Something doesn't add up

So we had a 3 week lockdown, now we have another 3 week lockdown. So how come that adds up to a 7 week lockdown? Do they think we can't add up, do they think it sounds better to pretend we have had 2 x 3 weeks or what.

They have literally stolen a week from us. The history books will talk about 3 week lockdown extended for another 3 weeks so 6 week total, that forgotten week will be lost to all history. Makes you wonder what the government have done in this 1 week they are trying to hide. What are they covering up?

Schuyler · 17/04/2020 00:01

When it was announced initially, Boris was very clear “at least 3 weeks”.

Aridane · 17/04/2020 00:08

Lockdown started on one day, police enforcement powers a
Few days later.m That’s where the confusion lies, Imthink

MarinaMarinara · 17/04/2020 00:32

11 May is the date lockdown has been extended to in France.

And to echo PP - the 3 week impact review is in the legislation. It (unsurprisingly, given parliamentary process) took a few days from point at which the announcement was made for legislation to be passed and made law.

I really don’t think this is some mega conspiracy...

mantlepiece · 17/04/2020 00:35

I wouldn’t worry about it, it will probably be extended again and we can call it the ten week lockdown!

ZarkingBell · 17/04/2020 00:49

Get a fucking grip. Lockdown extended as required. Any fantasy end dates you've seen have been made up by the Daily Mail. Or some twat on social media who once talked to a chap who'd had a cup of tea with the local public health chief at the village charity dog show.

PanamaPattie · 17/04/2020 00:59

Lockdown was announced on the 23rd March but the regulations etc became live on the 26th March. The 3 week review was therefore on the 16th April and the lockdown was extended for another 3 weeks. I would expect another review on the 7th May.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/04/2020 07:43

Iitty bitty technicalities like that really really don't matter, and no-one knows how long it's going to go on for, when schools are going back etc etc. Just that it's being taken 'about' three weeks at a time.

It matters not one jot whether it follows a rigid weekly schedule and when the time comes for any major changes like schools, restaurants or shops to open, they'll need to give people notice, so they can prepare.

Because after what will be weeks or months of staying at home it's going to be an almighty shock to many to start up again and arrangements will need to be made like sorting childcare, cleaning and checking services in buildings that have been empty for ages, ordering supplies etc.

Parker231 · 17/04/2020 07:45

Irrelevant really as it will be reviewed again in three weeks against the five objectives the government have set and if they haven’t been achieved, the lockdown will continue.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/04/2020 07:46

YY to another review on the 7th of May. Then any major changes to be implemented from Monday 11th at the earliest. But it could also well be that the lockdown is extended for another 3 weeks or some time around very late May or early June. That's all anyone knows at the moment and anyone saying differently is simply making things up.

Nixen · 17/04/2020 08:01

I honestly can’t understand the people arguing over the semantics of the how many weeks etc. What’s the big deal? Were you planning on getting ‘I survived 6 weeks of lockdown and all I got was this lousy t shirt #CoronoCrew2020’ tops printed?

bulliedintonamechange · 17/04/2020 08:11

Get a grip/life or something will ya

RedskyAtnight · 17/04/2020 08:28

Schools closed on the 20th March and there were already social distancing and wfh guidelines in place then.

So today feels like 4 weeks since lockdown started.
It's 3.5 week's since Boris' announcement (23rd March).
And 3 weeks since the lockdown legislation (26th March).

Verily1 · 17/04/2020 08:30

Lockdown wasn’t legal until days after it was announced.

1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 11:01

Where did 11th of May come from? All we were told today was three more weeks, which from today is the 7th of May? I heard it on the news, can't remember which one.

OP posts:
1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 11:02

The extension was due previously but there was a small matter of our prime minding in ICU so it was delayed a little. HTH It didn't have anything to do with that. From the beginning the review was yesterday.

I guess the bank holiday and the weekend might explain it, I suppose if it was announced the day before a bank holiday weekend it might have too much of a reaction. Announcing some easing on a Monday means lots of people at work so no mad exodus.

OP posts:
1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 11:07

Lockdown wasn’t legal until days after it was announced. No it wasn't but he announced it on the 23rd and asked people to start lockdown, most people did as far as I can see.

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 17/04/2020 11:09

Well I suppose they could say once cases have dropped to x number we’ll initiate relaxations but they don’t know how much numbers will actually drop in that time so they can’t. I’m sure they have a rough idea in mind but so much of this debacle seems to be working on the presumption people are idiots... in fairness I can’t muster up much of a defence against that assumption.

They’re trying to manage the expectations of a scared and restless population with a lot of time on their hands to scrutinise things no one fully understands. It’s a balancing act.

1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 11:11

you’ll be amazed when this is all over by the things “they” tell us that just. don’t. seem. to. add. up. And well believe. Oh yes, I think the propaganda machine is in overdrive. The wriggling on what was said weeks ago, quite funny when they deny they said something and then the TV presenter shows the film.

I love the "We built a hospital in days just like the Chinese." Well they actually built one, we converted a building which was very impressive and I feel the efforts of those involved is actually diminished by it not being good enough so we have to pretend it was built. The claims about PPE aren't quite so amusing.

LonelyFromCorona I can’t actually tell if you’re joking or not!
It’s quite simple. The restrictive measures were announced on the Monday. The legislation was passed on the Thursday, so it legally had to be reviewed by then (which it was). ‘At least’ 3 further weeks have been announced. The government have not given the date of 11th May for the measures to be lifted. They could be lifted on the 7th, they probably won’t be.
It doesn’t matter whether that ends up being 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 10 weeks or whatever. They are not trying to fool anyone, or steal time from anyone, or rewrite history in any way.

1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 11:15

I wouldn’t worry about it, it will probably be extended again and we can call it the ten week lockdown! I'm sure it will be extended I just don't like being fed lies. Open and honest all the way. I realise some people prefer to be fed propaganda and they are welcome to it.

OP posts:
1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 11:16

They are not trying to fool anyone, or steal time from anyone, or rewrite history in any way. Really? I think they have done a fair bit of trying to rewrite history already.

OP posts:
HoffiCoffi13 · 17/04/2020 11:17

How are you being fed lies? Unless the government say ‘you have been locked down for 6 weeks’ when it has been 7 (and we can all count), then how are they lying?
The timeline of events is clear. It was announced on Monday. Legislation was passed on Thursday, to be reviewed after 3 weeks. It was reviewed after 3 weeks, as they said. They have not said it will end on the 11th May as far as I know, unless someone can find a source where that was said?

lubeybooby · 17/04/2020 11:18

other countries lockdowns have all been at least 2 months + and still going, we'll be no different and a day or 2 here and there is balls all tbh
