS happier and we spend a lot of time in the garden.

LonginesPrime · 18/04/2020 06:32

I think it's less stressful to social distance for exercise in the park when it's raining as there are fewer people to worry about.

But overall, better to have the sun - parcels can be left outside, decluttering can still happen (people tend to leave stuff outside their gates in good weather for others to take as they please), you can dry stuff outside and free up indoor space for living.

And the sunshine does the world of good for people's mental health too.

BestOption · 18/04/2020 06:43

I live in a flat, I don't have a garden. I still prefer it when it's sunny. I find it less depressing, I can have the door & windows open letting the sun & air in. It feels 'hopeful'. Yes, it makes you think more about the places you'd normally go in nice weather,, but for me, it's still preferable.

However, if it stops people having get togethers or picnic/sunbathing in parks/at the beach I'll take the rain etc.

Anyway, it's not like we can choose.

crazydiamond222 · 18/04/2020 06:48

Definitely sun as we can go outside plus my mood is slways better when the sun is out. I am so glad this didn't happen in the winter, it would have made it a lot harder.

yearinyearout · 18/04/2020 06:50

Definitely sunny. I get depressed in winter anyway, the sun definitely helps my mood. I'm Getting out with the dog every day for a good walk which makes all the difference to me, yes I'd love a week at the seaside or a big walk over the hills in the sunshine but I'll cope in the garden.

LabStaff · 18/04/2020 06:53

I was thinking about this - it's definitely better in nice weather. Can you imagine how miserable it would be in interminably cold / grey / wet weather? It sometimes feels a bit unreal though - when it's beautifully sunny, but then you remember that we're in the middle of a global pandemic.

majesticallyawkward · 18/04/2020 07:10

I'm not sure, it's nice to get out but every time we go in to the garden we are dive bombed by super aggressive wasps and it's stresses me out more. I think one of the neighbours has a nest and either doesn't know or hasn't done anything about it, but it means I have dd screaming and crying or refusing to go outside or in constant trying waft the stripey bastards away.

The amount of people I see blatantly breaking social distancing is awful, posting pics of family bbqs on fb, meet ups in the park, people having friends over for drinks because it was a bank holiday, dozens of drunk idiots on quad bikes flying around. The good weather brought out the worst in some.

rosie1959 · 18/04/2020 07:15

50/50 it's better when its sunny but its buggered the spring and summer when we tend to do far more in winter

pumpkinpie01 · 18/04/2020 07:22

I much prefer the sun it just lifts my mood , yesterday I was a bit grumpy for the first time in all of this and I realised it was due to the change in weather as nothing else had changed . @majesticallyawkward apparently burnt coffee will keep wasps away.

Wired4sound · 18/04/2020 07:24

I sounds like we all could do with the vitamin D so I’ll go for in the sun ☀️

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 18/04/2020 07:35

I'm in Oz so heading into winter here and I am dreading it! We bought a house with a pool in February so I have been loving having a daily swim, but its getting a bit cold so that wont appeal pretty soon. I hate winter anyway, even though it doesn't get properly cold here, although I don't mind a brisk walk on the beach in winter, and thankfully that is still allowed here.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/04/2020 07:39

I'm finding it worse because I have no garden or outdoor space and it gets incredibly hot in my flat because it's such a sun trap. Having no choice but to be indoors when the weather is nice is horrible. At least if it was cold and raining I wouldn't mind being stuck inside.

Owlight637 · 18/04/2020 07:43

I prefer rain. You can get cosy, watch films guilt free. When the suns out you feel you should be out in the garden but our garden is tiny, we’ve got nothing to really do in it. DS is 11. The weather next week is going to be beautiful!

MurrayTheMonk · 18/04/2020 07:50

It's been gloomy and cold here since yesterday lunchtime and I've have felt noticeably gloomier in myself so I'd say Sun was better. (Though I noticed a lot of people on social media Etc seemed to hit a bit of a wall yesterday maybe as we hit what might be the half way point of lock down but we don't really know do we?)

Sharkyfan · 18/04/2020 07:51

I like the mixture but I think it’s been great to have sun initially and it really lifted my mood
I like the odd rainy/gloomy day though because it feels more acceptable and fitting to snuggle up and watch films/Netflix.
But I would find days on end of bad weather very challenging

mynameiscalypso · 18/04/2020 07:53

Going against the grain; much prefer rain and cloud. It feels much more acceptable to snuggle up with the baby and watch Netflix when it's gloomy outside. When it's sunny, I feel like we have to do stuff (even if that stuff is indoors)

golddustwomen · 18/04/2020 08:00

Woke up to the rain this morning with a horrible sinking feeling. We have been lucky with the beautiful weather, and I know I'm very lucky to have a garden.
