May half term or September?

Of course, nobody can say for sure, but if you had to hedge your bets, based on what other countries are doing, do you think schools will be re-opening and the end of May or September?

August here in Scotland.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/04/2020 18:07

September.

Ricekrispie22 · 15/04/2020 18:08

@refraction Interesting, thanks for posting that link. Is it quite a reliable source?

It was the Welsh minister briefing today.

Who knows about England though?

AnotherEmma · 15/04/2020 18:11

I think 1st June (after May half term)

Jessikka · 15/04/2020 18:12

Isn't there about 100 of these exact threads?

Kinlocrhum · 15/04/2020 18:12

I think 1st June too.

SapphosRock · 15/04/2020 18:12

I'm saying May half term because that's what I'm hoping for.

GrumpySausage · 15/04/2020 18:28

I think 1st June after May half term finishes.

CallmeAngelina · 15/04/2020 18:30

Teacher here who is really hoping for after May half term - but I've seen a number of reports suggesting that there's a call for it being May 11th. That's too soon, I think.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 15/04/2020 18:30

I think September at earliest and I will be quite reluctant then. Won't even be considering it before then (although one of my children is on the vulnerable list so slightly different circumstances)

elephantskiss · 15/04/2020 18:33

Do people think (private, day) nurseries will open any sooner than the schools? I.e. since they don't have half terms, summer holidays, etc. (Obviously just speculation but wonder what others' opinions are).

Appuskidu · 15/04/2020 18:36

Mid June if they want schools to be staffed as the vulnerable groups would be back by then, but social distancing will be over when schools open to all and I think June may be too early for that to happen.

September is more sensible in my opinion and would have allowed cases to have fallen to a much more manageable level.

AnotherEmma · 15/04/2020 18:38

I think they will all reopen at the same time - schools, pre schools, private nurseries, childminders etc.
I just think it would make sense to keep it simple with a blanket rule. Plus many families have children of different ages so it would be a bit complicated to have some children back in childcare/school and others not.
It does annoy me that most of the conversation seems to be focused on schools, summer holidays etc - you are right to point out that private nurseries are open in the holidays!
DS is at a private nursery and I would be very surprised (and disappointed) if they didn't reopen until September.

Lumene · 15/04/2020 18:40

My guess is after half term in England.

Nurseries wouldn’t be allowed back any sooner than schools I would have thought?

Lookingforwardtomyeastereggs · 15/04/2020 18:49

I'm not sure, but I don't think it will necessarily be straight after a school holiday.

So for example if they decide its safest to reopen schools on June 29th, I don't think they'll say oh well there's no point opening until September.

Having said that, I really have no idea.

I don't think September is a magic month when it will suddenly become ok.

To all those screeching asking why people are so obsessed and calling us all lazy child killers who cba to look after our children, I don't think anyone's obsessed, I think a lot of people might be extremely worried about their jobs.

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/04/2020 18:53

Nurseries will have to coordinate with schools, for childcare purposes.

Bbc have been asked to create online learning content till the summer holidays.

Schools were really struggling for staff with the 2 weeks for social isolation rules if unwell.

They may open to more children, especially Sen schools as mine is, but I can't see it being business as usual till sept. If then. Possibly half the week or reduced hours or similar.

They're open to provide childcare over the summer holidays apparently too, as they are currently.

Afai can see, Denmark haven't really fully reopened.

EducatingArti · 15/04/2020 18:54

I think they may have years 6, 10 and 12 in after the May half term, with each class split into 3 groups so that they can continue to socially distance and so that they still have enough staff to cover.

AnotherEmma · 15/04/2020 18:54

I'm not worried about my job, just looking forward to sending DS to nursery again Grin No shame in wanting a break from our kids, and wanting them to go to nursery/school if they get a lot out of it (which many do).

DCOkeford · 15/04/2020 18:55

May Half term - we seem to have passed the peak now so there's no reason not to.

It was comforting to read that the Nightingale Hospital/Excel Centre has only treated 19 patients so far (over Easter) despite having around 3,500 beds.

I think we overreacted to the threat this virus posed, now that the true position is becoming clearer, I see no reason not to start getting back to normal.

ChrissieKeller61 · 15/04/2020 18:57

Well i don't care what the rest of you's are doing, mine won't be going back before September. Summer term is bloody pointless at the best of times

Fidgety31 · 15/04/2020 18:58

As soon as possible or year 6 so they can have the transition support to secondary

DCOkeford · 15/04/2020 18:58

Why not @ChrissieKeller61?

ChrissieKeller61 · 15/04/2020 19:01

@DOCKeford, just in no rush, i pulled them the week before the schools closed and touch wood so far we've been untouched as a family and i'd like to keep it that way.
