Made redundant today :(

Mummiepig · 15/04/2020 20:58

Just that really, was told I was furloughed, all good
Called today they can’t afford to pay the wages and wait for the money back, they don’t think the business can bounce back so that’s it
All staff redundant, company gone to administrators, expect £1400 redundancy
It’s shit, just wanted to let it out really :(

Girlymom2 · 16/04/2020 06:16

So sorry OP it’s something I’m personally dreading myself Flowers

userxx · 16/04/2020 06:34

@pocketem I don't think the government have the time to put into place a system where each individual employee makes a claim. It's needs to be done per business and be claimed through online services which is already in place.

I really think they are doing the best they can in these times.

pocketem · 16/04/2020 06:35

It doesn't need to be done through business. That was an ideological position from the government who were opposed to direct payments on principle.

The infrastructure is already in place for refunds from HMRC via the PAYE system, or via UC

userxx · 16/04/2020 06:40

The employer generally pays any tax refunds due to an employee then that's deducted from their PAYE bill, so that wouldn't work.

Deathraystare · 16/04/2020 06:47

Sorry to hear that Mummiepig. I have been made redundant about 3 times myself so can sympathise. Of course at the moment thins are a lot different and lots of people I would imagine would be in the same boat. No consolation I know. It is not looking good for the average worker is it?

There was me hoping 2020 would bring better things.

user1487194234 · 16/04/2020 06:48

The government made big promises which aren't coming through for a lot of business
I think they just wanted to stop people panicking and buy some time

KeepWashingThoseHands · 16/04/2020 06:59

Sorry to hear that OP. Mind me asking what industry you were in?

TryingToBeBold · 16/04/2020 07:10

I know it's no consolation but a few places are still hiring. Even short term like fruit picking or farms are in need of help to keep your mind busy

SociallyDistant · 16/04/2020 07:15

It's not already in place though is it? The portal won't be open until the end of this month at the earliest. I!n the meantime businesses, like ours, have had to close, so zero income, while continuing to pay 80% wages. We only have 3 employees and have sadly made one redundant. The other two are being paid 100% more than we as owner/directors are at the moment!

foxychox · 16/04/2020 07:23

Sorry to hear that OP, really hoping you can get back to work soon....

PicsInRed · 16/04/2020 07:26

The government could easily provide support through an extra payment through child benefit, UC, state pensions. The balance could be though the tax claim system. This would also ensure that some of the most fusncially vulnerable would receive assistance quickly.

This would be quicker and more efficient than the furlough system which requires your present or past employer to effectively "sponsor" you to receive govt assistance. We all know that not all employers are able to or decent enough to do this.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 16/04/2020 07:27

Banks should have given overdraft facilities until govt funding was released.

FunnyInjury · 16/04/2020 07:28

Socially the application portal for employers is due to open on Monday with payments due to begin by the end of April.

Spindelina · 16/04/2020 07:30

I have no idea whether your cash flow could support this, or whether you would want to do it, but...

You can ask them to keep you on, not pay you now, but owe you the (furloughed) wages and pay you when they get the money.

(According to Money Saving Expert yesterday)

RicStar · 16/04/2020 07:37

Op if the business is going into administration- then there is a chance that the administrators once in place will re-hire and furlough you - you will have to wait until the cash comes in from the government but it is possible.

AmelieTaylor · 16/04/2020 07:38

@Mummiepig. 🍫🍷. That's crap! It's a shame they don't think they can 'bounce back' - what industry are you in? they have said the money will be in place by the end of this month, so it's a bit shit of them to decide they can't bounce back at this stage.

I'm pleased you've got savings to see you through, but it's crap missing out on the furlough and losing a job/friends you enjoyed 😢

But as you say, try to be thankful for having your health 🌷

DonnaDarko · 16/04/2020 07:42

Sorry to hear your news :(

I've been made redundant twice before and it really sucks!

DP and I have both been furloughed and I worry for our future. We don't have savings to fall on as all our money over the last few years has gone to rent and childcare.

There are so many holes in the government's plans, I imagine we're going to see a lot more failed businesses and redundancies :(

userxx · 16/04/2020 07:46

@SociallyDistant The PAYE online service is already in place not the agent portal. That will added to the service.

Mummiepig · 16/04/2020 07:48

It was retail, small family owned business 15 employees

OP posts:
randomlettersabc · 16/04/2020 07:49

Both myself and husband are contractors. I was laid off last week, he's getting laid off in two weeks :( no severance, we do t qualify for help from government as we don't fall into self employed category... so in a fortnight we will have zero income. Very frightening. Not a clue about what to do :(

userxx · 16/04/2020 07:51

@SociallyDistant The portal will be up and running by Monday.

Some employees I deal with are prepared to wait for the furlough payments to come through before being paid. Would your staff be open to that or a reduced salary.

I hear ya, small business owner myself and won't be earning anything for the foreseeable. It's a Good job I love it!

userxx · 16/04/2020 07:54

@randomlettersabc Have you applied for UC ?

randomlettersabc · 16/04/2020 07:58

@userxx that's my first job today, to sort that out. We thought we might be able to manage for a bit in husband's income but now we don't have that either.

JudyCoolibar · 16/04/2020 08:06

Is there any chance the administrators might want to sell the company as a potentially going concern? If so they can put a furlough scheme in place themselves. There was a report the other day about a scheme of that type being approved for Carluccio's employees.

Els1e · 16/04/2020 08:07

So sorry to hear that. 💐💐 I was talking to a friend who owns a cafe and she is worried. She has furloughed their staff and put in the claim to the government but no money so far and no idea when it will be paid. She is concerned about cash flow and is hoping her bank will make reasonable adjustment. I hope things will work out for ok. 🤞
